HCAW outscores DSS in Play-Down opener
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - HCAW opened the Play-Downs on Friday-evening (August 12) with a 5-1 victory against DSS.

DSS outhit HCAW 9-7, but also committed five costly errors, resulting in two unearned runs.

In HCAW's starting line-up, there was initially a surprising player, as pitcher Kaj Timmermans was listed ninth in the batting order as the starting second baseman for the Bussum-team. Timmermans, who is the announced starting pitcher for coming Sunday, was just a fill-in, as he was replaced by regular second baseman Roelie Henrique in the bottom of the first inning. Henrique arrived late in Haarlem due to work. While he was at the field just in time before the start of the game, Timmermans was inserted in the line-up to give Henrique some time to warm up.

HCAW opened the score in the first inning, but decided the game by scoring three runs in the three middle innings.

DSS vs. HCAW
HCAW opened the score quickly in the first at bat off of starter Tim Halderman. With one out, the righthander walked Vince Rooi. The veteran then advanced on a grounder and scored on a double by Kevin Nieveld to give the Bussum-squad an early lead.

In the bottom of the first inning, DSS got two baserunners off of starter Ian Delemarre, but was unable to score. Ryan Miner led off with a single and Tino van Erk singled with two outs, but a force out ended the at bat.

DSS came alongside in the bottom of the third inning. Lead-off hitter Ryan Miner walked and advanced on a bunt-single by Mitchel Dautzenberg. With two outs, he scored the tying run on a double by Mitchel Koot, but hereafter, the Haarlem-squad stranded two runners.

HCAW re-took the lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs with two outs. Julian Goins walked with one out, then stole second base with two outs. Hereafter, Levine Gabriëls also walked, but ball-four ended in a passed ball. That moved Goins to third base and he then scored when a throwing error followed, which brought Gabriëls to second base. Moments later, the latter scored on a double by Gianni Frolijk to make it 3-1.

HCAW turned a double play in the fourth inning, then added a run in the sixth. Julian Goins led off the at bat with a single and stole second base. With one out, a throwing error during a pick-off brought Goins to third base and he then scored on a double by Levine Gabriëls.

HCAW took more distance in the seventh inning. With two outs, Kevin Weijgertse reached on an error, the fifth by DSS in this game. Moments later, he advanced on a wild pitch, then scored on a double by Kevin Nieveld, which led to a pitching change. Timo van Lingen took over and closed the at bat with a strikeout.

Van Lingen didn't gave up additional runs. While DSS outhit HCAW, the pitching of the Bussum-team held the home team scoreless after the third inning and so recorded its first win in the Play-Downs.
