Netherlands baseball-women end up short against Canada
Nederlands

GIJANG-GUN, BUSAN (South Korea) - The Netherlands Women Baseball Team lost 'only' 7-1 to Canada on Monday (September 5), Day 3 of the World Women Baseball Championship in South Korea.

The Orange squad had opened the event on Saturday with a 9-2 win against India, then lost 12-0 to reigning world champion Japan on Sunday.

The Netherlands women-baseball team has certainly improved since first participating in a World Championship in 2010. The team still ends up short, especially against the powerhouse-teams, but the losses are not that big anymore. For instance, the Orange squad also faced Canada on the three previous World Championships. Canada then won 12-1, 19-2 and 11-0. Today, the final score was only 7-1 and the score was tied at 1-1 halfway the fourth inning.

Two years ago, Canada ended up in fourth place when the Championship was held in Japan.

With today's loss, the Netherlands finished in third place in Pool B. With that, the team now will continue in the Consolation Round, which begins on Wednesday. The two best teams of each pool continue in the Super Round. On Wednesday, the Orange squad meets Cuba, then faces the USA on Thursday. The Netherlands plays against Hong Kong on Friday and closes on Saturday against Pakistan, which participates for the first time in a World Championship. The event ends on Sunday with the bronze medal game and the final.

A major upset happened in Pool C of the event, as the USA was eliminated for the Super Round. In the Opening Round (or preliminary round), the American squad won 9-1 vs. Hong Kong, then nipped Chinese Taipei 2-1 in its next game. Today, Team USA lost 10-2 against Australia, meaning these two teams ended in a tie. As the head-to-head result was in favor of Australia, the USA was eliminated. It marks the first time that the USA has not qualified for the Championship Round. In the previous six World Championships, the USA ended in the top-3 each time! It won the title in 2004 and 2006. On the last two Championships, it won silver, losing the final both times against Japan.

Canada opened the score in the bottom of the first inning off of starting pitcher Loes Asmus. Another strikeout followed, however, the bases then got loaded via two walks The Dutch Team avoided more runs, as a flyout ended the at bat, leaving three Canadian runners behind.

In the second inning, Canada left a runner on second base and in the third, two Canadian runners stranded.

In the top of the fourth, the Orange women came alongside. Isabelle Markies led off with a single and was moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt by Esther Maliepaard. She then advanced to third base on an infield-hit by Famke Gildemacher. With two outs, Gildemacher took off to steal second base and while she was eliminated in a rundown, Markies was able to score the tying run.

Canada immediately answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to re-take the lead. Veronika Boyd led off with a double, then scored on a following triple by Nicole Luchanski, who had a productive afternoon. Moments later, Luchanski scored on a sacrifice fly by Daphnée Gélinas. When next batter Kelsey Lalor walked, Ciska Welboren was brought in as new Dutch pitcher. She gave up a single to Pascale Jalbert, then a sacrifice fly to Jenna Flannigan, which made it 4-1 in favor of Canada.

In the top of the fifth, Bianca Mooi led off for the Netherlands with a single, but later was forced out on second base.

Canada then again scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Boyd and Luchanski hit back-to-back doubles, resulting in a run. Gélinas then walked and Lalor followed with a 2-run triple that made it 7-1.

Nicole Luchanski was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple. She walked once, scored three runs and batted in two, making her responsible for five of the Canadian runs.

After Canada had left runners on second and third base off of new pitcher Thari Diefenbach in the sixth, the Orange Team got close to its second run in the top of the seventh.
