Bears completes sweep to win Korean title

CHANGWON, Gyeongsangnam-do (South Korea) - Doosan Bears completed a 4-game sweep against NC Dinos on Wednesday-evening (November 2) by winning 8-1 to repeat as champion of the Korean Baseball Organization. Its was the seventh sweep in the history of the Korean Series, which has been played 34 times now since 1982.

While the opener was only a 1-0 win, the Bears dominated the Series from the beginning. The team has several young players, mixed with experience. During the regular season, the Bears also showed a lot of power and strong pitching. Seven of its players batted .300 or better. Five players hit 20 or more homeruns. The team led the league in several offensive categories, including homeruns (183) and runs scored (935). The Bears set a single-season record in the professional Korean League by winning 93 games.

Winning Manager Tae-hyung Kim now has won the title in his first two years leading the Bears. He and losing Manager Kyung-moon Kim have been teammates when both played for the Bears in the nineties. The latter also has been Manager of the Bears some years ago.

On Saturday, Doosan Bears opened the Championship Final with an 1-0 victory in eleven innings. The lone run was scored on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eventh inning.

Doosan Bears also won the second game, defeating NC Dinos 5-1 on Sunday-afternoon. The Bears broke an 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning by scoring four runs with two outs.

The Bears then took a 3-0 lead by winning 6-0 in Game 3 on Tuesday-evening. The Bears led only 2-0, but then rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to seal the victory.

Game 4

At Masan Stadium, Bears-starter Hee-kwan Yoo got the bases loaded in the first inning, but avoided giving up runs. The Bears then opened the score with one out in the top of the second inning when catcher Eui-ji Yang homered off of starter Zach Stewart.

In the sixth inning, Stewart, who had held the Bears scoreless after giving up the homerun, was relieved by Jong-hyun Won. The Bears then scored three runs. With two runners on base, Eui-ji Yang delivered a runscoring double. Hereafter, Kyoung-min Hur followed with a 2-run double to increase the lead to 4-0.

In the sixth inning, the Dinos got more productive off of Hee-kwan Yoo, who became the fourth Bears-starter to pitch into the sixth inning during this Series. After giving up two singles, Yoo was relieved by Hyun-seung Lee, who was supported with some fine defensive plays, which kept the Dinos scoreless.

In the ninth inning, the Bears rallied for four runs to make it an 8-0 score. Jae-won Oh hit a 3-run homerun and Nick Evans added a runscoring single.

The Dinos scored their lone run in the bottom of the ninth on a homerun by Eric Thames.

The Bears outhit the Dinos 14-5. Eui-ji Yang was 3-for-4 today, including a double and homerun, scored twice and batted in two runs. The catcher was named Most Valuable Player of the Series.
