DSS improves roster despite losing players
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - DSS lost 13 players in the transfer-period, including four pitchers and its two leading hitters. However, despite that loss, the Haarlem-based also improved its record for the coming season. Ten players came to DSS, including three pitchers and a powerhitting infielder.

In its second year at the big league-level, DSS experienced a tough season. Last year, the team secured its spot in the highest division by finishing in sixth place. This year, the team ended up in eighth and last place in the Overall Standings with a 7-35 record.

In the following Play-Downs, DSS also ended in last place. As a result, they were supposed to have played a best-of-five Promotion/Relegation Series against the champion of the second highest league ('Overgangsklasse'). However, champion Storks and runner-up Orioles both were not interested in playing that Series of which the winner would play in next years big league. Third-placed RCH-Pinguïns had shown interest to play, but only the teams in first and second place were eligible to play in the Series. With that, the Series was cancelled and so, DSS secured its spot in the highest division.

In the final week of the regular season, Head Coach Lennart Stut stepped down. Nick Stuifbergen, who was the Coach of the club's Rookie League Team, was appointed interim-Head Coach. Also joining him were veteran coach Ivan Rodriguez Rodriguez, while Jerry Breek made his debut as 1B Coach. Tom Geestman (Bench Coach) and Rik Geestman (Pitching Coach) stayed on. The new coaching-staff also led the squad during the Play-Downs.

It was clear from the beginning that Stuifbergen and Rodriguez would only be with the team for the remainder of the season. Recently, Jerry Breek was named the new Head Coach of the team. Tom Stuifbergen, who comes over from Kinheim, will also act as Pitching Coach. Dirk van 't Klooster, the all-time hit-leader in Dutch baseball, will be the Hitting Coach.

The transfer-deadline ended on Tuesday, November 1, at 5 PM.

Thirteen players have left DSS, including five of its six best hitters, plus four pitchers.

Leaving the club are pitchers Mark van Deursen, Kevin Geestman, Rik Geestman and Max Ploegstra, catchers Ties van der Beeke and Ruben Prins, infielders Joffrey Heus, Mitchel Koot, Menno Lenting and Seb Visser and outfielders Lex Leijenaar, Ryan Miner and Melvin Perdue.

Only three of them will be playing in the Dutch big league again next year. Six players will play at a lower level, while four have retired.

Melvin Perdue and Menno Lenting, the two leading hitters of DSS this season, will both play for De Glaskoning Twins next year.

Perdue led the team with a .286 batting average (38-for-133) and also led in on-base percentage (.378) and with his 38 basehits, including four doubles and two triples. The American centerfielder scored 12 runs and also batted in 12. Perdue was mostly used as lead-off hitter and walked twenty times.

Lenting batted .277 (33-for-119) with three doubles and one triple. He scored 11 runs and batted in ten, while receiving 17 walks. Lenting led DSS with four sacrifice bunts.

Seb Visser returns to HCAW, where he played in 2012 after having played for Amsterdam Pirates before that. Since 2013, he played for DSS. This season, he played in 41 games and batted .221 (29-for-131) with four doubles and one triple. Visser scored eleven runs and batted in six.

Righthanded pitchers Kevin Geestman and Max Ploegstra, lefthanded pitcher Rik Geestman, infielders Joffrey Heus and Mitchel Koot and outfielder Lex Leijenaar all will play in a lower division next year.

Joffrey Heus will play for Haarlem-based Onze Gezellen in the second highest league. This season, the second baseman batted .177 (23-for-130) in 39 games with one double. He scored 15 runs and batted in six, but led the team with 29 walks.

Lex Leijenaar has transfered to his former club RCH-Pinguïns, where he will play in its second team. Due to an injury, Leijenaar played in only 13 games this season and batted .079 (3-for-38) with one double. He scored once and also batted in one run.

Reliever Max Ploegstra will remain with the club, but will play in its second team next year. The righthander pitched in 27 games this season as reliever and was 1-0 with one save and a 4.91 ERA. In 33 innings, Ploegstra struckout 19 batters, but also walked 26 and gave up 45 basehits.

Kevin Geestman and Mitchel Koot will both play for the second team of Amsterdam-based OVVO next season.

Mitchel Koot, who played at several positions, including third base and catcher, also missed part of the season due to an injury. He batted .188 (13-for-69), scored seven runs and batted in one.

Righthanded pitcher Mark van Deursen, lefthanded pitcher Rik Geestman, catcher Ruben Prins and outfielder Ryan Miner have all retired.

Van Deursen and Prins stopped due to study/work-reasons, while Geestman and Miner will become coaches of the Rabbits Junior-squad of Baseball Academy Kennemerland.

Mark van Deursen pitched in relief in 17 games and was 0-1 with a 9.36 ERA this season. In 25 innings, he struckout seven batters, walked 14 and gave up 42 basehits and 30 runs.

Rik Geestman, who also was the team's Pitching Coach, also pitched in relief this season. He was the starter for DSS on Opening Day, but hereafter, he only pitched in relief, appearing in 15 more games. Geestman was 0-1, earned no saves and closed the season with an 11.07 ERA. In 20 1/3 inning, Geestman struckout eight batters, but walked 28 and gave up 35 hits and 28 runs.

Ryan Miner was the fourth best hitter this season of DSS. He batted .240 (30-for-125) with three doubles and one triple in 38 games. Miner scored 15 runs, batted in eight and walked 26 times.

Ruben Prins played in 28 games and batted .133 (10-for-75). He scored four runs and batted in three.

Ties van der Beeke, who played the majority of the season in the Rookie League Team of DSS, but also made his big league-debut, transfered to RCH-Pinguïns, which plays in the second highest league. In five games, Van der Beeke hit .500 (5-for-10) with one double. He scored one run and batted in five. In his first big league at bat on April 17, Van der Beeke hit a 2-run double.

Ten players have come to DSS in the transfer-period to strenghten the team.

Amongst the newcomers are three pitchers, all righthanders. Reggie Bomberg and Tom Stuifbergen came from neighbour Kinheim, while Sander Helmendach comes from HCAW. Also coming from HCAW is catcher Levin Gabriëls.

Four infielders came to Haarlem, two of whom played in the big league this season, being Thomas Bos (Kinheim) and Omar Williams (Pickles UVV). The other two infielders are Djewi Appelman (Sparks Haarlem) and Odion Gouverneur (no club), who played in the highest division before.

Also coming are two outfielders, who both played in the big league. They are Jordan Illis (Pickles UVV) and Kevin Nieveld (HCAW).

Tom Stuifbergen was to be one of the starting pitching aces this season for Kinheim. However, due to injuries, his availablibity was limited to only seven games, including one relief appearance. During these games, the righthander did very well, as he struckout 35 batters in 31 1/3 inning and walked only seven batters, while giving up 17 basehits and only three runs. Stuifbergen was 2-0 and closed the regular season with an 0.86 ERA.

Reggie Bomberg pitched in 21 games for Kinheim, all in relief or as closer. He was 0-3 with a 4.39 ERA, but earned five saves. In 26 2/3 inning, Bomberg struckout 16 batters and gave up 27 basehits.

Sander Helmendach has been used this season both as a starter and a reliever by HCAW. He threw in 13 games, six of which he started. Helmendach closed the season with an 1-6 record and a 6.27 ERA. He struckout 22 batters, but also walked 31 in 37 1/3 inning.

Catcher Levine Gabriëls returns to DSS after having played one season for HCAW. This season, he played in 29 games and batted .209 (14-for-67) with one double. He scored nine runs and batted in seven.

Omar Williams was the leading hitter this season for Pickes UVV with a .325 batting average (40-for-123) with six doubles and three homeruns. Williams, who mostly played at third base, also led the team in basehits and homeruns. He scored 16 runs and also batted in 16, which was second-best in the team.

Thomas Bos was the back-up second baseman this season for Kinheim. The son of former big leaguer and Netherlands Team-player Frank Bos played in 23 games, five of whom he started. He batted .125 (4-for-32), scored ten runs and batted in three.

Bos even got some coaching 'experience' this season. When Head Coach Michael Crouwel was suspended for two games, only one coach was left over, Dave Zijlstra (3B), as Stanley Engelhardt (1B) also was suspended at the time. Instead of naming Zijlstra interim-Head Coach during Crouwel's suspension, Bos was named in this position. With that, in case the 'new' Head Coach should be ejected, the team would still have a regular coach left over.

Infielders Odion Gouverneur and Djewi Appelman both played in the big league a year ago.

Gouverneur then played for Mampaey The Hawks, which relegated. In the past, he also played for ADO Lakers. Appelman last year played for Vaessen Pioniers. This season, Appelman played for Sparks Haarlem in the second highest league, while Gouverneur was without a club.

Outfielder Jordan Illis played in 28 games this season for Pickles UVV and batted .161 (9-for-56), scored six runs and had three runs batted in. He hit one double.

Kevin Nieveld was the fifth best hitter this season of HCAW with a .254 batting average (33-for-130) with nine doubles. The outfielder scored 19 runs and also batted in 19, while walking 21 times. He was one of three players in the team that played in all 42 regular season-games.
