Curaçao Neptunus vs. De Glaskoning Twins
Neptunus was silenced by Brendan Schoemaker, who gave up only three hits in the six innings he pitched, while striking out eight batters.
However, the Rotterdam-squad managed to score two early runs.
The righthander was only used in relief this season by Twins and made his first start tonight.
After Twins had left a runner on first base in its first at bat, Neptunus opened the score in the bottom half.
Dwayne Kemp led off with a single, stole second base, moved on a grounder by Stijn van der Meer, then scored on a following grounder by Christian Diaz.
Schoemaker retired the side in the second inning (two strikeouts), but then gave up the second Neptunian run in the third at bat.
The righthander initially began with another strikeout, then a flyout accounted for the second out.
Dwayne Kemp then singled and stole second base again.
He moved on a wild pitch, then scored the second run on an infield-hit by Stijn van der Meer.
Neptunus was retired in order again (two strikeouts) in the fourth.
In the fifth, Shaldimar Daantji led off with a walk, but later was caught stealing.
In the sixth, Neptunus got its third runner into scoring position when Christian Diaz reached on an error with two outs.
He then stole second base and advanced on a wild pitch.
Next batter Gianison Boekhoudt walked, but the inning ended when Daniel Fernandes fouled out.
Fernandes played at third base tonight, which is the regular position of Raily Legito.
The veteran will not by eligible to play in the first two games of this series due to his suspension (he sat out his first game the day after the bench-clearing), but is available again for the third game next Sunday.
When the suspension of Dwayne Kemp is upheld (the appeal probably will be handled coming week), he will miss the 3-game series against Kinheim in a week, but Neptunus then will have Legito back fulltime.
With this, Neptunus has an additional player during each of these series.
Legito also will be eligible again next Tuesday when the halted game is re-scheduled to be played in its entirety.
When Kemp's case is not handled before Tuesday, he also can play in the evening.
Kemp tonight played at second base to fill in for regular Benjamin Dille, who might be out for six weeks due to a knee-injury he sustained during last weeks European Champions Cup-tournament.
Rookie Shadrach Meulens was behind the plate tonight, replacing Dashenko Ricardo, who surprised everyone earlier in the week by announcing his retirement, effective immediately.
Gianison Boekhoudt, who is a more experienced catcher, played at his regular position at first base.
Lefthander Diegomar Markwell started for Neptunus and gave up only four basehits in 7 1/3 inning.
He retired the side in the second and third inning, then saw Twins get into scoring position for the first time in the fourth.
With one out, he walked Jeffrey Arends, then hit Anthony Vrolijk with a pitch with two outs.
But a force play then ended the at bat.
In the fifth, Bob van der Meer singled with one out for Twins.
The brother of Neptunus-infielder Stijn van der Meer then moved on a sacrifice bunt, but was left behind.
Still leading only 2-0, Neptunus added a run in the bottom of the seventh off of new pitcher (and former Neptunian) Floris Timmer.
He gave up a lead-off single to Steven Wharwood, who then moved on a sacrifice bunt by Shaldimar Daantji and a single by Urving Kemp.
A single by Shadrach Meulens then enabled Wharwoord to score and make it a 3-0 score.
Twins had something in the making in the top of the eighth when Neptunus had to go to the bullpen twice.
With one out, Jarreau Martina singled and advanced on a wild pitch.
Next batter Bart Hanegraaff walked and that led to the first pitching change.
Markwell was relieved by Berry van Driel, who ran into problems quickly.
He was greeted with a runscoring single by Jeffrey Arends, then walked Berry van Donselaar, which loaded the bases.
Van Driel was replaced by Loek van Mil, who avoided more runs being given up by striking out the next two batters.
In the top of the ninth, the tall righthander retired the side to complete the game.
