Netherlands baseball-women open World Championship with win

GIJANG-GUN, BUSAN (South Korea) - The Netherlands Women Baseball Team opened the World Women Baseball Championship in South Korea on Saturday-morning (September 3) with a 9-2 win against India.

For the Orange squad, this its the fourth time it participates in a World Championship. The team earlier participated in 2010 (Venezuela), 2012 (Canada) and 2014 (Japan).

Today's win was only the second for the Dutch Team in 23 World Cup-games. The Orange recorded their first win against Cuba in 2012.

In its first game ever against India, the Dutch Team was outhit 6-4, but won 9-2. Two Indian pitchers threw nine walks combined. India last participated in 2008.

Netherlands vs. India
The Netherlands, which is led by Manager Eddie Dix, initially faced an 1-0 deficit after the first inning. With two outs, Mona Kusumakar reached on an error for India and advanced on a wild pitch from Dutch starter Maud Werkman. A walk for Vandana Dhaka followed and hereafter, a single by Amanjot Kaur Bains loaded the bases. Werkman then walked next batter Geeta Bhuyan, which resulted in the first run. But India then left three runners behind when a grounder ended the at bat.

Indian starter Priya Chittari Chandu walked lead-off hitter Isabelle Markies in the first inning, but then retired the next three batters.

But from the second inning on, the Dutch Team scored nine runs, three in each of the next three innings.

In the second at bat, with one out, Sofie van de Wiel walked and scored the tying run on a single by Sascha Egas. The latter went on to score on a sacrifice bunt by Kyra van Genderen, then a fielder's choice-grounder by Isabelle Markies made it 3-1.

In the top of the third, India scored its second run, thanks to a single by Geeta Bhuyan, making it a 3-2 score.

In the bottom of the third, the Dutch Team again scored three runs. Sascha Egas brought in a run with a basesloaded single. Force play-grounders by Annemiek Koehorst and Kyra van Genderen then lifted the lead to 6-2.

In the fourth, three more Orange-runs were scored to reach a 7-run difference. Esther Maliepaard led off with a walk, then scored on a 2-out double by Bianca Mooi. Sofie van de Wiel then walked and Sascha Egas followed with a 2-run double that made it 9-2.

The Dutch defense made some fine plays, including three double plays.
