Convincing win Neptunus in first exhibition game

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Reigning champion Curaçao Neptunus played its first exhibition game of the season on Saturday (March 12) and met Orioles, which plays in the second highest league. Neptunus won the game, which lasted 7½ inning, 9-5.

Neptunus led only 1-0 after four innings, then added eight runs in the next three innings to eventually come to a convincing victory. Neptunus collected 14 basehits, including three by veteran Raily Legito. Opponent Orioles score four if its five runs in the final two at bats. The team has several former big league-players on its roster, who played in the highest league for have played for teams as Neptunus, Sparta-Feyenoord, The Hawks and ADO. One of the players added in the off-season is infielder Emersson Paula, who last season was the short stop for HCAW. Head Coach of Orioles is former big league- and Netherlands National Team-pitcher Orlando Stewart.

Neptunus will meet Orioles again on Sunday in Rotterdam. Initially, the game was scheduled on the site of Orioles in Bergschenhoek. However, the club got no permission to use its field yet for practices and games, as the municipality has yet to prepare it for the upcoming season. Work on the fields started on Friday and will be completed coming Wednesday. As the field of Orioles is unavailable this weekend, Sunday's game was moved to the site of Neptunus in Rotterdam.

There were two more games today involving big league-teams.
L&D Amsterdam Pirates registered its second exhibition win, winning 10-4 at De Glaskoning Twins.
HCAW won with a big 8-1 score vs. DSS on Saturday (March 12) to register its first exhibition win.

Vaessen Pioniers, Kinheim and UVV have no exhibition games scheduled this weekend, as they are conducting practice sessions. UVV traveled to Bergen op Zoom, where it practiced today at the site of the Wizards of Boz. The team wil play an intersquad-game there on Sunday.

The regular season opens on Thursday, April 14.

Curaçao Neptunus vs. Orioles
Neptunus opened the score in the first inning off of former big league-pitcher Derrick Isenia. With one out, Benjamin Dille homered, but that was to be the lone run scored by Neptunus in four innings. Isenia gave up a 2-out single in the second inning, then retired the side in the third.

Neptunus-starter Diegomar Markwell threw the first three innings. The lefthander gave up no hits, struckout four batters and retired the last seven batters in a row.

Berry van Driel then took over in the fourth. He allowed two batters to reached base, but also struckout three batters. With one out, Van Driel hit Glennet Paulo with a pitch, then gave up a 2-out single to Rik van Deursen, but they were left behind. Newcomer Steven van Groningen (ex-HCAW) became the new pitcher for Neptunus in the fifth.

Neptunus then took more distance in the bottom of the fifth off of Henk van Heijningen, who had taken over the pitching in the fourth. Shaldimar Daantji led off with a walk. Hereafter, Tim van Toorn was added to the batting order as extra hitter and also walked. Van Toorn is a player of the Unicorns Baseball Academy and was added for today's game. Next, an error on a force play-grounder by Dwayne Kemp resulted in a run. Van Toorn then scored on a grounder by Benjamin Dille, the MVP of last years Holland Series. A single by Raily Legito lifted the lead to 4-0.

In the top of the sixth, the Orioles scored their first run off of Van Groningen. Ray Winkel and Kelvin Knape led off with singles. A double play followed on a grounder by Suri Betrian, which moved Winkel to third base and he then scored when Nigel van der Tang singled.

Neptunus rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Urving Kemp led off with a double, newcomer Steven Wharwood followed with a single and then Shaldimar Daantji singled to bring in the lead runner. With two outs, Benjamin Dille and Raily Legito added RBI-singles to make it a 7-1 score.

Rookie Angelo Wicklert became the new pitcher for Neptunus in the top of the seventh inning. Wicklert, who is on the roster of Neptunus' Rookie League-team Tridents, was added to the team for today's game and began with a walk for Rubinet Koko, then also walked Emersson Paula with one out and Michael Winkel with two outs. Koko and Paula then both scored when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Michael Riekerk.

Neptunus reacted with two runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh off of new pitcher Duncan Gijsbertse. Christian Diaz, the Best Hitter of last season in the Dutch big league, led off with a double and Rien Vernooij followed with a single. In a double-steal situation, Diaz scored, then Vernooij went on to score on a force play-grounder by Steven Wharwood.

In the top of the eighth, Orioles narrowed the deficit to 9-5 by scoring two more runs. With one out, Kelvin Knape and Suri Betrian walked, then were awarded the next base when Wicklert balked. A single by Glennet Paulo and force play-grounder by Rubinet Koko then accounted for the runs in what was to be the final at bat in this game.
