Amsterdam Pirates wins big against Czechs in European Champions Cup
Nederlands

SERRAVALLE (San Marino) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates registered a big 10-2 victory against Kotlářka Praha (Czech Republic) on Wednesday (June 1) in its second game of the European Champions Cup-tournament.

The game started started two hours and 40 minutes later due to rain and following maintenance work to the baseball-field in Serravalle. This is the most populated municipality in San Marino, which is the oldest sovereign state (and republic) in the world, being founded in the year 301.

Leading 4-1, Amsterdam rallied for six runs in the fourth inning. The squad collected 12 basehits, including three by Koen Nooij.

The Czechs hit only four basehits off of two pitchers.

With the win, Amsterdam got close to clinching a spot in the semi-final. That could have been the case when Buchbinder Legionäre Regensburg (Germany) would have won on Wednesday-evening against Pirati dei Rimini (Italy). With a victory, Regensburg also would have secured a spot in the top-2. However, that didn't happen, as Rimini won 5-3.

Trailing 1-0 in the first inning, Regensburg scored twice in its first at bat when Maik Ehmcke hit a 2-run homerun. Hereafter, four scoreless innings followed, but then Rimini struck with three unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning. Jairo Ramos Gizzi and Mirco Caradonna, the first two batters in this at bat for Rimini, both reached on an error, resulting in runners on first and third base. Ramos then scored the tying run on a single by Riccardo Bertagnon. After Caradonna and Bertagnon both advanced on a passed ball, they scored on a following single by Freddy Noguera, which gave Rimini a 4-2 lead. Regensburg got one run back in the bottom of the sixth when Nino Sacasa singled with one out and later scored on an error with two outs. Rimini added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Mayora.

With this win, a 3-way tie for first place is still possible. In order to realize that, Regensburg has to win on Thursday against Amsterdam, while Rimini has to beat Praha. The final score of the Amsterdam vs. Regensburg-game then would decide the final ranking. When Amsterdam outscores Regensburg, it will finish in first place. A 3-way tie for second place is then an eventual possibility when Praha would win against Rimini.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. Kotlářka Praha
As it did in its opening game on Tuesday, Amsterdam Pirates immediately opened the score in the first at bat against the Czechs. Nick Urbanus led off with a double off of starter Marek Minařík. He advanced on a grounder by Michael Duursma, then scored on a single by Gilmer Lampe. Next batter Remco Draijer walked, but a double play ended the at bat.

The Amsterdam-squad added three runs with two outs in the third inning. This time, Jesse Aussems led off with a single and moved on a following walk for Nick Urbanus. Moments later, Aussems was forced out on third base on a grounder by Michael Duursma and a flyout accounted for the second out. Hereafter, Remco Draijer connected for a runscoring single that brought in Urbanus. The next run was added when Duursma scored on a wild pitch and Draijer also went on to score when Danny Rombley reached on an error.

Pim Walsma started for Pirates. He got two baserunners in the top of the first inning. Jan Blažek led off with a single and Australian Mitchell Nilsson walked with one out. But they stranded, as a strikeout and groundout followed.

In the second, the Czechs left a runner on first base, then Walsma retired the side in the third. Trailing 4-0, Praha scored its first run in the top of the fourth inning. Daniel Vavruša led off with a walk and Jakub Sládek followed with a double. With one out, the bases got loaded when Matěj Šůcha walked. With two outs, an error enabled Vavruša to score the first Czech run, but hereafter, Walsma closed with a strikeout.

Amsterdam then decided the game with a 6-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Max Clarijs walked and Jesse Aussems singled. Nick Urbanus then also singled to bring in Clarijs. Next, Aussems scored when an error followed on a fielder's choice-grounder by Michael Duursma. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Gilmer Lampe was hit by a pitch. All three runners would score moments later. Urbanus scored on a grounder by Remco Draijer, then Danny Rombley delivered a 2-run single. That lifted the lead to 9-1 and led to a pitching change. Josef Cihlář took over, but he was greeted with a single by Koen Nooij. That brought Rombley to second base and he scored the sixth run in the at bat when Patrick Bok followed with another single.

In the top of the fifth, the Czechs left a runner on third base off of Pim Walsma, who was replaced by rookie Jimmy Osinga in the sixth inning. He gave up a lead-off single to Australian Ryan Battaglia, but Osinga then retired the next three batters.

Kotlářka then scored its second run in the seventh at bat. With one out, Martin Mužík walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a 2-out single by Daniel Vavruša.

That was to be the last run in the game.

After scoring six runs in the fourth inning, Amsterdam was held scoreless in the remainder of the game. In the sixth, Remco Draijer led off with a single and Koen Nooij (who was 3-for-4) singled with one out. But hereafter, the next two batters struckout.

Amsterdam was retired in order in the seventh by Josef Cihlář. He was relieved by Jan Obst in the eighth and he also retired three batters in a row.

Osinga allowed Praha to reach base two more times in the final two innings. He walked two batters in the eighth, but also struckout two. In the ninth, he retired the side to earn a save.
