Pirates wins in tenth inning after trailing against Pioniers
Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates turned another deficit into a victory on Saturday (August 13) in its second Play-Off game against Vaessen Pioniers. Amsterdam trailed twice, then came alongside in the eighth inning and went on to win 4-3 in ten innings.

On Friday, Amsterdam Pirates trailed 5-4 in the eighth inning, then won 8-5 in the opener.

Both teams collected only six basehits today, but Gilmer Lampe produced two important ones for the Amsterdam-squad. In the fifth inning, he hit a 2-run double that gave Pirates a 2-1 lead and in the tenth inning, he hit a walk-off single that gave his team the win. Lampe hit three of the Amsterdam-basehits.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. Vaessen Pioniers
Starting pitchers Robin Schel (Pirates) and Chris Pfau (Pioniers), both lefthanders, held their opponent scoreless in the first three innings. In those innings, Schel retired all nine batters he faced. Amsterdam was more productive, but was unable to score. In the first at bat, Nick Urbanus led off with a bunt-single, then Gilmer Lampe walked with one out. The two moved on a passed ball, but then stranded on second and third base. In the second inning, Danny Rombley led off with a double, but was left behind.

Pioniers then opened the score in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Zerzinho Croes was awarded first base on catcher's interference and he then moved into scoring position when Mervin Gario singled. Next batter Quintin De Cuba also singled and that gave Pioniers an 1-0 lead. With runners on first and second base, Schel closed the inning with two strikeouts.

Amsterdam then stranded a runner on third base in its fourth at bat, as did Pioniers in the top of the fifth. But in the bottom of the fifth, Amsterdam erased the early deficit by scoring twice. Rashid Gerard walked and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Max Clarijs, then Nick Urbanus also walked. With two outs, both scored when Gilmer Lampe delivered a 2-run double that made it 2-1. The inning ended when Lampe was caught stealing at third base.

The Amsterdam-lead was shortlived, as Pioniers answered with two runs in the top of the sixth. Both runs again were unearned, as an error was involved. Zerzinho Croes led off with a walk, then an error was made on a possible double play-grounder by Mervin Gario. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Quintin De Cuba also walked. That led to a pitching change. Pim Walsma took over and began with a strikeout, but then walked Brian Raap, which led to the tying run. Hereafter, a sacrfice fly by Austin Weymouth gave Pioniers a 3-2 lead. With runners on first and second base, Max Draijer singled. The two runners advanced, but De Cuba tried to score and was eliminated at the plate on a nice throw from leftfielder Gilmer Lampe to end the inning.

Daan Hendrix took over the Pirates-pitching in the sixth. The righthander gave up an one-out single to Christopher Garia. He stole second base, while Hendrix struckout Zerzinho Croes. Garia then also stole third base, but stranded, as Hendrix closed the inning by also striking out Mervin Gario. Hendrix retired the side in the eighth, adding two more strikeouts.

Amsterdam was retired in order by Chris Pfau in the sixth and seventh inning, but then came alongside in the eighth. With two outs, Gilmer Lampe singled, then scored when Kenny Berkenbosch followed with a triple.

A bold move was executed in the top of the ninth inning by Amsterdam Head Coach Charles Urbanus. Pinch-hitter Shurman Marlin led off for Pioniers with a single and his pinch-runner Stephen Henson advanced on a wild pitch. Hendrix then struckout both Max Draijer and Brennan Nijhof. While Henson (at second base) represented the winning run, there were already two outs when Christopher Garia entered the batter's box. Instead of pitching to the former pro, he was walked intentionally. This of course set up a force play, but also could have turned the inning in favor of Pioniers, which was shown moments later. With runners on first and second base, Tom de Blok was brought in as new pitcher. He saw the two runners execute a double-steal. But they stranded at second and third base, as the inning ended when Zerzinho Croes flied out.

Amsterdam left a runner on first base in its ninth at bat and so, the game went into extra innings.

In the top of the tenth inning, the Amsterdam-defense played a major role. Christopher Garia (2nd base) and Zerzinho Croes (1st base) were the tie-break runners for Pioniers. A costly out then followed, as Garia was eliminated in a rundown after a pick-off by De Blok. Next batter Mervin Gario then grounded into a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, closer Sedley Karel took over for Chris Pfau. Tie-break runners Koen Nooij (pinch-runner, 2nd base) and Max Clarijs (1st base) advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Urbanus. A force play was then created by walking Michael Duursma intentionally to load the bases. Hereafter, Gilmer Lampe went after the first pitch he saw and then drilled the ball into right-centerfield for a walk-off single that gave Pirates 4-3 victory. And with that, Lampe accounted for all four Amsterdam-runs. He batted in three and scored one.
