Another loss for Italy; two Czech wins in Italian Baseball Week

TIRRENIA (Italy) -
Italy has suffered another loss during the seventh edition of the Italian Baseball Week, which has developed into an event with a series of surprising scores.
On Monday (September 5), the Czech Republic nipped Italy 2-1 in its first game of the day.
Later in the day, the Czechs shutout Spain 3-0 to record its third victory in two days.
The Czech Republic also shutout Spain on Sunday-evening and then won big with an 11-0 score.
Italy opened the event on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Spain, then played a 4-4 tie against the Spanish squad on Sunday-afternoon.
During the Italian Baseball Week, the three teams prepare for the upcoming European Championship, which opens coming Friday in Hoofddorp and Nieuw-Vennep (Netherlands).
The tournament closes on Tuesday-evening in Florence with the match-up between Italy and the Czech Republic.
The teams then will travel on either Wednesday or Thursday to the Netherlands for the European Championship.

Czech Republic vs. Italy
After a scoreless first inning, Italy left a runner on second base, then faced a deficit moments later.
The Czechs were retired in order in the first inning (two strikeouts) by starting pitcher Carlos Richetti.
But in the second inning, with one out, Tomáš Junec homered to gives the Czechs an early lead.
In the top of the third, Italy was retired in order by Czech starter Martin Schneider, who was then supported with another run in the bottom of the third.
Premek Chroust led off with a walk and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Jakub Hajtmar.
Another walk followed, this time for Petr Sila.
Moments later, Chroust advanced to third base on a flyout, then scored on a single by Jakub Malik to make it 2-0 in favor of the Czechs.
Italy was retired in order again in the fourth inning and new pitcher Daniel Mraz did the same in the fifth.
In these two at bats, the Czechs left a runner on first and on third base, respectively.
In the sixth, pinch-hitter Sebastiano Poma led off for Italy with a walk, but hereafter, Paolino Ambrosino lined into a double play.
The Czechs threatened to score again in the bottom of the sixth, but left two runners behind.
Italy finally was able to score in the top of the seventh inning, but failed to score more runs, leaving three runners behind.
Nick Nosti led off with a single, then moved on an one-out single by Alex Liddi.
The Czech defense was the unable to make an out on a fielder's choice-grounder by Alex Sambucci, which loaded the bases.
Reliever Mraz then struckout veteran powerhitter (and pinch-hitter) Jairo Ramos Gizzi, but followed with a walk for Juan Carlos Infante that made it a 2-1 score.
But with the bases still loaded, the game ended when pinch-hitter Federico Celli fouled out, leaving the Italians empty-handed again.

Czech Republic vs. Spain
Spanish starter Jorge Balboa retired the first ten batters he faced, but then gave up three runs in the fourth inning.
And that would be decisive.
With one out in the fourth, Martin Schneider singled and advanced on a wild pitch, then Matej Hejma walked.
The two scored when Jakub Malik followed with a double.
With two outs, Martin Muzik singled and when a throwing error followed, Malik scored the third run in the at bat.
In the next two innings, only one more Czech batter would reach base.
Czech starter Boris Bokaj gave up only two basehits in the four innings he pitched.
He retired the side in three of these innings, but saw Spain get into scoring position in the top of the second inning.
Fernando Martinez led off with a single, then moved on a 2-out single by Leo Rodriguez, but the two were left behind.
Tomás Duffek took over the Czech pitching in the fifth.
With one out, he walked Rodriguez, who then advanced on a grounder, but stranded on second base.
In the sixth, he was supported with a double play, then retired the side in the seventh to end the game.
