Netherlands baseball-women close World Championship with victory
Nederlands

GIJANG-GUN, BUSAN (South Korea) - The Netherlands Women Baseball Team closed the World Championship Baseball Women on Saturday (September 10) with a 14-4 victory against Pakistan. For the Orange-women, this was their fourth and last game in the Consolation Round.

The Netherlands collected eight basehits, including four by Sascha Egas, who had two doubles, one triple and batted in six runs.

With the win, the Netherlands ended in third place in the Consolation Round, which gives the squad ninth place in the Overall Standings. While the finish is not the highest ranking for the Netherlands, it can be stated that this was the most successful World Championship for the Orange squad. In its previous three participations combined, the team won only one game. This time, the Netherlands registered three victories and finished ahead of three other countries in a field-of-participants of twelve teams. Two years ago, the Netherlands finished in eight and last place after losing 4-0 to Hong Kong. In 2012, when also eight teams participated, the Netherlands finished in seventh place after winning 10-8 vs. Cuba. In 2010, the Netherlands participated for the first time in a World Championship. Back then, ten countries participated and the Netherlands finished in tenth and last place.

In the Super Round, Japan shutout South Korea 6-0 to remain unbeaten. With that, Japan, the reigning world champion, ended in first place to become the first finalist of the tournament. Canada nipped Chinese Taipei 2-1 to finish in second place and become the second finalist. Japan and Canada will meet each other in the Final on Sunday-evening, starting at 6 PM local time.

Earlier on Sunday, Venezeula and Chinese Taipei meet in the bronze medal-game.

Netherlands vs. Pakistan
In the top of the first inning, Pakistan got three of its first five batters on base, but was unable to score. The Netherlands then scored four runs in its first at bat off Sadia Bibi, who started for Pakistan, which participated in its first World Championship.

With one out in the first inning, Esther Maliepaard and Famke Gildemacher both reached on errors, which led to the first run. After Marije Filius had walked, Bianca Mooi and Sofie van de Wiel both delivered runscoring single. A double by Sascha Egas then lifted the lead to 4-0.

Pakistan scored its first run in the second inning off of Dutch starter Thari Diefenbach. With one out, Sadia Begum walked, stole second base and advanced on a single by Zainab Riaz. A double-steal situation then led to the run.

The Orange got the run back immediately in its second inning. With two outs, Esther Maliepaard singled and later scored on a single by Famke Gildemacher.

Trailing 5-1, Pakistan narrowed its deficit to only 5-4 by scoring three runs in the top of the third. The Asian squad got the bases loaded via three walks, then a wild pitch led to the first run. Fazila Akhlaq followed with a 2-run double to make it 5-4 and led to a pitching change. Berber Jansen took over, saw Akhlaq being eliminated, but then walked Iram Khalid. The inning ended with a nice double play after rightfielder Marije Filius had made a catch.

In the bottom of the third, the Netherlands made it 6-4. Marije Filius then led off with a walk. A pitching change followed, then Filius moved on a balk and a wild pitch, then scored on a 2-out triple by Sascha Egas.

Pakistan was held scoreless in the remainder of the game, while the Netherlands scored four runs in both the fourth and fifth inning to lift the lead to 14-4 and end the game via the mercy-rule.

In the fourth, Kyra van Genderen struckout, but reached on a passed ball, then scored on an error. With one out, the bases got loaded on three walks, then Sofie van de Wiel was hit by a pitch that led to an automatic run. Hereafter, Sascha Egas brought in two runners with a single.

In the fifth, an error and a wild pitch led to the first two runs in this at bat. With Famke Gildemacher at third base and pinch-hitter Winke Verdick at second base and one out, pinch-hitter Annemiek Koehorst walked to load the bases. That brought Sascha Egas in the batter's box and she again made good contact. She delivered a 2-run, walk-off double that made it 14-4 and ended the game.

Sascha Egas was 4-for-4 and only missed the homerun to hit-for-the-cycle. She didn't score herself, but batted in six.
