Australia, South Africa open WBC Qualifier with convincing win
Nederlands

BLACKTOWN, Greater Western Sydney, New South Wales (Australia) - Australia and South Africa have opened the first World Baseball Classic Qualifier on Thursday (Febuary 11) with convincing victories at Blacktown Baseball Stadium, which is located in Blacktown, just outside of Sydney. However, both Australia and South Africa decided their game late.

In the afternoon, South Africa opened with a 7-1 win vs. New Zealand, but led only 3-0 when the ninth inning began. In the evening, Australia won 11-1 vs. the Philippines in a 7-inning mercy-rule game but led only 4-1 after six innings.

With this, Australia and South Africa now will meet each other on Friday. The winner of that game advances to the all-deciding Final on Sunday. On Saturday, the losing team meets the winner of the match-up between New Zealand and the Philippines, who also will face each other on Friday. The losing team of this last game is eliminated.

In March, two more Qualifying Tournaments follow. The fourth and last tournament will be played in September. The winners of these four tournaments qualify for next years World Baseball Classic.

Canada, China, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Cuba, Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, South Korea, USA and Venezuela already have qualified, based on their accomplishments during the last Classic in 2013. Just as in 2013, the World Baseball Classic will have the status again as World Championship. Back then, the Dominican Republic won the title and was crowned as World Champion. In 2011, the Netherlands was the final team to capture the World Championship-title in a World Cup Tournament old-style, which then was held in Panama.
