Amsterdam Pirates wins Urbanus Tournament thanks to HCAW-win
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates will be crowned as winner of the 34rd edition of the annual In Memoriam Charles Urbanus, Sr. Tournament in Bussum on Sunday (April 3). Nothing can change that on the final day of the event.

On Saturday (April 2), Kinheim opened with a 3-1 victory against Vaessen Pioniers, but then lost 5-2 to L&D Amsterdam Pirates. In both games, Kevin Moesquit homered for Kinheim.

Amsterdam had opened the tournament on Friday-evening with a win against host HCAW and so was the lone unbeaten team when the third game today started.

That game was between HCAW and Pioniers. A win by Pioniers would mean that the final game on Sunday of the Hoofddorp-squad against Amsterdam would be decisive for first place. However, HCAW came from behind and won 7-4.

With that, HCAW decided the outcome for first place. Even when Pirates should loss to Pioniers on Sunday, it will end up in a tie with either HCAW or Kinheim, who also face each other on Sunday. But as Pirates has won the head-to-head game against both of these teams, it will end in first place.

It marks the second time that Amsterdam wins the tournament. It first won the event two years ago.

The regular season opens on Thursday, April 14.

Game 2 - Kinheim vs. Vaessen Pioniers
Kinheim opened the score in the first inning off of starter Lars Huijer. The righthander initially began by striking out the first two batters he faced. But hereafter, Kevin Moesquit homered in his first at bat during this exhibition season. Moesquit arrived from Curaçao a few days earlier and today played in his first game.

Kinheim doubled its lead in the third inning. The bases got loaded when Jasper Keijzer, Jochem Koedijk and Sander Paap all singled. Kevin Moesquit then again connected well and hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Keijzer. The bases got loaded again when Bryan Engelhardt also singled, but the inning then ended when Dudley Leonora grounded into a double play.

Pioniers cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth inning off of Glenn Wassink, who pitched well. After having retired the side in order in the first inning, he gave up a lead-off single to Quintin De Cuba in the second, but hereafter, he held Pioniers hitless in the five innings he pitched.

Wassink was supported with a double play in the second at bat, but then gave up a run in the fourth. The righthander walked Mervin Gario and Quintin De Cuba, who then advanced when Kevin Dirksen flied out. A grounder by Shurman Marlin enabled Gario to score, but De Cuba stranded on third base.

Kinheim immediately added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth. Niels van Weert led off with a triple, then scored on a wild pitch.

Kinheim failed to take more distance in the fifth when it got the bases loaded with two outs off of new pitcher Koen Blom. With one out, the rookie walked Kevin Moesquit, then saw the bases getting loaded with two outs when Dudley Leonora singled and Niels van Weert walked. The inning then ended when rookie Olivier Severino van der Wijst grounded into a force play. In the sixth inning, Taylor Clemensia pitched for Pioniers and the lefthander had a fine outing, striking out the side.

Pioniers got into scoring position again in its final two innings off of reliever Scott Ronnenbergh. With two outs in the sixth, he walked Kevin Dirksen, who then advanced on a wild pitch, but stranded on second base. In the seventh, he gave up a 2-out double to Stephen Henson, but also was left behind and so, Ronnenbergh earned a save.

Game 3 - L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. Kinheim
After opening the day with a victory, Kinheim ended up short in its next game against L&D Amsterdam Pirates, which also opened the event on Friday-evening with a win.

Amsterdam left a runner in scoring position in the first inning, but then opened the score in the next at bat off of starter Tom Stuifbergen. The righthander gave up a lead-off double to Kenny Berkenbosch, who then moved on a grounder by Rashid Gerard and scored on a following single by Jesse Aussems. Hereafter, Amsterdam got the bases loaded when Max Clarijs walked and (with two outs) Michael Duursma's force play-grounder ended in an error. But Pirates left three runners behind when a grounder ended the at bat.

Amsterdam added its next run in the third inning. With one out, Remco Draijer singled, stole second base and scored on a 2-out double by Rashid Gerard.

Pirates took more distance with a 3-run rally in the fifth off of reliever Nick Veltkamp. The lefthander gave up a lead-off single to Gilmer Lampe, then walked Danny Rombley. Remco Draijer then singled, which was followed by an outfield-error, resulting in a run and runners on second and third base. A sacrifice fly by Kenny Berkenbosch and an error gave Amsterdam two more runs and lifted the lead to 5-0.

Dennis Burgersdijk started for Amsterdam and threw five solid innings, giving up only two basehits and striking out four batters. He was relieved by Pim Walsma in the sixth, who then gave up Kinheim's two runs. Walsma, who pitched for Kinheim in the past few years, walked lead-off hitter Jasper Keijzer, but retired the next two batters. But then Kevin Moesquit hit his second homerun of the day to make it a 5-2 score.

With two outs in the seventh, Dexter de Weert walked and rookie Chiel Berkhout singled. The two advanced on a wild pitch, but Walsma then closed the game with a strikeout.

Game 4 - Vaessen Pioniers vs. HCAW
Two lefthanders started this game, Chris Pfau for Pioniers, Jim Ploeger for HCAW. The latter was immediately supported with three runs in the first at bat. Pfau saw the first four HCAW-batters reach base and that led to the runs. Lead-off hitter Boyd Tuhumury reached on an error, then Roelie Henrique singled and the bases got loaded when Rossini Frolijk walked. They all scored when Vince Rooi followed with a baseclearing double against the team where he played in the past few seasons.

Pioniers got one run back in its first at bat. Ploeger hit lead-off hitter Zerzinho Croes with a pitch. He then advanced on an infield-hit by Mervin Gario, who was then forced out on a grounder by Austin Weymouth. Croes moved to third base and with two outs, he scored on a wild pitch.

Pioniers then appeared to turn the game its way by scoring three runs in the second inning. Shurman Marlin led off with a walk and scored on a following triple by Brian Raap. With one out, the latter scored the tying run when Shavently Profar reached on an error. With two outs and Profar on third base, Mervin Gario walked, then a steal-situation led to the go-ahead run.

Pioniers then stranded two runners in the third and HCAW left a runner on second base in the fourth inning.

In the fifth, it was HCAW that struck again and this time took the lead for good. They did it off of former teammate Maickel Rietel, who transfered from HCAW to Pioniers in the off-season. HCAW rallied for three runs, but only one was unearned. Gianni Frolijk reached second base on an error, then scored the tying run when Boyd Tuhumury followed with a double. The latter moved on a sacrifice bunt by Roelie Henrique, then scored on a fielder's choice-grounder by Rossini Frolijk. The latter was replaced by pinch-runner Jelle Blaauw, who then reached third base on a double by Vince Rooi and scored on a sac-fly by Julian Goins to make it 6-4.

HCAW added another run in the sixth off of submariner Jonah Van Bemmelen. With two outs, the American-Dutch righthander saw Tuhumury reach on an error and later score on a single by Henrique.

Ian Delemarre took over the HCAW-pitching in the fourth. He retired the side in the fourth (two strikeouts) and fifth inning. With two outs in the sixth, Delemarre walked Brennan Nijhof, who has been his teammate when both played for UVV last season. But he was forced out on a grounder by Profar that ended the game. And with that, Delemarre earned his third win of the exhibition season.
