UVV nips Pioniers to finish in seventh place
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) -
Pickles UVV took an early lead and hold onto it to end a 7-game losing streak on Saturday (August 6), winning 3-2 against Vaessen Pioniers.
With the win, UVV will finish in seventh place in the Overall Standings.
Today, DSS, which is in eighth place, also won.
On Sunday, a DSS-win and UVV-loss will put the two teams in a tie for seventh place.
The two series played in the first and second half of the season then will result in another tie, as UVV won the first series 3-0, then DSS won three games in the second half.
The next tie-breaker is the Team Quality Balance, which is in favor of UVV.
So, whatever happens on Sunday, UVV will finish in seventh place and with that will start the Play-Downs with two points, while DSS opens with none.
Today, UVV opened the score off of American lefthander Chris Pfau in the third inning on an error.
Two runs were then added in the fourth at bat, including one on another error.
Pioniers got one run back in the top of the fifth off of starter Thijs Steenwijk.
A single by Mervin Gario then resulted in a run, an out at the plate and a pitching change.
With that, Steenwijk, who made his first start of the season after 17 relief-appearances, ended up 2/3 inning short to become the winning pitcher.
A starting pitcher can only be credited with a win when he pitches five complete innings in a 9-inning game.
Pioniers scored its next run in the seventh, but was left empty-handed, despite outhitting UVV 12-6.
