Nederlands

GOODYEAR / MESA / SURPRISE, Arizona / CLEARWATER / DUNEDIN / FORT MYERS / LAKELAND, Florida (USA) - On Friday (March 4), Chris Garia was assigned to the Major League Spring Training-team of the Texas Rangers. The 23-year old, Curaçao-born outfielder joined the team as an additional player for its home game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In November last year, Garia made his debut in the Netherlands Kingdom Team, with whom he participated in the Premier12 in Taiwan.

With the addition of Garia, there are now 13 professional players from the Netherlands with Major League-teams during Spring Training, either on the 40-man roster, as a non-roster player or as an additional player.

On Friday, six of them got into action, including Andrelton Simmons, who played in his first game for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Simmons was traded to the Angels in November by the Atlanta Braves.

At Sloan Park in Mesa, Andrelton Simmons played in his first game for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Last November, the short stop was traded to the Californian club by the Atlanta Braves.

Today, the Angels visited the Chicago Cubs and were shutout 3-0. The Cubs scored twice in the fourth inning and once in the sixth, but were outhit 6-5. The game was watched by 15,446 spectators, which set a record for games played in the Cactus League, one of the two leagues during Spring Training. The teams who play in Arizona play in the Cactus League, those playing in the Florida form the Grapefruit League.

Simmons batted in fifth place in the batting order and was the designated hitter for the Angels, hitting 0-for-3, but reached base once. He didn't play defensively, due to arm soreness.

In the first inning, Yunel Escobar and Kole Calhoun began with singles for the Angels. A flyout and strikeout followed, then Simmons grounded out, ending the inning.

Simmons then flied out in the fourth inning. In the seventh, Simmons led off and reached on an error. He advanced on a single by Roberto Baldoquin and reached third base when pinch-hitter Jeff Bandy grounded into a double play. But he then was left behind when a strikeout ended the at bat.

In the top of the ninth inning, Simmons was replaced by a pinch-hitter.

In the fifth inning, Baltimore got a run back, thanks to Schoop. Ryan Flaherty led off with a single, then Paul Janish walked. With one out, Schoop delivered a runscoring single, but a double play-grounder then ended the at bat. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Schoop was replaced.

In this game, Ozzie Albies came into the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as the new short stop for the Braves. He went 1-for-2 with a walk and batted in one run.

In his first at bat in the seventh inning, Albies hit a force play-grounder. In the eighth, after the Braves had scored three runs, Albies singled to load the bases. In the top of the ninth, the Braves scored four runs with two outs. With the bases loaded, the first run was scored when Matt Kennelly walked. Hereafter, Albies also walked to bring in the tying run. An error on a following grounder by Mallex Smith then led to two runs and gave the Braves an 11-9 lead.

The lead was shortlived. In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, J.P. Crawford and Brock Stassi singled, then Cedric Hunter followed with a walk-off, 3-run homerun.

Ozhaino Albies is playing professionally only since 2014. After having played the entire 2014 season in Rookie League, he promoted to Single-A last season.
