DSS vs. Pickles UVV
In today's game, a lot hapened and there were some rare situations.
There were 52 baserunners, 26 by each team.
Both teams got several scoring opportunities, but in total, 26 runners were left behind, 14 by DSS, 12 by UVV.
There were three different kind of double plays, including a non-force out double play and a line drive double play.
There was a runner being eliminated at first base after hitting a basehit.
There was a missed bunt on a third strike.
There was a tie-break, there were 14 defensive changes, there were nine pitchers.
There was an errant pick-off with the bases loaded resulting in a run.
There was an umpiring felling ill, resulting in a change of umpires and there was one official scorer.
But it was a very attractive game, which had a lot to offer.
DSS trailed twice with a 3-run difference, but came back strong and had a spectacular finish to win in the tenth inning.
After a scoreless first inning, UVV opened the score with two runs in the top of the second inning off of starter Mike Groen.
Omar Williams led off with a single, then scored when Sergino Martis homered with one out.
DSS got one run back in its second at bat, but UVV added two more runs in the third inning to raise the lead to 4-1.
For DSS, Ryan Miner led off with a walk in the bottom of the second and went on to score the first run for the home team on a sacrifice fly by Seb Visser.
UVV reacted with two runs.
Rick Kuipers led off with a walk, then Dennis Ribbens singled.
The two moved on a sacrifice bunt by Julian Rip, which was followed by a runscoring single by Omar Williams.
With two outs, the bases got loaded when Sergino Martis walked.
Hereafter, a throwing error during a pick-off at second base enabled Ribbens to score from third base and make it 4-1.
DSS got another run back in the third inning when Mitchel Dautzenberg led off with a double and scored on an one-out single by Menno Lenting.
However, at this stage of the game, it appeared that DSS was unable to get nearer.
Especially, as UVV took more distance and starting pitcher Jurjen van Zijl did fine.
The righthander held DSS scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning, while being supported with another run in the top of the fifth.
In the previous inning, the DSS-defense had turned a double play, but now saw UVV score its fifth run.
Julian Rip led off with a single and scored on a following double by Omar Williams, which led to a pitching change.
With UVV now leading 5-1, Gijs Timmer took over, but was greeted with a single by Steven van Reem, which brought Williams to third base.
Hereafter, DSS turned a great and rare double play.
Sergino Martis grounded to short stop Mitchel Dautzenberg, who threw the ball to second baseman Joffrey Heus to force out Van Reem.
When he was about to throw the ball to first base, Williams took off from third base towards the plate, but didn't ran that hard.
Instead of throwing the ball to first base to complete the double play there, Heus turned and threw it to catcher Koen Halderman.
He got the ball in time to tag out Williams at the plate to complete the non-force double play.
After UVV was retired in order in the top of the sixth, DSS scored its third run in the home half of the at bat.
Ryan Miner led off with a single.
He then advanced to third base on a single down the righftield-line by Koen Halderman.
After having reached first base, Halderman briefly left the base while the ball was coming in from rightfield.
Halderman was tagged in a close play and was called out by 3B Umpire Jos van Eijsden, who took the call from the left side of the infield, but had clear view into the action from there.
Moments later, Miner scored on a grounder by Tino van Erk to make it 5-3.

UVV made is 3-run difference again in the top of the seventh.
Julian Rip led off with a walk and moved on the fourth basehit in four at bats by Omar Williams.
With two outs, the bases got loaded when Norbert Jongerius walked and Rip scored on a following single by Sven Jongejans.
Hereafter, Mark van Deursen took over the DSS-pitching and retired the next batter, meaning three runners were left behind.
From the bottom of the seventh inning on, despite trailing 6-3, signals showed that DSS might have something in the making, as it started the get more productive on the bases.
In the seventh, DSS got the bases loaded, but two force outs ended the inning.
After UVV had stranded two runners in the top of the eighth, DSS started its strong comeback in the bottom of the eighth.
With a 6-3 lead, José Moreno took over the UVV-pitching for starter Jurjen van Zijl, but ran into problems.
He walked lead-off hitter Tino van Erk, whose pinch-runner Tommy van de Sanden then scored on a following double by Seb Visser.
A walk for Sven van de Sanden followed and DSS got runners on second and third base via a sacrifice bunt by Mitchel Dautzenberg.
With two outs, Menno Lenting and Melvin Perdue delivered runscoring singles that tied the score!
Moreno was replaced by Thijs Steenwijk, who got the bases loaded when he walked Ryan Miner.
Steenwijk closed the inning with a strikeout, but it has become a complete new ball game.
After completion of the eighth inning, the 3-man umpiring crew got together, called both Head Coaches with them and left the field.
The reason for that was that Home Plate Umpire André Eijpe had fell ill and was leaving the game out of precaution.
After a 16-minute delay, the remaining two umpires returned to the field and 1B Umpire René Ras took over behind the plate, while Jos van Eijsden moved to first base.
Luckily, Eijpe was doing fine after the game and in the evening, he reported he was feeling well again.
A scoreless ninth inning followed and with that, the game went into extra innings.
With Kevin Geestman being the new pitcher for DSS, Norbert Jongerius (2nd base) and Sven Jongejans (1st base) were the tie-break runners for UVV in the top of the tenth inning.
Rookie Tijmen Takke led off with a line drive, which was caught by Geestman, who doubled up Jongejans at first base.
Hereafter, Rick Kuipers singled into centerfield, which brought in Jongerius.
With the ball coming in from centerfield, a brief collission at the plate followed with catcher Koen Halderman falling down.
A brief discussion followed regarding the collission-rule, but Halderman had simply falling down by accident and not because of the collission.
With that, UVV re-took the lead, 7-6.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Gilian van Lith (who was last Thursday's starter) took over the pitching for UVV.
With tie-break runners Sven van de Sanden (2nd base) and Mitchel Dautzenberg (1st base) on base, an attempt for a sacrifice bunt ended in a foul ball on the third strike and thus a strikeout.
They then advanced on a single by Menno Lenting, loading the bases.
That brought Ruben Prins in the batter's box.
In the top of the ninth inning, Prins had come in defensively, replacing centerfielder Melvin Perdue, who left due to a muscle-strain.
Prins went after the first pitch he saw and drilled the ball into centerfield for a walk-off, 2-run double that gave DSS a 8-7 victory.
