Pickles UVV vs. DSS
On Saturday, DSS trailed 'only' three runs and then turned the game into an 8-7 victory in ten innings.
Today, the Haarlem-squad erased an 11-0 (!) deficit and went on to win 18-17 in one of the craziest games in history.
The eleven-run deficit is one of the biggest to be turned around into a victory in the long history of the Dutch big league.
Both UVV and DSS had two big rallies.
UVV scored eight runs in the second innning and six in the sixth at bat.
DSS scored seven runs in both the sixth and seventh inning.
Nine of the ten players used by DSS scored at least one run.
The lone exception is Mitchel Dautzenberg, who left the game with an injury.
Seven players registered at least one basehit, while seven also had at least one run batted in.
For UVV, eight of the nine starters scored at least once.
Seven players had at least one basehit.
The game started 26 minutes later than scheduled due to rain and maintenance to the field.
When the game went underway, UVV rallied for eight runs in the second inning, was leading 11-0 after four innings and was en route to a mercy-rule victory.
But that was not to happen, as the score was tied at 11-11 halfway the sixth inning!
As righthander Tim Halderman is still sidelined with an injury, Timo van Lingen started again in his place in this game.
The righthander retired the side in the first inning, but then gave up eight runs in the next at bat.

The 8-run rally in the second inning began and ended with a homerun by Omar Williams.
With that, he became one of only a few players to have hit two homeruns in one inning.
Williams led off the inning with a homerun to give UVV an 1-0 lead.
With one out, Matt Erickson singled in his first big league at bat.
The American pitcher arrived earlier in the morning and was inserted into the starting line-up as designated hitter to make him eligible to play this season.
Erickson replaces Canadian pitcher Jeremy Filipek, who threw only a few games for UVV before he got injured.
Since then, he was used only offensively in some games.
Erickson was scheduled to be used only as the designated hitter today, but eventually, he also needed to take the mound due to the bizarre development of the game.
Erickson advanced on a passed ball and a wild pitch, while Sergino Martis walked in between.
With two outs, UVV would score seven more runs to take a comfortable lead.
Erickson scored on a single by Sven Jongejans.
With runners on first and second base, Rick Kuipers walked, but that was followed by a throwing error, resulting in a run.
The bases got loaded when Dennis Ribbens walked.
Hereafter, two runs were scored on a single by Julian Rip, then Omar Williams followed with a 3-run homerun to lift the lead to 8-0.
DSS-starter Timo van Lingen struckout the side in the third inning, then was replaced by Rik Geestman in the fourth, but the lefthander would give up three runs.
He walked Sven Jongejans and Rick Kuipers.
A double play-grounder by Dennis Ribbens then resulted in only one out and that was followed by runscoring singles by Julian Rip and Omar Williams and an error that led to the third run.
With that, UVV now led 11-0 and needed only nine outs to end the game with a mercy-rule victory.
Kevin van Veen made his first start of the season for UVV.
He walked Menno Lenting with one out in the first inning, then gave up a single to Koen Halderman, but closed with two strikeouts.
In the second inning, the righthander retired the side.
In the third, Van Veen walked lead-off hitter Mitchel Dautzenberg, but he was eliminated in a double play.
Hereafter, Dautzenberg would leave the game with an injury, he already had sustained earlier in the game.
He was replaced by Tino van Erk, who moved to first base, while Tommy van de Sanden took over Dautzenberg's position at short.
In the fourth inning, DSS got runners on second and third base.
With one out, Ryan Miner singled and with two outs, Sven van de Sanden doubled, but a grounder followed.
Trailing 11-0, the comeback of DSS started with a 4-run rally with two outs in the top of the fifth inning.
With one out, Tino van Erk reached second base on an error and moved to third base on a grounder.
He then scored on a single by Menno Lenting.
DSS then got the bases loaded when Koen Halderman singled and Ryan Miner walked.
An error on a grounder by Seb Visser led to the next run and Sven van de Sanden followed with a 2-run double to make it a 11-4 score.
That led to a pitching change.
Kevin van Veen was replaced by Norbert Jongerius, who normally is an outfielder.
He was used as a pitcher in four other games, but then only closed, so his early entrance today was more or less a surprise.
UVV left two runners behind in its fifth at bat when DSS turned a double play and Geestman closed with a strikeout.

That this was to be a very bizarre game was underscored in the top of the sixth inning when DSS rallied for seven runs to make it an 11-11 tie!
Tommy van de Sanden led off with a walk, then Joffrey Heus walked with one out.
Menno Lenting followed with a runscoring single, which led to a pitching change.
Jongerius was replaced by Matt Erickson, who made an unscheduled pitching appearance.
It also meant that UVV lost its designated hitter and that pitchers had to bat for themselves.
Erickson ran into problems immediately, as six more runs were scored in this at bat.
Four of those runs were credited to Erickson, but all of them were unearned due to an error.
Erickson was greeted with a 2-run single by Koen Halderman.
After a grounder, the American righthander walked Seb Visser, then saw Sven van de Sanden reach on an error, which would have been the third out in the inning.
Instead, a run was scored and DSS had runners on first and third base.
The bases got loaded when Ruben Prins walked, then a wild pitch led to a run, followed by a 2-run single by Tommy van de Sanden that tied the score!
Another walk followed for Tino van Erk, then a grounder ended the bat, but it was a new ball game.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, UVV rallied for six runs to make it 17-11 in their favor.
Another comfortable lead, but again, UVV failed to hold onto it.
Jordan Illis and Omar Williams opened the sixth inning with a single.
Hereafter, Mark van Deursen took over the pitching, but he gave up runscoring double to Mike Bazuin that gave UVV a renewed lead, 12-11.
With one out, a balk accounted for the next run, then a single by Sergino Martis brought in another run.
When next batter Berend Ruben also singled, another pitching change followed.
Max Ploegstra took over, but he got the bases loaded when he walked Sven Jongejans.
A single by Rick Kuipers then brought in the next two runs and a wild pitch gave UVV another run, making it a 17-11 score.
The unthinkable happened in the top of the seventh inning.
DSS staged another 7-run rally to take an 18-17 lead and turn the game its way!
The Haarlem-squad got the bases loaded when Menno Lenting led off with a single, Koen Halderman walked and Ryan Miner also singled.
Seb Visser followed with a runscoring single, which marked the end of the pitching-debut of Matt Erickson, who was replaced by Thijs Steenwijk.
The new pitcher gave up a runscoring single by Sven van de Sanden, then walked Ruben Prins, which led to the next run.
With the bases loaded, Steenwijk followed with a strikeout, but he then gave up a baseclearing, 3-run double to Tino van Erk that tied the score again at 17-17!
And it also brought in another pitcher, as José Moreno took over.
He saw Joffrey Heus reach on an error.
That brought Van Erk to third base and he scored the go-ahead run on a force play-grounder by Menno Lenting.
It was to be the final run in this slugfest.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Max Ploegstra got two baserunners, but closed with a strikeout.
In the eighth, he walked lead-off hitter Sven Jongejans, who moved on a sacrifice bunt by Rick Kuipers.
A flyout followed, then Kevin Geestman became the next pitcher for DSS.
A flyout ended the at bat, stranding a runner on second base.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Geestman got two quick outs.
Jamie Verheyleweghen then was inserted as pinch-hitter in his first appearance in a few weeks after being sidelined with an injury.
Geestman struckout the Belgian player to end the remarkable game in which DSS turned an 11-0 deficit into an 18-17 victory!
