45 Dutch professionals in Majors & Minors
Nederlands

LAS VEGAS, Nevada / DES MOINES, Iowa / MEMPHIS, Tennessee / NASHVILLE, Tennessee / MOOSIC, Pennsylvania / ALTOONA, Pennsylvania / PEARL, Mississippi (USA) - The first week of the regular season in the Major League and Minor League is in the books. The Major League-season went underway on Sunday (April 3) and on Thursday (April 7), the new season in most Minor Leagues opened. However, due to weather conditions there were several delays, postponements and cancellations in both the Majors and the Minors. Some games were re-scheduled for the next day to be part of a double-header.

In the Major League, five Dutch professionals started the season on 25-man rosters, being Didi Gregorius (New York Yankees), Andrelton Simmons (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), Xander Bogaerts (Boston Red Sox), Jonathan Schoop (Baltimore Orioles) and Kenley Jansen (Los Angeles Dodgers).

Gregorius homered in the first game of the season for the Yankees on Tuesday (April 5) after it had rained out the day before. The next day, he was 3-for-5. So far, in the first six games of the season, Gregorius is 7-for-21 (.333) with a double and a homerun, scored two runs and batted in three.

Simmons is 7-for-29 (.241), including two doubles, for his new team in eight games played through Tuesday. After going 0-for-3 in the first and second game, Simmons has a 6-game hitting streak hereafter.

Bogaerts went 0-for-5 in the season-opener, then 0-for-4 the next day. He then was 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored in the third game of the season. Through Tuesday, he is hitting 7-for-30 (.233) with three doubles in seven games. He scored seven runs and batted in two.

Also through Tuesday, Schoop has been very productive. He has played in seven games and has registered a basehit in the first six. Schoop is 6-for-23, including four doubles and one homerun, scored two runs and batted in five.

Jansen has pitched in two games so far and was successfully both times, as he earned two saves. In two innings, the righthander struckout three batters, walked none and gave up one hit.

18 professionals with a Dutch passport have begun the season in the Minor Leagues. Five of them in Triple-A and three in Double-A. There are ten players currently active in Single-A. Besides these 18, there are 20 more players currently on rosters for teams that will play in Single-A Short Season or Rookie League, but these seasons open in June.

Infielder Sharlon Schoop was scheduled to start the season with Norfolk Tides (Triple-A, Baltimore Orioles), while outfielder Chris Garia was on the roster of High Desert Mavericks (Single-A, Texas Rangers). However, they were assigned for Extended Spring Training before the start of the season, so it will take a little longer for them to play their first regular season-game.

Outfielder Randolph Oduber, who played in two games for the Washington Nationals during Spring Training, currently without a club. He was initially assigned to the Harrisburg Senators (Double-A), but he was released on April 2, five days before the start of the regular season.

When we combine the Major and Minor Leagues, there are now 45 players with a Dutch passport currently on rosters of professional teams, which are associated with Major League Baseball. Of these 45 players, 27 were born on Curaçao and eight on Aruba. Eight players are also born in the Netherlands, while two were born in the USA. Not included in this list are Dutch players who play in Asia, México or in Independent Leagues.

Of the Minor League-group, Roger Bernadina, Jurickson Profar, J.C. Sulbaran, Spencer Kieboom, Ozzie Albies, Ray-Patrick Didder and Jiandido Tromp all had notable starts, as they did well in the Opening Games of their respective teams.

Roger Bernadina, who was in Spring Training with the New York Mets, has begun the season with Las Vegas 51s, the Triple-A team of the Mets in the Pacific Coast League. At Cashman Field, the home site of the 51s in Las Vegas, Bernadina played in leftfield in the opener on Thursday and was 1-for-3, but that was a homerun that contributed in a come-from-behind 6-4 win against Fresno Grizzlies (Houston Astros). The Grizzlies led 4-2 after six innings, but then Travis Taijeron homered for the home team in the seventh to make it a 4-3 score and Bernadina led off with a homerun in the eighth to tie the score. Las Vegas then won in the ninth inning on a walk-off, 2-run homerun by Marc Krauss.

Bernadina didn't play on Friday in a 15-10 loss for Las Vegas, then the Saturday-game was cancelled due to weather conditions. It was re-scheduled for Sunday to be played before the regular scheduled game. However, the double-header had to be scrubbed due to more rain.

Jurickson Profar is the short stop for Round Rock Express, the Triple-A team of the Texas Rangers. On Thursday, at Principal Park in Des Moines, the Express won 7-3 their opening game at Iowa Cubs (Chicago Cubs) and Profar went 2-for-3 and scored twice.

The Express won 4-3 on Friday, but Profar then didn't play. He played again on Saturday and went 1-for-3 in a 9-3 victory, while scoring two runs.

On Sunday, in a 10-4 win against Iowa, Profar was 1-for-4 with a walk and scored once.

At AutoZone Park in Memphis, J.C. Sulbaran had a fine outing as starting pitcher for Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A, St. Louis Cardinals) in its second home game against Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Milwaukee Brewers). The Redbirds opened their season on Thursday with a 4-3 loss.

On Friday, Sulbaran started the second game for the Redbirds. The righthander struckout four batters in five innings and gave up only two basehits. Sulbaran left the mound with a 2-1 lead and he became the winning pitcher as his relievers held the Sky Sox scoreless in the remainder of the game. The Redbirds won 2-1, then added a 4-0 shutout-victory in Saturday.

At First Tennessee Park in Nashville, Shawn Zarraga opened the season in Triple-A with the Oklahoma City Dodgers (Los Angeles Dodgers). Zarraga didn't play in the opening game at Nashville Sounds (Oakland A's) on Thursday, which was won by the Dodgers with a 5-0 score. The next day, he entered the game as new first baseman for the Dodgers in the tenth inning and didn't got an at bat. The Dodgers lost 2-1 in the eleventh inning on a walk-off triple by Renato Nunez.

On Saturday, Zarraga caught the entire game for the Dodgers and was 0-for-3 with a walk in a 2-1 victory. The Dodgers won 3-1 on Sunday against Nashville, but Zarraga didn't play in that game.

Loek van Mil is a member of the pitching-staff of the Rochester Red Wings (Triple-A, Minnesota Twins). At PNC Field in Moosic, the Red Wings opened the season on Thursday at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (New York Yankees). The game was halted in the fourth inning due to weather conditions, then completed on Friday, resulting in a 3-0 win for the Red Wings.

This was followed by the regular scheduled game, which ended in a 7-2 loss for Rochester. With Rochester leading 2-1 in the sixth inning, starting pitcher Pat Dean gave up a lead-off double to Rob Refsnyder, then a single to Slade Heathcott. Hereafter, Dean was relieved by Loek van Mil. The first batter he faced grounded out, then an intentional walk loaded the bases. Van Mil was unable to keep the minimal lead intact, as he gave up a 2-run single to Eddy Rodriguez. With two outs, a double by Jonathan Diaz (one-run) and single by Ben Gamel (2-run) brought in three more runs and made it a 6-2 score in favor of the RailRiders. When next batter Aaron Judge also singled, Van Mil was replaced. Dan Runlzer took over, but threw a wild pitch that led to another run, which was also credited to Van Mil. The Dutch righthander also was credited with a Blown Save.

On Saturday, the game rained out.

Catcher Spencer Kieboom has opened his season in Double-A with the Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals). He was the catcher in the opening game on Thursday at Altoon Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates).

At Peoples Natural Gas Field in Altoona, the Senators won 10-6 and Kieboom was 3-for-5, including a double. He scored once and batted in three runs. He singled in the first run of the season for the Senators in the second inning. With the Senators leading 5-4, the team decided the game with a 4-run rally in the eighth inning. In this at bat, Kieboom started the rally with an RBI-double, then later scored himself on a following double by Adrian Sanchez. In the ninth, Kieboom added another runscoring single.

On Friday, Harrisburg won 10-4. Kieboom again was the catcher and this time, he was 1-for-3 and again batted in a run.

However, in the top of the first inning, Daal had to leave the game, which was played in Trustmark Park in Pearl. Beau Amaral led off with a walk, then Daal was the next batter in what was to be his first-ever at bat on the Double-A level. The 22-year old Daal was hit by a pitch on his helmet from starting pitcher Lucas Sims and that led to him being replaced by a pinch-runner. The next day, Daal was placed on the 7-day disabled list. He was replaced on the roster by Ray Chang, who was promoted from Billings Mustangs (Rookie League).

The next day, Mississippi won 2-0. Albies was 3-for-4 for the Braves and scored the first run. In the sixth inning, Albies led off with a single, then scored on a following triple by Matt Lipka, who scored himself when Dustin Peterson followed with a double.
