Amsterdam Pirates shuts out HCAW in exhibition opener
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - Four teams from the Dutch Major League had their first exhibition game of the season scheduled for today (Saturday, March 5). Two more games were scheduled for Sunday. As predicted, the temperatures remained low in the past few days and because of that, two games were already cancelled on Friday, one to be played on Saturday, the other on Sunday. However, two games were played today and with that, the exhibition season officially opened.

Today was one of the earliest exhibition openers in years. Mostly, due to cold weather conditions, all games are cancelled in the first weekend of the exhibition season. The earliest opening in the last eleven years was in 2008 when Neptunus and Sparta-Feyenoord played a 9-inning game on March 2, which ended in a 10-10 tie.

One of the wettest exhibition seasons was 2006. Due to cold, snow, rain or field conditions, 25 games were cancelled ten years ago.

Today's average temperature was less than six degrees Celsius (42,8 Fahrenheit). Two years ago, the exhibition season opened on Saturday, March 8, which then was the warmest March 8 in Dutch history since measuring started in 1901. On that day, it was 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) and seven games were played.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates and HCAW were to meet each other on both Saturday and Sunday. First at the site of HCAW in Bussum on Saturday, then on Sunday in Amsterdam. On Friday, it was confirmed that Sunday's game had been scrubbed. Both teams hoped to play on Saturday and despite low temperatures, there even was some ice in front of the Amsterdam dug-out, they indeed played. It was only 5,6 degrees Celsius (42 Fahrenheit) when the game started, but Amsterdam Pirates shutout HCAW 4-0.

Twins, which will make its comeback this season in the Dutch big league, also had two games scheduled this weekend. It was to play against its Rookie League-team on Saturday and Sunday at its home site in Oosterhout. Like HCAW, green light was given on Saturday-morning for the game to be played in the afternoon. Twins shutout its Rookie-squad, 9-0. Sunday's game has been cancelled.
Recap of the Twins-game

DSS was scheduled to travel to Heiloo on Saturday, where it would play against Double Stars Heiloo, which plays in the second highest league ('Overgangsklasse'). This game also was cancelled earlier due to the cold weather conditions.

The regular season opens on Thursday, April 14.

HCAW vs. L&D Amsterdam Pirates
Before today's game, there was some sunshine, which created some pleasant moments. However, it got cloudier during the game and with that, the temperatures dropped and with that, it got colder. During the game, the wind chill factor dropped to four degrees Celsius (39 Fahrenheit). But, the teams managed to play eight innings and there first game is in the books.

Amsterdam Pirates batted with nine players, while HCAW had twelve in its batting order. Also, all pitchers threw only one inning. As Pirates had six pitchers available, HCAW batted only six times. HCAW used eight pitchers and with that, Amsterdam had eight at bats.

Amsterdam appeared to open the score right away in the first inning when it got the bases loaded off of starter Kaj Timmermans. With one out, Michael Duursma and newcomer Gilmer Lampe singled. After Duursma moved to third base on a flyout on foul territory by Danny Rombley, another newcomer in the Amsterdam line-up, Lampe stole second base. The bases got loaded when Remco Draijer walked, but the three runners stranded when next batter Kenny Berkenbosch grounded out.

Amsterdam Pirates then did open the score in the top of the third inning off of Marco Schel. With one out, Lampe reached on a bunt-single, but was forced out on a following grounder by Rombley. The latter then scored when Draijer doubled. Berkenbosch added a single, but two runners were then left behind.

In the top of the fourth inning, Amsterdam scored three unearned runs with two outs off of Ian Delemarre to lift the lead to 4-0. With one out, Linoy Croes singled and Nick Urbanus walked. They advanced on a grounder by Michael Duursma. A following grounder by Gilmer Lampe then ended in a throwing error and a run. The bases got loaded when Danny Rombley walked and Remco Draijer followed with a 2-run single to give him three runs batted in today.

In the final four innings, Amsterdam reached base only two more times off of four relievers, both times on an error. Sander Helmendach pitched the last inning for HCAW and struckout three batters.

HCAW reached third base twice, but was unable to score. Roy Berrevoets made his comeback as Head Coach today. He already led the squad in 2007 and 2008, but was named as new Head Coach for the upcoming season only a week ago. His coaching staff has yet to be named, but today, he was assisted by Roeland Henrique, Sr.. Today, the team played without veteran Vince Rooi, who was sick. Rooi is one of the newcomers in the team. Last season, he played for Vaessen Pioniers.

In the bottom of the first inning, off of Amsterdam-starter Kevin Heijstek, former Pirate Roelie Henrique led off with a double. He moved on an one-out grounder by Julian Goins, also a newcomer in the Bussum-team, but then was left behind.

Henrique was the first of five lead-off hitters to reach base for HCAW, which batted six times. In the second, lead-off hitter Kevin Nieveld reached on an error off of Kyle Ward, who then followed with three strikeouts.

In the third inning, Dennis Burgersdijk retired the side, but in the fourth, HCAW reached base twice off of Tom de Blok. He walked lead-off hitter Dalvin Kortstam. With one out, the rookie moved when Rossini Frolijk reached on an error, but then Julian Goins grounded into a double play.

In the fifth, off of Robin Schel, Kevin Weijgertse (who also played for Pioniers last season) reached on an error and Kevin Nieveld singled. Nieveld's hit was the second and last for HCAW in this game. Hereafter, Raoell Kortstam grounded into a double play. Weijgertse advanced to third base, but stranded.

In the sixth, Marciano Philippi led off with a walk off of Daan Hendrix, but he was later forced out.
