Netherlands also shuts out France in Sénart
Nederlands

LIEUSAINT-SÉNART (France) - The Netherlands Kingdom Team closed the preliminary round of the French International Baseball Tournament - Yoshida Challenge on Saturday-evening (September 3) with a 10-0 shutout-win in seven innings against host France.

With the the win, the Orange squad recorded its third win and second shutout of the tournament. On Sunday, the team will play in the Final of the event. In that game, the Netherlands Team meets Germany again, which came from behind on Saturday-afternoon to win 8-7 against the International Stars to become the second finalist. The International Stars will play for third and force play against France.

Two years ago, the Dutch Team first participated in the Yoshida Challenge, which was then held for the first time. Back then, the Orange suffered a historic and surprising 12-8 loss to France. That was the first Dutch loss against France in 77 years!

But today, the Netherlands held the French team scoreless and never led its lead get in jeopardy to stay unbeaten.

The Kingdom Team collected only eight basehits, including two by Gianison Boekhoudt, who also scored two runs. The game also marked the comeback in an Oranje-uniform of veteran pitcher Rob Cordemans.

Netherlands vs. France
Rob Cordemans took the mound again for the Netherlands on Saturday-evening. It was his first Orange-appearance since he started on November 12 of last year against Italy during the Premier12 in Taiwan. The 41-year old righthander then threw the first five innings and was the winning pitcher in a 16-1 victory for the Netherlands. This season, he was sidelined with an injury, which caused him to miss the Baseball Week Haarlem in July. Two weeks ago, he made his comeback on the mound for L&D Amsterdam Pirates in the Dutch big league. A week ago, he made his second start.

Tonight, he retired the first three batters he faced in the top of the first inning. The righthander then gave up a lead-off double to Ernesto Martinez in the second at bat, but struckout the next three batters. In the third and fourth inning, Cordemans again retired the side. He began the third at bat with two strikeouts, meaning he struckout five consecutive batters. In the fourth, Cordemans closed with two strikeouts.

The Netherlands opened the score with one run in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Owen Ozanich. With one out, Randolph Oduber singled, then scored when Gianison Boekhoudt tripled with two outs. For Boekhoudt to hit a triple must be a rare experience for him, as he didn't hit a triple the entire season playing for Curaçao Neptunus. Boekhoudt hit his last triple in the Dutch big league during the 2014 season, which was his first in the highest division.

Ozanich struckout the side in the second inning, but then gave up another Dutch run in the third inning. With one out, Christopher Garia walked. Moments later, he stole second and advanced when a throwing error followed. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Randolph Oduber to make it 2-0.

In the fifth inning, Orlando Yntema took over the pitching for Cordemans and also retired the side. That included a strikeout for Omar Williams, who plays in the Dutch big league for Pickles UVV, as is Norbert Jongerius.

The Netherlands doubled its lead to 4-0 by scoring two (unearned) runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Sander Paap walked and Christopher Garia singled, which led to runners on the corners. A pick-off attempt at third base by the catcher then ended in a throwing error. That not only enabled Paap to score, but Garia also scored all the way from first base.

After Yntema also had retired the side in the top of the sixth inning, the Orange squad again doubled its lead in the home half of the bat off of new pitcher Thomas Langloys. This time by scoring four runs to make it an 8-0 score. Again, these runs were unearned due to an error. With one out, Gianison Boekhoudt doubled and Kalian Sams walked. After Gilmer Lampe had been inserted as pinch-runner for Sams, a passed ball led to runners on second and third base. With two outs, a grounder to third base by Dudley Leonora appeared to become the third out. However, a throwing error followed, enabling Boekhoudt and Lampe to score. Hereafter, Nick Urbanus contributed with a runscoring double and Sander Paap added an RBI-single to lift the lead to 8-0.

In the top of the seventh, Orlando Yntema walked lead-off hitter Felix Brown and was relieved by Jim Ploeger. The lefthander struckout the first batter he faced, then gave up a single to Ernesto Martinez, which was followed by another strikeout. The two runners were able to advance on a passed ball, but France was held scoreless, as a grounder closed the at bat. This was the only time in this game that a French runner had reached third base.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Netherlands reached the 10-run difference to end the game via the mercy-rule. Lorian Andro became the new pitcher for France, but he gave up an one-out single to Yurendell de Caster, then walked Gianison Boekhoudt. Gilmer Lampe followed with an RBI-double and that led to a new pitching-change. Antoine Villard took over, but he saw Kevin Moesquit hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Boekhoudt, lifted the lead to 10-0 and ended the game.
