Nederlands

GIJANG-GUN, BUSAN (South Korea) - The Netherlands Women Baseball Team won 9-4 on Friday (September 9) against Hong Kong in its third game in the Consolation Round of the World Championship Women Baseball in South Korea.

With the victory, the Orange women recorded two firsts. It was the first time that the Netherlands has won against Hong Kong after having lost the first two games against the Asian team in the past. It also was the first time that the Netherlands recorded two victories in a World Championship. In its previous three Championships combined, the Netherlands won only one game. After the incident, all games were moved to another playing site.

Hong Kong had begun the Consolation Round with two big wins against India (10-0) and Pakistan (12-1). The Dutch women close this second round on Saturday against Pakistan.

The Netherlands collected ten basehits, including two by Marije Filius and Kyra van Genderen. Sascha Egas batted in two runs.

Netherlands vs. Hong Kong
The Netherlands opened the score in the first inning with two outs. Famke Gildemacher then walked, stole second base and moved to third base on a single by Marije Filius. A double-steal situation then led to the first run. Walks for Bianca Mooi and Sofie van de Wiel then loaded the bases, but three runners were left behind.

After keeping Hong Kong scoreless in its first two innings, Dutch starter Loes Asmus gave up two runs in the third. Both were unearned, as an error was involved.

Trailing 2-1, the Orange squad turned the game its way with a 5-run rally in the bottom of the third inning. Marije Fillius and Bianca Mooi led off with singles, then Sofie van de Wiel followed with a runscoring double and Sascha Egas added a 2-run triple. Inger Wieringa then connected for the fifth consecutive basehit and brought in the fourth run in the at bat. Wieringa moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Kyra van Genderen, then scored when next batter Isabelle Markies doubled to increase the lead to 6-2.

The Netherlands added three unearned runs in the sixth inning. With two outs, pinch-runner Winke Verdick moved on a wild pitch and a single by Kyra van Genderen, then scored in a double-steal. The bases got loaded when Isabelle Markies was hit by a pitch and Esther Maliepaard walked. That led to a pitching change, then two more runs were added when Famke Gildemacher and Marije Filius both walked.

Loes Asmus got some baserunners in the third and fourth inning, but Hong Kong then stranded three runners in the two at bats combined. She retired the side in the sixth. Hong Kong was able to do some scoring again in the top of the seventh. With one out, the bases got loaded, then pinch-hitter Ka-Mun Lau delivered a runscoring single. Ciska Welboren was brought in as new Dutch pitcher. After an infield-fly, she walked Wing-I Cheung, which led to a run made it a 9-4 score. That also became the final score, as Welboren closed the inning and the game with a strikeout.
