Zarraga and Sulbaran play in first Spring Training game

MESA / PEORIA / PHOENIX / SCOTTSDALE, Arizona / JUPITER / KISSIMMEE / SARASOTA / VIERA, Florida (USA) - On Saturday (March 5), Shawn Zarraga and Juan Carlos Sulbaran played in their first game of this years Spring Training.

Zarraga played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, with whom the catcher also saw action in eight games during last years Spring Training. In the home game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Zarraga had a good outing. He went 2-for-3 as designated hitter and scored twice.

Sulbaran made his debut in Major League Spring Training, pitching one inning for the St. Louis Cardinals. While getting the bases loaded, he didn't gave up a run.

On Saturday, six more Dutch professionals played in Spring Training-games.

At Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, the St. Louis Cardinals visited the Miami Marlins and won 3-2.

The Marlins took a 2-0 lead in the third inning off of starting pitcher Marco Gonzales. With the bases loaded and two outs, he was relieved by Korean Seung-Hwan Oh, who got a flyout that ended the inning.

Oh retired the side in the fourth inning, then J.C. Sulbaran took over the pitching in the fifth at bat to make his debut in a Major League Spring Training-game. The first batter he faced was famous Japanese slugger Ichiro Suzuki, but he flied out. The righthander then gave up a single to J.T. Riddle. After another flyout, Riddle moved on a wild pitch. Hereafter, Sulbaran got the bases loaded when Isaac Galloway singled and Austin Nola was hit by a pitch. But Sulbaran gave up no runs, as next batter Francisco Arcia grounded out. Sulbaran was relieved when the bottom of the sixth inning began.

The Cardinals got a run back in the seventh inning, then scored twice in the eighth on a 2-out double by Anthony Garcia to turn the game their way.

Last year, Sulbaran pitched for the Netherlands Kingdom Game during the Premier12 in Taiwan. He also was a member of the Orange squad that captured the World Championship-title in Panama in 2011. Sulbaran also pitched for the Dutch during the 2009 World Baseball Classic, 2009 World Championship, as well as during the 2012 European Championship, which then was held in the Netherlands.



In Champion Stadium at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex @ Walt Disney World Resort in Kissimmee, Ozzie Albies was 1-for-1 for the Atlanta Braves in a 9-6 home-loss vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In the top of the sixth, Pittsburgh trailed 5-1, but then rallied for five runs and added three more in the eighth at bat.

Albies entered the game as new second baseman in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Ryan Lavarnway led off for the Braves with a homerun to make it a 9-6 score. With two outs, Albies got his lone at bat in this game and singled off of pitcher Chad Kuhl. Next batter Dansby Swanson also singled, but the two runners were left behind.



Playing at home at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, a split-squad of the Baltimore Orioles lost 10-6 to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Another split-squad of the Orioles lost 13-2 at the Minnesota Twins.

In the game at Sarasota, Jonathan Schoop was the starting second baseman for the O's and batted 1-for-3, while also scoring a run.

Schoop singled in his first at bat in the third inning, but stranded in first base.

Leading 3-1, the Rays added six runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Orioles then answered with a 4-run rally in the bottom half of the at bat. With J.J. Hardy on first base and one out, Schoop hit a force play-grounder, which ended in an error and runners on first and third base. Hardy then scored on a following double by Joey Rickard and Schoop went on to score when Nolan Reimold reached on an error. Baltimore added two more runs to narrow the deficit to 9-5, but was unable to turn the game around.

At the beautiful Camelback Ranch-Glendale in Phoenix, Aruba-born Shawn Zarraga was the starting designated hitter for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the home game against Arizona Diamondbacks. Zarraga batted seventh and went 2-for-3, while also scoring two runs. The Dodgers won 7-2.

In the bottom of the second inning, with the Dodgers leading 1-0, Zarraga singled with one out off of starting pitcher Shelby Miller. He then moved to third base on a single by Elian Herrera and scored when next batter Corey Brown also singled. Zarraga grounded out in the fourth inning.

The D-backs came alongside in the third inning, but the Dodgers rallied for four runs in the sixth at bat to re-take the lead. In this inning, Alex Hassan delivered an RBI-double to make it 3-2, then Rob Segedin followed with a 2-run homerun. Zarraga then added a single and went on to score the fourth run in this inning on a double by Charlie Culberson.

Zarraga was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.

Like Sulbaran, Zarraga was a member of the successful Netherlands National Team that captured the World Championship-title in Panama in 2011. In 2014, Zarraga also played for the Orange squad that won the European Championship-title in the Czech Republic.

In November last year, Zarraga participated with the Netherlands Kingdom Team in the Premier12 in Taiwan.



At Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Spencer Kieboom went 1-for-2 in an 8-4 win for the Washington Nationals at home vs. Detroit Tigers. The 'Nats' broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning.

Kieboom entered the game as new catcher in the top of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the at bat, Scott Sizemore homered to give Washington a 5-4 lead.

Kieboom, who also played in three Spring Training-games for the Nationals last year, got his first at bat in the seventh inning. With Brendan Ryan at first base and one out, Kieboom singled. The bases got loaded when Brian Goodwin walked. Hereafter, Jason Martinson also walked to bring in a run, but three runners were then left behind.

In the bottom of the eighth, Matt Skole hit a 2-run homerun, but hereafter, the next three batters were retired, including a strikeout for Kieboom.



At Peoria Stadium in Peoria, Andrelton Simmons played in his first game defensively as the short stop for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The day before, he had been the designated hitter in his Angels-debut. Today, the Angels won 9-7 at the Seattle Mariners. Trailing 5-2 after five innings, the Angels scored once in the sixth, then rallied for four runs in the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. The Mariners came alongside in the bottom of the seventh, but the Angels scored again in the eighth and ninth at bat.

Simmons led of the game in the first inning with a flyout. He then struckout in the third and fifth inning and was then replaced in the bottom of the fifth inning.



At Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale, Jurickson Profar batted in a run for the Texas Rangers in a 7-5 win at the San Francisco Giants, who played with a split-squad.

Profar started as short stop for the Rangers and grounded out in his first at bat in the first inning. In the bottom of the second, Mac Williamson led off for the Giants with a homerun, but the Rangers then rallied for four runs in the third. Pedro Ciriaco and Lewis Brinson led off with singles off of Albert Suarez. Hereafter, Profar also singled to bring in the tying run. With one out, Brinson and Profar both scored on a double by Mitch Moreland, who then scored himself on a single by Nomar Mazara.

In the fourth inning, with two outs and a runner on first base, Profar walked, then the bases got loaded after Justin Ruggiano also walked. The third consecutive walk vor Mitch Moreland then resulted in a run, but a force out then ended the at bat. Profar was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the top of the sixth.



At Sloan Park in Mesa, the Cincinnati Reds win 4-2 at the Chicago Cubs.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Reds led 2-1, then added a run when pinch-hitter Phillip Ervin led off with a homerun. Hereafter, Calten Daal entered the game as pinch-hitter for Jose Peraza, but struckout.

Daal stayed in the game as short stop and got his second at bat in the eighth inning. With two outs, he doubled, but stranded on second base.
