BUSSUM (Neth.) -
On a sunny afternoon and under a blue sky, HCAW celebrated a milestone on Saturday (May 7), as it played its 1,750th game at the big league-level since making its debut in the highest division in 1967.
It was the first summerday of the year with a temperature of 26,2 Celsius (79,2 Fahrenheit) and more than 1,000 spectators showed up for the game.
Before the start of the game, the club's Chairman Huib Schrijvers addressed the spectators, then introduced some 50 former players onto the field.
The current players of HCAW, but also youth-players and its softball-team,as well as opponent L&D Amsterdam Pirates lined up around the infield for the pre-game ceremony.
During that ceremony, Ron Jaarsma, who had been the team (and club) sponsor for thirty years with Mr. Cocker, was honored.
When HCAW promoted to the big league in 1966, the decisive game was pitched by its legendary pitcher and club-icon Rob Hoffmann.
He also pitched the very-first game in the big league for HCAW in 1967 and went on to pitch for the team through 1972.
Hoffmann passed away in 2010.
His wife, Aggy Hoffmann, threw the ceremonial first pitch before the game.
After she had done that, a special moment followed, as Chairman Schrijvers announced that the field had been renamed into Rob Hoffmann Valley.
All ingredients were there today in Bussum.
Great weather, a lot of spectators, history, a fine baseball-game, having a talk, walking around, looking around, talking with and meeting former players, having a drink, eating a hamburger.
This is how baseball (and softball) is meant to be experienced!
In the game, HCAW trailed 1-0, but led 3-1 after four innings.
Amsterdam Pirates came alongside in the fifth, trailed 4-3 after the bottom of the fifth, but then turned the game its way and won 8-4.
HCAW outhit Pirates 11-8.
Linoy Croes (who celebrated his birthday) and Danny Rombley homered for Amsterdam.

HCAW vs. L&D Amsterdam Pirates
After having left a runner in the second inning, Amsterdam Pirates opened the score in the top of the third inning.
Rashid Gerard led off with a single off of starter Kaj Timmermans and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Linoy Croes.
A throwing error by the catcher enabled Gerard to reach third base.
Next batter Nick Urbanus walked and both runners were awarded the next base when a balk was called, resulting in a run.
Michael Duursma was then hit by a pitch, but Amsterdam stranded two runners.
In the bottom of the fourth, HCAW struck with three runs off of lefthander Kyle Ward.
Kevin Weijgertse led off with a double, then Julian Goins singled.
A following single by Kevin Nieveld tied up the score.
Next, Goins and Nieveld advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Raoell Kortstam and then both scored on a single by his brother Dalvin Kortstam.
A double play ended the inning, but HCAW had taken a 3-1 lead.
That was shortlived, as Amsterdam came alongside in the next at bat.
Linoy Croes, who celebrated his birthday today, led off with a homerun, then Nick Urbanus doubled and Michael Duursma singled.
With one out, Remco Draijer doubled to make it a 3-3 score.
With runners on second and third base, a force play was set up by walking Danny Rombley intentionally.
That worked, as next batter Kenny Berkenbosch connected on the first pitch and grounded into a double play.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, HCAW re-took the lead.
With two outs, Vince Rooi and Kevin Weijgertse (who both played for Pirates in the past) delivered back-to-back doubles to make it 4-3.
Julian Goins added a single, but the inning ended when Kevin Nieveld lined out.
Amsterdam Pirates then decided the game in the next two innings.
In the sixth, Ian Delemarre took over the pitching for HCAW.
He walked Jesse Aussems, who then moved on a sac-bunt by Rashid Gerard and scored the tying run on a single by Linoy Croes.
An outfield-error enabled Croes to advance to second base, then scored the go-ahead run when a throwing error followed on a grounder by Nick Urbanus, who himself ended up on third base.
Moments later, Urbanus scored on a grounder by Michael Duursma.
A lead-off homerun in the seventh inning by Danny Rombley, his first in an Amsterdam-uniform, lifted the lead to 7-4.
Amsterdam scored its eighth run in the top of the ninth off of Moreno Vork, who made his big league-debut.
He was greeted with a lead-off single by Remco Draijer, who advanced on a grounder, stole third base and scored on a fielder's choice-grounder by Patrick Bok.
