Neptunus completes sweep against Pioniers
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus briefly trailed 1-0 in the first inning, came alongside and took a 2-1 lead in the second inning against Vaessen Pioniers on Sunday (May 8) en route to a 5-1 victory to complete a 3-game sweep. It took awhile before Neptunus really could take some more distance, scoring another run in the sixth and adding two more in the eighth.

Neptunus collected 12 basehits, including three by Dwayne Kemp, who scored twice and batted in two runs.

Pioniers registered only five basehits off of four pitchers.

This was the eight consecutive victory for Neptunus, while Pioniers suffered its fifth loss in a row.

With today's victories by Neptunus and L&D Amsterdam Pirates and the loss of DSS, the latter was eliminated for the first two spots in the first half of the season. The top-two teams automatically qualify for the Play-Offs.

Curaçao Neptunus vs. Vaessen Pioniers
Both teams scored once in the first inning and Neptunus led only 2-1 after five at bats, but then added three runs in its next three innings to win 5-1 and complete a sweep.

Pioniers took a quick lead in the first inning, but failed to add more runs off of starter Kenny Van Den Branden. The Belgian righthander hit the first two batters he faced with a pitch, Zerzinho Croes and Mervin Gario. A force play-grounder by Quintin De Cuba followed, but then Kevin Dirksen singled on the rightfield-line to give Pioniers an 1-0 lead. Moments later, Dirksen was picked off at first base by catcher Dashenko Ricardo, which was costly, as next batter Brian Raap walked. A strikeout then ended the inning, which could have been more productive. Pioniers was held scorelesss in the remainder of the game.

Neptunus immediately came alongside in its first at bat off of Nick Keur. Dwayne Kemp led off with a single, moved on a grounder by Benjamin Dille and scored on following single by Raily Legito, who was later forced out.

In the top of the second inning, with two outs and Stephen Henson (fielder's choice) on first base, Zerzinho Croes singled. However, Henson overran second base, slipped and was eliminated in a rundown.

In its second at bat, Neptunus scored another run to take a 2-1 lead. Christian Diaz led off with a single and stole second base, then scored on a 2-out single down the leftfield-line by Urving Kemp. Diaz scored shortly before Kemp was eliminated at second base trying to stretch his hit into a double.

Neptunus failed to add more distance and left the bases loaded in two of the next three innings. In the third, Benjamin Dille walked with one out, but was eliminated after a pick-off. In the fourth, the Rotterdam-squad got the bases loaded with one out when Dashenko Ricardo and Christian Diaz singled and Rien Vernooij walked. But they all were left behind, as Nick Keur struckout the next two batters.

In the fifth, with two outs, Neptunus got the bases loaded again. With Raily Legito (single) and Gianison Boekhoudt (double) on base, Dashenko Ricardo got an intentional pass to set up a force play. Hereafter, a flyout ended the inning and so, three runners were left behind for the second time.

In the bottom of the sixth, Neptunus was able to add another run. Rien Vernooij led off with a single, which led to a pitching change. Maickel Rietel took over and saw Vernooij move on a sac-bunt by Daniel Fernandes and a wild pitch, then score on a single by Dwayne Kemp.

In the seventh inning, Neptunus almost again became the victim of a triple play. A week ago, HCAW turned an around-the-horn triple play. Today, Pioniers almost did the same. Raily Legito and Gianison Boekhoudt led off with walks and hereafter Dashenko Ricardo grounded the ball towards third base. There, Legito was forced out by third baseman Mervin Gario, who threw the ball to second baseman Stephen Henson to eliminate Boekhoudt. The throw to first baseman Shurman Marlin followed, but Ricardo beat the throw to avoid another triple play.

Neptunus scored two more runs with two outs in the eighth to make it a 5-1 score. In this at bat, reliever Sedley Karel walked Daniel Fernandes with one out, then gave up a runscoring single to Dwayne Kemp with two outs. Later, Kemp stole second base and adanced on a throwing error, then scored on a single by Benjamin Dille.
