Netherlands outscores Germany in Sénart

SÉNART-LIEUSAINT (France) - The Netherlands Kingdom Team won its first game of this years French International Baseball Tournament - Yoshida Challenge in which it faced Germany. On Thursday-afternoon (September 1), the Orange squad initially faced a 3-1 deficit after three innings, then took a 4-3 lead in the fourth and decided the game with a 6-run rally in the fifth en route to an eventual comfortable 12-4 victory. On Wednesday-afternoon, Germany won 8-6 against host France. However, this game was not officially part of the tournament, which went under way today. On Thursday-evening, France lost 9-4 against International Stars.

The Dutch Team collected 11 basehits, including three by Yurendell de Caster and homeruns by Randolph Oduber and Dudley Leonora. The latter also doubled and batted in four runs.

The Germans registered seven basehits, including homeruns by Max Boldt and Shawn Larry.

On Friday-afternoon, the team of Manager Steve Janssen meets the International Stars, then closes the preliminary round on Saturday-evening against host France.

On Thursday-evening, trailing 1-0, the International Stars scored four runs in the third inning on three hits, highlighted by a 2-run triple by Brandon Marshall. In the fourth, Maxwell MacNabb led off with a homerun, then another run was scored on a double play-grounder. With the Stars leading 7-1, France rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth on four hits, including RBI-singles by Norbert Jongerius and Félix Brown. The Stars then took some more distance by adding runs in the sixth and seventh inning.

International Stars is compiled from 'foreign players', who play in several international competition. Amongst the players is pitcher Eddie Aucoin, who has pitched in the Dutch big league for Pioniers, but now plays in Sweden, but also current Dutch big leaguers Jochem Koedijk, Julio Hernandez (both Kinheim) and Melvin Perdue (DSS).

Netherlands vs. Germany
Germany had a productive first at bat off of Dutch starter Diegomar Markwell. With one out, the lefthander gave up a single to Lukas Jahn, followed by a double by Max Boldt. Markwell followed with a strikeout, but then gave up a runscoring single to Shawn Larry, which also loaded the bases. The Germans then left three runners behind, as a grounder ended the at bat.

The Orange came alongside immediately in its first inning when Randolph Oduber homered with one out off Enorbel Marquez.

Germany re-took the lead in the third inning. Markwell then gave up a lead-off homerun to Max Boldt. With two outs, another homerun followed, this time hit by Shawn Larry that made it 3-1.

The Dutch Team was retired in order in the second and third inning, which included strikeouts for Dudley Leonora and Christopher Garia.

The game then turned the Orange was in the fourth when the squad scored three runs. Yurendell de Caster led off with a single, then Gianison Boekhoudt walked. With one out, both scored on a double by Dwayne Kemp to tie the score. Moments later, Kemp scored the go-ahead run on a single by Dashenko Ricardo, which led to a pitching change.

After the Dutch defense had turned a double play in the top of the fifth, the Dutch offense struck with a 6-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to decide the game. Randolph Oduber walked with one out, then Yurendell de Caster singled, which led to runners on the corners. Hereafter, Sean Cowan became the third German pitcher. He saw De Caster steal second base, then walked Gianison Boekhoudt to load the bases and was relieved. Jonathan Eisenhuth took over, but he also began with a walk, this time for Kalian Sams, resulting in a run. With two outs, Eisenhuth gave up a 2-run single to Dashenko Ricardo, then Dudley Leonora followed with a 3-run homerun that lifted the lead to 10-3.

Germany got one run back in the sixth off of new pitcher Berry van Driel. With one out, Shawn Larry reached on an error, then a walk followed. With two outs, Philip Schulz singled in Larry, but Van Driel then closed with a strikeout.

The Netherlands also scored again in its sixth at bat off of new pitcher Eric Brenk, which was one of several defensive changes in this inning for Germany. Brenk hit lead-off hitter Christopher Garia with a pitch. He moved on a grounder, then scored on a 2-out single by Gianison Boekhoudt.

The Orange squad scored its last run in the seventh inning. Dwayne Kemp then led off with a double and scored on an one-out double by Dudley Leonora.

In the top of eighth inning, Jim Ploeger took over the Orange-pitching. The lefthander initially was not selected for the French tournament, but was added to the roster, taking the spot of righthander Tom Stuifbergen. Today, Ploeger threw the final two innings and retired all six batters he faced.
