Today's game not only saw five solid innings of Canadian pitcher Jeremy Filipek on the mound for UVV, as well for HCAW's lefthander Jim Ploeger, it also had a surprising umpiring crew. The game was initially removed from the schedule, as there was no playing site available. UVV and HCAW both couldn't use their home field, as their respective Rookie League-teams were scheduled to open their regular seasons at home today. The game was therefore scheduled to be played at the site of Houten Dragons in Houten, but that club also had a home-game scheduled of its own team to start the regular season. When news broke that UVV was to withdraw its Rookie League-team for this season and the first two games of that team were removed from the schedule, the exhibition game between UVV and HCAW returned on the schedule, now to be played at the site of UVV in Vleuten. In the meantime, the originally named umpires for the game had been re-assigned to officiate other (regular season) games and no other umpires were named for the UVV vs. HCAW exhibition game. UVV solved the problem, as former big league and international umpire Jan Kuipers, whose son Rick is a player of UVV, put back on his uniform to be the Home Plate Umpire. He was assisted by Ruud van Zetten, who is the current Treasurer of UVV, but also is the former Chairman of the KNBSB. In the past, Van Zetten had been active several years as an umpire, primarily in softball.

Canadian righthander Jeremy Filipek made his second start for UVV today. A week ago, he pitched the first two innings for UVV against Curaçao Neptunus.

In 2012-2013, Filipek pitched for the team of Midland College (Junior College). In his first year there, he was 7-3 with two saves and a 4.15 ERA, striking out 41 batters in 43 1/3 inning in 20 games (three as starter). In his second season with Midland, he was mainly used as a starter in the 16 games he pitched (12 starts). He was 6-2 with a 3.42 ERA and struckout 58 batters in 52 2/3 inning. In 2013, the team won the Conference Championship and qualified to play in the NJCAA World Series.

Filipek then went on to study at and pitch for the team of the University of Texas at San Antionio. There, he was 2-1 with an 1.80 ERA in his first season, pitching in 18 games and striking out 24 batters in 25 innings, while giving up 23 hits and walking 19. In 2015, he closed his college-career with an 1-1 record, four saves and a 3.06 ERA in 22 games. He then struckout 17 batters, walked 11 and gave up 31 basehits in 32 1/3 inning. While pitching for UTSA, he only appeared in relief.

In 2014, Filipek pitched for Draci Brno in the Czech competition. In that year, he also participated with Draci in the European Champions Cup Qualifier. That tournament was played at the team's home site in Brno and was won by Rimini (Italy), which won 9-2 in the final against Neptunus.

In the past winter-season in Australia, Filipek pitched in the minors for Perth Heat and was on the reserve-list for the main-squad that played in the Australian Baseball League.

Today, the Canadian righthander pitched five fine innings and gave up three hits, while striking out three batters. He retired the first five batters he faced, then gave up a 2-out single to Julian Goins in the second inning, followed by a walk for Levine Gabriëls. The two stranded, as Filipek closed with a strikeout.

With two outs in the third inning, he gave up a single to Boyd Tuhumury, but he also was left behind. After having retired the side in the fourth, Filipek gave up a 2-out single to Gianni Frolijk, who then stole second base. The inning ended when Filipek successfully picked Frolijk off on second base.

UVV faced lefthander and former teammate Jim Ploeger, who also threw five solid innings, striking out six batters. He gave up a lead-off single to Omar Williams in the second inning, but he was left behind, as the next three batters were retired in order, two of them with a strikeout. Ploeger retired the side in both the first and third inning.

In the fourth at bat, Omar Williams reached base again with two outs, this time on an error. He then stole second base, but stranded again.

In the fifth, UVV opened the score. Berend Ruben led off with a walk, then moved on a single by Sergino Martis. Hereafter, Mike Bazuin grounded into a double play, but that brought Ruben to third base. He then scored when Dennis Ribbens followed with a single. The latter stole second base, but then was left behind, as Ploeger closed with a strikeout.

In the sixth inning, Marciano Philippi led off with a single for HCAW off of new pitcher Norbert Jongerus. He stole second base, moved on a passed ball, but stranded on third base, as Jongerius then retired three batters in a row. For UVV, Sven Jongejans singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth off of Tim Niekerk, but didn't get beyond first base.

HCAW then came alongside in the top of the seventh inning, but failed to add more runs, as it left the bases loaded. New pitcher Rick Heijman was greeted with a single by Rossini Frolijk, who advanced on a wild pitch. With one out, the bases got loaded when Kevin Weijgertse walked and Raoell Kortstam singled. An infield-fly then accounted for the second out, but then Jelle Blaauw walked and that led to the tying run. Three runners were then left behind, as Heijman ended the inning with a struikeout.

UVV stranded a runner on third base in its seventh at bat. Berend Ruben led off with a double, which led to a collission between leftfielder Marciano Philippi and centerfielder Boyd Tuhumury. Philippi injured himself and was replaced out of precaution. A walk for Sergino Martis led to another baserunner, but hereafter, a flyout, force play and strikeout followed. In its final two innings, UVV got only one more baserunner.

A special moment happened in the bottom of the eighth inning. Gijs van Els became the new pitcher for HCAW and faced lead-off hitter Rick Kuipers, the son of Home Plate Umpire Jan Kuipers. The at bat ended with Kuipers calling his son out on strikes.

HCAW left three more runners in scoring position in its final two innings. In the eighth, Roelie Henrique reached on an error with two outs and stole second base, but stranded. In the ninth, HCAW got the bases loaded with no outs off of Quinn Tramm. Vince Rooi led off with a walk, Kevin Weijgertse singled, then Raoell Kortstam also walked. But hereafter, an infield-fly and double play ended this scoring opportunity.
