Neptunus opens Play-Offs with big shutout-win
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Reigning champion Curaçao Neptunus opened the Play-Offs on Friday-evening (August 12) with a big 12-0 shutout-victory against Kinheim.

Neptunus outhit Kinheim 12-4, including three by Dwayne Kemp and Dashenko Ricardo, who both also batted in four runs. Kemp also scored three runs and accounted for the offensive highlight with a grand slam homerun in a 7-run rally in the sixth inning.

Making his comeback in the Neptunus line-up was Rien Vernooij, who was the third baseman for the Rotterdam-squad, instead of veteran Raily Legito. Early June, Vernooij was handed an one-year suspension for his part in a game-ending bench-clearing brawl on May 27 against L&D Amsterdam Pirates. Vernooij was one of six players (three each of both teams) to be suspended, the others varying from three to ten games. In five cases, an appeal was filed, which resulted in a reducement of suspensions in four cases, including for Vernooij. He was now suspended for the remainder of the regular season and with that, he became eligible to play again for Neptunus during the postseason.

Kinheim vs. Curaçao Neptunus
Neptunus opened the score quickly off of Venezuelan righthander Luis Figuera Roman, who last weekend missed his start due to an injury. Tonight, he returned to the mound, but gave up three runs in the top of the first inning. Dwayne Kemp led off with a double and advanced on a single by Randolph Oduber. That was followed by an error, enabling Kemp to score the first run. Hereafter, Dashenko Ricardo followed with a 2-run homerun to make it 3-0. With two outs, Rien vernooij walked and Benjamin Dille singled, but they were left behind.

In its first at bat off of Diegomar Markwell, Kinheim got two baserunners with two outs. Kevin Moesquit and Bryan Engelhardt then both singled, but Markwell closed with a strikeout.

Neptunus got another scoring opportunity in the second inning. With two outs, Oduber struckout, but reached on a passed ball. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Ricardo doubled and Gianison Boekhout walked. But they all stranded when a flyout ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the second inning, Neptunus turned a double play, then came close to another run in the third. With two outs, Daniel Fernandes tripled, but he was left behind.

Neptunus turned another double play in the third inning, then took more distance in the top of the fourth. Dwayne Kemp and Randolph Oduber began with singles, then both scored on a double by Dashenko Ricardo to lift the lead to 5-0.

Kinheim got the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning. Thomas Bos led off with a walk and moved on a sacrifice bunt bunt, then Jasper Keijzer also walked. With two outs, Markwell also walked Kevin Moesquit to load the bases, but hereafter, the inning ended when powerhitter Bryan Engelhardt flied out.

In the top of the sixth, Neptunus struck again off of new pitcher Chiel Berkhout. The righthander walked Dashenko Ricardo and Gianison Boekhoudt, then gave up an one-out, runscoring double to Rien Vernooij. The bases then got loaded when Benjamin Dille walked. Berkhout then also walked Daniel Fernandes, which led to the next run and a pitching change. Rightfielder Julio Hernandez took over the pitching and was greeted with a runscoring single by Shaldimar Daantji that lifted the lead to 8-0 and kept the bases loaded. Hereafter, Dwayne Kemp connected well and drilled the ball over the leftfield-fence for a grand slam homerun to make it a 12-0 score. Hernandez then closed the inning by striking out Randolph Oduber and Dashenko Ricardo.

Kinheim produced only four basehits tonight off of two pitchers. The Haarlem-squad got into scoring position several times, but the Neptunian defense made three double plays and held Kinheim scoreless. In the seventh inning, Steven van Groningen closed the game for Neptunus and got three grounders. And with that, the game ended via the mercy-rule.
