DSS vs. Pickles UVV
The opener of this 3-game series had some suspense to offer and was an attractive confrontation.

DSS opened the score with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Gilian van Lith. Joffrey Heus led off with a single, then an error followed on a sacriice bunt by Menno Lenting. The two moved on a sac-bunt by Melvin Perdue, then Ryan Miner followed with a runscoring single. That moved Lenting to third base and he scored on a force play-grounder by Tino van Erk. The inning ended when Van Erk was eliminated at third base trying to advance on a single by Seb Visser.

UVV left a runner in the first inning and saw DSS turn a double play in the second at bat. They then scored their first run in the top of the third inning off of starter Donny Breek. With one out, Dennis Ribbens walked, then advanced on a double by Julian Rip, who returned to the line-up after having being sidelined with a leg-injury. Ribbens then scored on a grounder by Berend Ruben.

After DSS stranded a runner on second base in its third at bat, UVV came alongside in the fourth. With one out, Mike Bazuin doubled, then scored when an error was made on a 2-out grounder by Tim Veraghtert.

UVV then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. Lead-off hitter Dennis Ribbens was hit by a pitch, then scored on a 2-out double by Omar Willams. The latter moved to third base on a passed ball, but then stranded when Donny Breek closed with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the fifth, DSS came back immediately to make it a 3-3 score. With two outs, Melvin Perdue reached on a throwing error and scored on a double by Ryan Miner.

In the top of the sixth, Breek gave up a 2-out double to Tim Veraghtert and was replaced by Gijs Timmer, who then closed the inning with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the sixth, DSS broke the 3-3 tie. Seb Visser led off with a single and advanced when a throwing error followed. He then moved on a wild pitch and later scored on a passed ball. DSS now led 4-3, but this time held onto the lead for the remainder of the game.

After UVV left a runner in the seventh, DSS added a run in its seventh off of reliever Thijs Steenwijk. Melvin Perdue led off with a walk, then advanced to third base on a single by Seb Visser and scored on a following single by Sven van de Sanden. Ruben Prins added another single, but this time, Visser was eliminated at the plate trying to score.

UVV stranded two more runners in the top of the eighth, while DSS scored two more insurance runs moments later. Rick Heijman took over the pitching for UVV. With one out, he got the bases loaded when Joffrey Heus walked and Menno Lenting and Melvin Perdue both singled. That brought in new pitcher Kevin van Veen, who then walked Ryan Miner and gave up a sacrifice fly to Tino van Erk that lifted the lead to 7-3.

In the top of the ninth inning, UVV brought the suspense back by scoring three runs. Dennis Ribbens led off with a single off of reliever Max Ploegstra. Hereafter, UVV got runners and second and third base when an outfield-error followed on a single by Rick Kuipers. A wild pitch then led to the first run and a walk for Berend Ruben gave UVV another runner. After Ploegstra followed with a strikeout, closer Kevin Geestman took over the pitching. He began with a wild pitch, which led to the next run, then gave up a double to Steven van Reem that narrowed the deficit to 7-6. Jeremy Filipek was then inserted as pinch-runner for Van Reem and he moved to third base on a grounder. Geestman then closed the game with a strikeout to secure the victory.
