AMSTERDAM (Neth.) -
L&D Amsterdam Pirates won 4-2 on Monday-evening (July 4) against HCAW in the first of two make-up games between the two teams.
The second game will be played on Tuesday-evening, also in Amsterdam.
The game was the first of a 4-game home stand in six days for Amsterdam Pirates, who also will play at home in the first two games on the upcoming series against De Glaskoning Twins.
Amsterdam will host the team on Thursday and Saturday, then travel to Oosterhout on Sunday in what will be the final game before the season is interrupted for just over two weeks for an international break.
In that period, the Netherlands National Baseball Team will participate in the bi-annual Haarlem Baseball Week, which opens on July 15 and is renamed into Baseball Week Haarlem from this year on.
Later this week, the Netherlands Junior Team travels to Spain for the European Junior Championship, which opens next Sunday (July 10) and will be played in Gijón and Oviedo.
Because of this event, some teams will miss a few players during their upcoming 3-game series.
Tonight's game was originally scheduled to be played as second game of a 3-game series last Saturday, but then was cancelled due to rain and field conditions.
The original opener of the series rained out on Thursday-evening, then was re-scheduled for the next day, but then had to be scrubbed again due to the weather condition.
This game now will be made up on Tuesday-evening.
In tonight's well-visited game (some 400 spectators attended), HCAW, which outhit Amsterdam 7-5, opened the score on an error in the top of the second inning.
Amsterdam came alongside in its second at bat, then took the lead in the third inning on a 2-run double by Kenny Berkenbosch, who went on to score an insurance run in the sixth inning.
