Japan vs. Netherlands
Against the strong team of Japan, the Netherlands squad had no chance to do something back today.
The team reached base only three times, recorded only one basehit and got into scoring position only once.
After being retired in order in the first inning, Marije Filius led off the second inning with a single into centerfield off of starting pitcher Miyu Shimizu.
However, she was later eliminated in an inning-ending double play.
The Orange team was retired in order again in the third and fourth inning.
Trailing 12-0, the Dutch team got into scoring position for the first time in the top of the fifth inning.
With two out, pinch-hitter Anouk Vergunst reached on an error, then next batter Sofie van de Wiel walked.
However, a strikeout then ended the inning and the game.
The Netherlands avoided giving up a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Starting pitcher Susan Erades began with a strikeout, then a walk and a single led to runners on first and third base.
Yukiko Ishida then hit a line drive to 3B Famke Gildemacher, who caught the ball and made an unassisted double play.
Japan then struck with a 6-run rally in the second inning to decide the game.
There were only two basehits in this inning, while Susan Erades added three walks.
There were also two costly throwing errors on sacrifice bunts, which eventually led to five unearned runs.
When the outs would have been made, it would have result in only one Japanese run in this at bat.
In the third inning, Japan added five runs of four basehits.
This time, all runs were earned, as the one error that was made in this inning was harmless.
With runners on first and second base, Chihiro Funakoshi delivered a runscoring single, which led to a pitching change.
Berber Jansen took over and got the bases loaded with a walk.
A sacrifice fly then accounted for the second run in this inning, then Yaya Kojima followed with a 2-run single.
Hearefter, another single and a walk re-loaded the bases.
Next, a fly into the outfield was missed, but would have been a sacrifice fly anyway, resulting in the fifth run and an 11-0 lead for Japan.
In the fourth inning, Japan added one more run on a basesloaded walk, but the Asian squad also left three runners behind.
