Simmons & Schoop register two basehits

GOODYEAR / TEMPE, Arizona / CLEARWATER / KISSIMMEE / LAKELAND / PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida (USA) - On Wednesday (March 9), seven Dutch professionals played in Spring Training-games.

It was a productive afternoon for Andrelton Simmons and Jonathan Schoop, who both collected two basehits starting for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Baltimore Orioles respectively.

At Tempe Diablo Stadium in Tempe, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was a game with a lot of runs and basehits. The two teams combined on 26 runs and 36 hits, with the game ending in a 13-13 tie. The Dodgers collected 20 hits.

The Dodgers trailed 8-5, then came alongside in the top of the sixth and added four runs in the seventh. With the Dodgers leading 13-10 in the bottom of the ninth, Jharel Cotton became the new pitcher. He got the bases loaded via two singles and a hit batter, then gave up a baseclearing, 3-run double to Roberto Baldoquin that made it a 13-13 score.

Andrelton Simmons started at short for the Angels and was 2-for-3, scored once and batted in a run.

Trailing 1-0, the Angels scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Scott Kazmir. A single by Albert Pujols tied the score, then a single by Daniel Nava made it 2-1. With runners on first and third base, Simmons also singled to bring in Pujols to make it a 3-1 score in favor of the Angels.

In the third inning, with the score at 5-5 and Daniel Nava (single) on first base, Simmons singled again to bring him to third base. Moments later, Simmons stole second base. With one out, Nava scored on a grounder by Johnny Giavotella, which brought Simmons to third base. He then scored the seventh run for the Angels on a wild pitch.

Simmons flied out in the fifth inning, then was replaced in the top of the sixth.



At Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, the Texas Rangers won 11-5 at the Cincinnati Reds. The Rangers rallied for four runs in the ninth inning and collected 18 basehits.

Jurickson Profar started at short for the Rangers and was 1-for-3. Calten Daal was the starting short stop for the Reds and was 0-for-2.

Profar lined out in the second inning and flied out in the fourth. With the Rangers leading 3-0, Profar got his third at bat in the sixth inning. Pinch-hitter Joey Gallo then led off with a walk and moved on a single by Ryan Rua. He then scored when Profar also singled. Profar was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the seventh.

Daal got his first at bat in the third inning. He then led off and reached on an error, but was then eliminated in a double play. In the bottom of the fifth, he struckout, then was replaced in the top of the seventh.



At Bright House Networks Field in Clearwater, the Baltimore Orioles played against a split-squad of the Philadelphia Phillies and lost 8-4.

Jonathan Schoop was the starting second baseman for the visiting Orioles and went 2-for-3.

In the top of the first inning, with one out, Schoop singled off of starting pitcher Alec Asher, who then followed with two strikeouts. In the third inning, with the Orioles trailing 3-0, Manny Machado hit a 2-run homerun that made it a 3-2 score. Hereafter, Schoop grounded out.

In the sixth inning, Schoop got his third at bat in the game and led off with a single, but he was then forced out when next batter Chris Davis grounded into a double play. He was then replaced in the bottom of the seventh inning.



At Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, the Detroit Tigers win 11-5 vs. the visiting Washington Nationals.

Spencer Kieboom was the starting catcher for the Nationals, walked and scored a run.

Kieboom grounded out in his first at bat in the third inning. In the top of the fifth, with the Tigers leading 7-0, the Nationals scored two runs. With two outs, Kieboom walked and Ben Revere singled, then both scored on a following double by Daniel Murphy.

Kieboom was replaced in the bottom of the sixth inning.



At Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee, the Atlanta Braves visited the Houston Astros and lost 8-5. The Astros rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Ozzie Albies started at short stop for the Braves and was one of two players who played the entire game, the other being outfielder Mallex Smith. Albies batted second and went 0-for-5. In the first inning, facing Cy Young Award-winner Dallas Keuchel, he grounded out. Trailing 2-0 in the third, with one out and a runner on first base, Albies grounded out again. Hereafter, Freddie Freeman homered to make it a 2-2 tie.

In the fifth, in his third at bat, Albies flied out. Hereafter, he struckout in the seventh and flied out in the ninth.



At Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, the home playing New York Mets played a 4-4 tie in 10 innings against the New York Yankees.

Didi Gregorius was the lead-off hitter and starting short stop for the Yankees and went 1-for-3.

In the first inning, Gregorius led off the game with a single off of starting pitcher Jacob deGrom. But he was then eliminated when a double play followed.

Gregorius then grounded out in the third and fifth inning. In the seventh inning, Gregorius was one of the players that was replaced.

The Mets scored all their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
