De Glaskoning Twins vs. Curaçao Neptunus
Neptunus was limited to only six basehits by 16-year old rookie Mic van de Ven, who held the Rotterdam-squad scoreless and struckout two batters in his big league-debut.
The righthander allowed only three runners to get into scoring position, but none of them reached third base.
The rookie was supported by some solid defense, as Twins turned four (!) double plays while he was on the mound.
Van de Ven was one of two Twins-pitchers today who made their debut in the big league.
The other was Belgian Brian Van Gaever, who took over in the ninth inning.
The two pitchers were added to the roster recently.
Belgian righthander Cedric Desmedt, who last pitched on May 31, has left the team, as he was unable to be with the squad all the time.
Japanese righthander Keiji Uezono, who threw a complete game 1-0 shutout on May 28 against Kinheim, also wasn't with the team this weekend.
As there no game scheduled a week ago after completion of the first half of the season, it was scheduled that he would return home to Japan for a brief period.
While being there, he attracted some kind of infection and needed to be hospitalized for treatment.
He was released from the hospital a few days ago and he is scheduled to be back in the Netherlands coming Friday.
In the first inning, with one out, Van de Ven hit Stijn van der Meer with a pitch, but hereafter, Raily Legito grounded into a double play.
In the second at bat, Van de Ven walked lead-off hitter Gianison Boekhoudt, but this time, Christian Diaz grounded into a double play.
Herafter, Daniel Fernandes singled, but he was caught stealing.
In the third, Steven Wharwood led off for Neptunus with a double, but was unable to advance on an infield-hit by Urving Kemp.
With one out, Dwayne Kemp grounded into the third double play in the three innings to end the inning.
With two outs in the fourth, Van de Ven walked Gianison Boekhoudt and gave up a single to Christian Diaz, but then closed with a strikeout.
In the fifth, Steven Wharwood led off with a single, then Shaldimar Daantji reached on an infield-hit with one out.
Moments later, Dwayne Kemp again grounded into a double play, the fourth made by the Twins-defense in five innings.
In the sixth, Neptunus left a runner behind on first base off of Van de Ven, who then was relieved in the seventh inning after a successful debut.
From that inning on, three Belgian pitchers took the mound for Twins.
Kenny Van Den Branden, also an Belgian, threw seven scoreless innings for Neptunus.
He allowed only two runners to get into scoring position, but amongst them was the lone runner in the first seven innings to reach third base.
Twins got into scoring position for the first time in the bottom of the fourth inning.
With one out, Berry van Donselaar singled, then Shurty Tremus walked with two outs, but they stranded.
In the fifth, with one out, Nick Peels hit a triple for Twins.
However, he was left on third base when a strikeout and flyout followed.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Neptunus scored its first run in the top of the eighth inning.
Dwayne Kemp led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Stijn van der Meer.
Hereafter, Raily Legito was hit by a pitch, then the bases got loaded with two outs when Christian Diaz walked.
Matthew Latta then took over the pitching for Ben Van Nuffel, but he hit Daniel Fernandes with a pitch, resulting in the first run of the game.
Latta closed with a strikeout, meaning three runners were left behind.
In the bottom of the eighth, Bayron Cornelisse took over the pitching for Kenny Van Den Branden and retired the side.
Neptunus then struck with five runs in the top of the ninth inning to raise the lead to 6-0.
Urving Kemp led off with a bunt-single, advanced to third base when a pick-off ended in an error, then scored on a single by Shaldimar Daantji.
The bases got loaded when Dwayne Kemp was hit by a pitch and Stijn van der Meer reached on an error.
A walk for Raily Legito led to the next run and a pitching change.
Brian Van Gaever, the third consecutive Belgian pitcher to throw for Twins in this game, took over to make his big league-debut with the bases loaded.
He saw Gianison Boekhoudt hit a sacrifice fly, which was followed by a runscoring double by Christian Diaz.
The bases were re-loaded when Daniel Fernandes walked, then a following walk for Steven Wharwood made it 6-0.
An infield-fly and strikeout ended the productive at bat.
In the bottom of the ninth, closer Loek van Mil retired the side (two strikeouts) to end the game.
In this game, five batters of Neptunus were hit by a pitch, which is the highest total this season.
It also is the highest total for one team in one game since six batters of UVV were hit on June 20 of last year.
