Netherlands wins Yoshida Challenge with small win agaist Germany
Nederlands
LIEUSAINT-SÉNART (France) -
The Netherlands Kingdom Team has won the French International Baseball Tournament - Yoshida Challenge, but did it with a small 5-3 victory in the Final against Gemany on Sunday (September 4).
En route the to the final, the Netherlands Team dominated in the three games played in the preliminary round.
The team scored 34 runs and gave up only four.
Those four runs were scored by Germany in the opener of the evenement, which was won by the Orange squad, 12-4.
Remarkable enough, the Netherlands had a tough final two years ago when it first participated in the event.
Back then, the Dutch team trailed after seven innings against France and went on to win only 3-2.
Today, the Netherlands trailed 2-1 after five innings, but then scored three runs in the sixth to turn the game its way.
The Dutch Team collected only seven basehits, including two important ones by Dashenko Ricardo, as he batted in three runs with a homerun and a single.
In the upcoming days, the final roster for the Netherlands Kingdom Team will be announced for the upcoming European Championship, which opens next Friday in Hoofddorp and Nieuw-Vennep (Netherlands).
Earlier today, France finished in third place by winning 12-9 in ten innings against International Stars to record its first win of the tournament.
Bastien Dagneau hit a 2-run homerun for France in the first inning, but the Stars came alongside.
In the second at bat, France scored four runs on three hits, including a 2-run double by Norbert Jongerius.
Trailing 6-2, the Stars scored five runs from the third through fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead.
In the seventh, the lead again changed twice.
In the top of the seventh, France scored twice to make it 8-7 in its favor, but then the Stars scored two runs again in its seventh.
In the eighth, trailing 9-8, France made it a 9-9 score on a single by Félix Brown.
After a scoreless ninth, France then decided the game by scoring three runs in the tenth on singles by Frederic Hanvi (one run) and Bastien Dagneau (two runs).
In the bottom of the tenth, the Stars left three runners behind.
The Netherlands and France will one final exhibition game, facing each oother coming Wednesday-evening at the site of Pickles UVV in Vleuten.
The game begins at 7 PM.
On the same evening, Germany will play a game against Croatia at the site of RCH-Pinguïns in Heemstede, starting at 5 PM.
Sweden will play a game against Dutch big league-team DSS at its site in Haarlem, starting at 7:30 PM.
Great Britain also will play on Wednesday-evening and meets Onze Gezellen (which plays in the second highest Dutch league) in Haarlem, also starting at 7:30 PM.

Netherlands vs. Germany
On a cloudy and somewhat rainy afternoon in Lieusaint, the Netherlands faced an early 2-0 deficit in the first inning.
Dutch-starter Mike Bolsenbroek initially got two quick outs, as he began with a strikeout, which was followed by a flyout.
Hereafter, the righthander walked Max Boldt.
Moments later, Bolsenbroek gave up a homerun to Chris Howard, who is his teammate and catcher of Regensburg Legionäre in the German Bundesliga.
A grounder by Simon Gühring ended the at bat, but the Orange squad faced a 2-0 deficit.
In the following innings, Bolsenbroek encountered no more problems, but the Dutch offense was silenced by German starter Jonathan Eisenhuth.
In the top of the second inning, Gemany again got into scoring position when Eric Brenk singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt.
A walk followed, but both runners were left behind.
After retiring the side in the third, Bolsenbroek walked Brenk with two outs in the fourth, but this time, he was caught stealing.
Bolsenbroek retired the side (two strikeout) again in the fifth.
Eisenhuth held the Orange-offense hitless in the first four innings.
In the first inning, he walked lead-off hitter Christopher Garia.
He moved on a grounder, but stranded on second base.
In the second at bat, Dwayne Kemp reached second base on an error with one out, but also was left behind.
Eisenhuth retired the side in the third, then walked lead-off hitter Yurendell de Caster in the fourth, but retired the next three batters.
And so, when the bottom of the fifth inning began, the Dutch team faced a 2-0 deficit.
This was cut in half when Dashenko Ricardo led off with a homerun.
A flyout by Dudley Leonora and line out by Nick Urbanus followed.
Hereafter, Christopher Garia reached on an error, but was caught stealing moments later.
In the top of the sixth, Kevin Kelly took over the Dutch pitching.
He struckout the first batter, but then saw the Germans get in scoring position again.
Singles by Max Boldt and Chris Howard (bunt) led to runners on first and second base.
Boldt then moved to third base on a flyout by Simon Gühring, but the inning ended when Kelly struckout Jendrick Speer.
In the bottom of the sixth, Germany also went to the bullpen and inserted Enorbel Márquez-Ramírez as new pitcher.
The Cuban-born lefthander played for Solingen Alligators in the highest German league for six seasons, before transfering to Rimini Pirates in Italy.
There, he played five years, before returning to Solingen for the 2015 season.
This year, the 41-year old Márquez is a playing coach for Berlin Flamingos, which plays in the second highest league in Germany.

In the bottom of the sixth, the veteran ran into problems immediately.
He gave up a lead-off double to Randolph Oduber, who then scored the tying run on a following single by Yurendell de Caster.
Márquez then struckout Gianison Boekhoudt, but then Kalian Sams doubled to put runners on second and third base.
The two runners were unable to advance when Dwayne Kemp grounded out, but both then did score when Dashenko Ricardo followed with a 2-run single.
With that, Ricardo played an import role in this game.
Initially, after completion of the European Champions Cup-tournament early June in Italy, Ricardo suddenly announced his retirement from both his clubteam Curaçao Neptunus as well as the National Team.
Ricardo went home to Curaçao, but rejoined both Neptunus and the Orange squad a month later, just before the start of the Baseball Week Haarlem in July.
Now leading 4-2, Bayron Cornelisse became the new Dutch pitcher in the seventh inning.
He walked lead-off hitter Eric Brenk, who was caught stealing and Cornelisse followed with two strikeouts.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lukas Steinlein took over the German pitching.
With two outs, he gave up a double to Randolph Oduber, but closed by striking out Yurendell de Caster.
In the top of the eighth inning, Germany narrowed the deficit to 4-3 by scoring a run off of new pitcher Tom de Blok.
The righthander gave up a lead-off single to Marcel Jimenez, who got into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Lukas Jahn.
Jimenez then moved on a grounder by Max Boldt and scored on a single by Chris Howard, who was 3-for-3 and batted in all three Geman runs.
With that, the score was now 4-3, but De Blok ended the at bat by striking out Gühring.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Netherlands added an insurance run.
Pinch-hitter Christian Diaz led off with a double, then Kalian Sams walked.
After the two moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Dwayne Kemp, a force play was set up by walking Dashenko Ricardo intentionally.
And of course to avoid the powerhitter.
A force play indeed followed, as Ricardo was eliminated on second base on a grounder by Dudley Leonora, but that also enabled Diaz to score and make it 5-3.
In the top of the ninth, Loek van Mil closed the game for the Orange squad and retired the side to end the game.
