Roger Bernadina makes debut with Mets
Nederlands

FORT MYERS / JUPITER / KISSIMMEE / SARASOTA, Florida / SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (USA) - On Tuesday (March 8), seven professional players from the Netherlands played in Major League Spring Training-games.

One of them was outfielder Roger Bernadina, who played in his first game for his new club New York Mets. With this, Bernadina now has played in ten consecutive Spring Training-seasons. In 2007-2013, he played with the Washington Nationals. In 2014, Bernadina was in Spring Training with the Cincinnati Reds. Last year, he played in three Spring Training-games for the Colorado Rockies.

The 31-year old Bernadina made his debut in the Major League in 2008 with the Nationals, with whom he also played in the big league through 2013. He was then released in August, but signed two days later with the Phildelphia Phillies, with whom he completed the season. In 2014, Bernadina played in the Majors for the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers. As a Free Agent, he signed with the Colorado Rockies in December 2014, but played the entire 2015 season in Triple-A. Bernadina became a Free Agent again in November of last year, then was signed by the New York Mets on February 8 and was invited for Spring Training.

At Champion Stadium at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex @ Walt Disney World Resort in Kissimmee, the Atlanta Braves hosted the New York Mets and won 5-4 by scoring twice in the ninth inning.

In this game, Roger Bernadina made his Spring Training-debut for the New York Mets. He was the starting rightfielder and lead-off hitter for the Mets. In his first game, Bernadina was 1-for-2, scored once and also walked.

In his first at bat in the first inning, Bernadina led off the game with a pop-fly. In the third inning, Juan Lagares led off for the Mets with a walk and stole second base. He then moved to third on a single by Marc Krauss. With one out, the bases got loaded when Bernadina walked, but the inning ended when Ruben Tejada grounded into a double play.

With the Mets leading 3-2 in the top of the fifth, Bernadina led off with a single. He advanced to third base on an one-out single by Michael Conforto, then scored on a following single by <>Wilmer Flores to lift the lead to 4-2. In the bottom of the fifth, the Braves made it 4-3.

Bernadina was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the top of the sixth inning.

Also in the top of the sixth inning, Ozzie Albies entered the game as new short stop for the Braves. In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on second and third base and two outs, Albies struckout.

In the bottom of the ninth, trailing 4-3, Mallex Smith led off for the Braves with a double, then moved to third base when Albies grounded out. Moments later, Smith scored the tying run on a triple by Dansby Swanson, who then scored the winning run on 2-out single by Emilio Bonifacio.

At Hammond Stadium @ CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, the St. Louis Cardinals won 5-3 against the home-playing split-squad of the Minnesota Twins. Leading 3-2, the Cards decided the game by scoring twice in the top of the ninth inning.

In this game, righthander J.C. Sulbaran made his second pitching appearance for the Cardinals. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with the Cardinals leading 3-2, Sulbaran took the mound to become the fifth pitcher this afternoon for the Cards. Sulbaran did very well, as he retired all three batters he faced in the lone inning he threw. A pop-fly was followed by two flyouts. As Sulbaran preserved the small lead, he was credited with a Hold.

At Ed Smith Stadium in Saraota, the Boston Red Sox won 5-1 at the Baltimore Orioles. Both teams collected 12 basehits.

Sharlon Schoop started at second base for the Orioles and was 1-for-3.

In the bottom of the second inning, with two outs, J.J. Hardy singled, as did Schoop and following Joey Rickard, but the three runners were left behind, as a strikeout ended the at bat.

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, Hardy led off with a triple, but then was unable to score on a following grounder by Schoop to third base. Moments later, he did score on a grounder to second base by Rickard, which was to be the lone run for the Orioles.

Schoop lined out in the sixth inning, then was replaced in the top of the seventh.

At Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, the New York Yankees lost 1-0 at the Miami Marlins. The lone run was scored in the seventh inning. It was the second 1-0 loss in a row for the Yankees, who were shutout by Houston Astros on Monday.

Didi Gregorius started at short for the Yankees and was 1-for-3.

He led off the game with a flyout to rightfielder Ichiro Suzuki and grounded out in the third at bat.

In the top of the sixth, Gregorius led off with a single and moved to third base on an one-out single by Chase Headley, but then a double play followed. Gregorius was replaced in the bottom of the sixth.

At Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim visited and won 5-3 vs. a split-squad of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Andrelton Simmons was the starting short stop for the Angels and went 1-for-3.

In the top of the first inning, with one out, Simmons singled and moved when next batter Geovany Soto walked. However, a strikeout and force out followed.

Simmons flied out in the third inning and popped out in the fifth, then was replaced in the bottom of the sixth.

At Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale, the Cincinnati Reds visited the San Francisco Giants, who won 16-7.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Reds trailed 9-4, but scored three runs. With runners on first and second base and two outs Calten Daal entered the game as pinch-hitter and walked to load the bases. A pitching change followed, but the lead runner then scored on a wild pitch, which was followed by a 2-run double by Donald Lutz, that narrowed the deficit to 9-7.

In the bottom of the seventh, Daal remained in the game as short stop, as one of several defensive changes. The Giants rallied for five runs to take more distance and make it a 14-7 score.
