Amsterdam Pirates closes Urbanus Tournament with loss
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates, which secured itself of first place on Saturday, closed the 34rd edition of the annual In Memoriam Charles Urbanus, Sr. Tournament in Bussum on Sunday (April 3) with a 3-1 loss against Vaessen Pioniers.

It was the first exhibition-loss for the Amsterdam-squad, who had won seven of its previous eight games and saw another one ending in a tie. For Amsterdam, veteran pitcher Rob Cordemans still has to make his first appearance, but he will probably do so next weekend when the exhibition season ends. Amsterdam then meets reigning champion Curaçao Neptunus in two games. By the way, the playing sites for those two games have been changed. The teams will first meet in Amsterdam on Saturday and then play in Rotterdam on Sunday. This was originally the other way around.

Host HCAW closed the tournament with a 2-1 win against Kinheim to finish in second place.

Former professional pitcher Jonatan Isenia made his debut for Pioniers, pitching one inning in the game against Pirates.

Kinheim also introduced two new players, Venezuelan righthander Luis Figuera Roman and Aruban outfielder Julio Hernandez, who are both getting a try-out in the Haarlem-squad. In the past few seasons, the two played for Marlboro Red Machine, with whom they won the Aruban championship last year in the Aruban Dobbel A League. In the deciding championship-game against Atro Concrete Indians, Figuera was the winning pitcher and Hernandez batted 2-for-4. Figuera pitched professionally for three seasons in the organisation of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2008-2010, he played for its Rookie League-team, which was based in Venezuela.
Two weeks ago, on March 17, Figuera was the starting pitcher for Red Machine in the exhibition game against Curaçao Neptunus, which then stayed a week on Curaçao. In that game, Hernandez collected two basehits.

Kevin Moesquit (Kinheim) was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, as he was a year ago. The award for Best Pitcher went to Amsterdam Pirates for the fourth consecutive time. After Kevin Heijstek (2013, 2014) and Rob Cordemans (2015), the award now went to Dennis Burgersdijk.

Game 5 - L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. Vaessen Pioniers
Pioniers decided the game in the first inning. Amsterdam-starter Robin Schel walked lead-off hitter Stephen Henson. Hereafter, the lefthander was replaced by Kyle Ward also a lefthander. Normally, Schel is a short reliever, who pitches only a few batters per game. Ward saw Henson steal second base, then struckout two batters. But next batter Kevin Dirksen then connected well and drove the ball over the rightfield-fence for a 2-run homerun.

The replacement of Schel was a technical decision. ,,I just want to give relievers extra pitching-opportunities, as they must be able to pitch on consecutive days when the season begins'', Amsterdam Head Coach Charles Urbanus explained.

In the next four innings, Pioniers was held scoreless by the Pirates-pitching. Ward retired the side in the second ining (two strikeouts). In the third, he walked Henson with one out, but he was then caught stealing after a pick-off. In the fourth, Ward gave up an one-out single to Dirksen, but closed with two more strikeouts, giving him six in the four innings he pitched.

In the fifth inning, Tom de Blok took over . He gave up a lead-off single to Mark Smit, who stole second base, but the next three batters were eliminated.

Nick Keur started for Pioniers and saw Pirates reach base several times, but gave up no runs in the three innings he was assigned to pitch in this game. In the first at bat, he gave up an one-out single to Michael Duursma, who advanced on a passed ball, but then stranded.

In the second inning, Remco Draijer led off for Amsterdam with a walk, but was then caught stealing in a double play when next batter Kenny Berkenbosch struckout. Jesse Aussems then walked and Rashid Gerard reached on an error, but they were left behind, as Keur closed with another strikeout.

In the fourth inning, Jonatan Isenia took over for Keur to make his debut in a Pionier-uniform. With one out, the former pro walked Remco Draijer, who advanced on a wild pitch. Isenia then also walked Kenny Berkenbosch. But hereafter, a force play-grounder and strikeout ended the at bat.

In the fifth inning, Pirates again left two runners off of Maickel Rietel. Lead-off hitter Patrick Bok reached on an error, then Gilmer Lampe singled with two outs, but a flyout closed the at bat.

Pioniers added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Mervin Gario walked, then stole second base and scored on a 2-out single by Quintin De Cuba.

Amsterdam scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth off of Sedley Karel. Remco Draijer led off with a walk, advanced to third base on an one-out single by Jesse Aussems, then scored on a wild pitch with two outs.

Game 6 - HCAW vs. Kinheim
HCAW closed the tournament with a 2-1 victory against Kinheim to finish in second place.

For Kinheim, Kevin Moesquit doubled with two outs in the first inning, but was left behind. HCAW then opened the scored in its first at bat off of starter David Bergman. The veteran righthander walked lead-off hitter Marciano Philippi, who then advanced on a grounder and a single by Rossini Frolijk. Moments later, he scored on a double by Vince Rooi. Frolijk also tried to score, but he was eliminated at the plate. HCAW left two runners behind, but had taken the lead and Kinheim would faced a deficit for the remainder of the game.

For the Haarlem-squad, Niels van Weert and Olivier Severino van der Wijst singled with one out in the second inning, but the HCAW-defense then turned a double play.

HCAW-starter Sander Helmendach then encountered no problems in the third and fourth inning. In the meantime, David Bergman held HCAW hitless in his next three innings, allowing only one batter to reach base.

In the top of the fifth inning, Helmendach got two quick outs. He then had reached his pitch-count and was replaced by Tim Niekerk, who closed the inning by striking out pinch-hitter Julio Hernandez. The Aruban outfielder made his debut in the Kinheim-squad.

HCAW added its second run in the bottom of the fifth off of new pitcher Reggie Bomberg. Levine Gabriëls led off with a double, advanced on a flyout and scored on a pinch-hit single by Gianni Frolijk.

Kinheim then got one run back in the top of the sixth inning off of Niekerk. Jasper Keijzer led off with a single and stole second base. With one out, he scored on a pinch-hit double by Dexter de Weert, but hereafter, Kevin Moesquit lined into a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, HCAW appeared to add another run off of Venezuelan Luis Figuera Roman, who also made his debut. Figuera and Hernandez both arrived in Haarlem last Friday and are getting a try-out. Figuera began with a strikeout, but then walked Julian Goins. After the runner had advanced on a wild pitch, Figuera walked pinch-hitter Raoell Kortstam, but followed with a strikeout. A grounder then ended the inning.

With the minimal 2-1 lead, Giovanni Tensen threw the seventh inning for HCAW and retired the side to end the game.
