Twins wins second Play-Down game in eleven innings

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - De Glaskoning Twins registered its second victory in the Play-Downs on Saturday (August 13), but needed two extra innings to do so. Twins trailed 1-0 in the first inning against Pickles UVV, came alongside and went on to win 3-2 in eleven innings. Twins won 6-1 in the opener on Friday-evening.

Trailing 1-0, Twins came alongside in the fifth inning. UVV, which outhit Twins 11-9, re-took the lead in the top of the eleventh inning. But in the bottom of the eleventh, Twins answered with two runs to win the game.

De Glaskoning Twins vs. Pickles UVV
Japanese righthander Keiji Uezono (Twins) and Jurjen van Zijl (UVV) didn't gave way much during their stay on the mound. Van Zijl gave up only five basehits in 7 1/3 inning, while Uezono gave up eleven, but he threw in ten complete innings. Both gave up one run.

It was UVV that opened the score in the first ining. Rick Kuipers led off the game with a single, then scored all the way from first base on an one-out single by Tony Enos.

Hereafter, UVV was held scoreless until the eleventh inning, despite getting several runners in scoring position.

In the second inning, Berend Ruben led off with a double, but was then eliminated in a rundown on a following bunt back to the pitcher by Norbert Jongerius. Hereafter, Sven Jongejans followed with a single, but was forced out moment later on a grounder by Dennis Ribbens. With Jongerius on third base, Ribbens took off for second base, but then Jongerius was eliminated in a rundown between third and the plate to end the inning.

In the third, UVV got another lead-off hitter on base when Rick Kuipers singled again, but he was caught stealing moments later. Jamie Verheyleweghen then also singled, but was left behind.

Keiji Uezono retired the side in the fourth and fifth inning, then saw his teammates tie the score in the bottom of the fifth.

For Twins, Denzel Bryson had led off the first inning with a walk, but he was caught stealing with two outs. In the second, Christopher Ge doubled with two outs, but stranded.

Twins got a chance to do something back in the bottom of the fourth inning when it got the bases loaded. With one out, Berry van Donselaar singled and Anthony Vrolijk walked. They moved on a sac-bunt by Christopher Ge, then the bases got loaded when Bob van der Meer walked. However, the three runners were left behind when Jurjen van Zijl closed the at bat with a strikeout.

Twins then did score in the fifth to come alongside. With one out, Denzel Bryson was hit by a pitch and avdanced on a grounder. He then scored the tying run on a double by Jeffrey Arends, who stranded himself on second base.

Both teams got a scoring opportunity again in the seventh inning. For UVV, Steven van Reem led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Jordan Illis, who advanced on a sacrifice bunt. But hereafter, Illis was eliminated in a rundown between second and third base on a comeback-grounder by Norbert Jongerius. Next batter Sven Jongejans was hit by a pitch, then UVV stranded two runners. For Twins, Nick Peels reached on an error with one out and stole second base, then was left behind.

In the bottom of the eighth, Twins got two baserunners with one out, but failed to score. With one out, Berry van Donselaar singled and Anthony Vrolijk walked. Stijn Janssens then was inserted as pinch-runner for Van Donselaar, while Kevin van Veen took over the pitching for Jurjen van Zijl. Van Veen saw Christopher Ge flyout, but hereafter, Bob van der Meer grounded towards short. There, pinch-runner Janssens was hit by the batted ball and was ruled out. Van der Meer was credited with a basehit, but it also ended the inning.

In the ninth inning, both teams left a runner in scoring position and with that, the game went into extra innings.

In the top of the tenth inning, UVV got the bases loaded when tie-break runners Norbert Jongerius (2nd base) and Sven Jongejans (1st base) advanced on a bunt-single by Sergino Martis. Jongerius and Jongejanse were then both forced out at the plate on consecutive force play-grounders by respectively Rick Kuipers and Jamie Verheyleweghen. The bases were left loaded when a flyout ended the inning.

In the bottom of the tenth, it was Twins that left three runners behind. Twins got the bases loaded with one out when tie-break runners Denzel Bryson (2nd base) and Bart Hanegraaff (1st base) moved when Stijn Janssens was hit by a pitch. Hereafter, a squeeze-attempt failed, as Anthony Vrolijk struckout when a bunt on a 2-strike-count went foul. A grounder then ended the inning.

In the top of the eleventh, UVV took a 2-1 lead off of Ben Van Nuffel, who took over the pitching for Keiji Uezono. First, tie-break runners Jamie Verheyleweghen (2nd base) and Tony Enos (1st base) then moved on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Bazuin. Hereafter, Verheyleweghen scored when he was awarded the plate on a balk, but Enos would strand at third base.

Twins then decided the game moments later. With Anthony Vrolijk on second base and Christopher Ge on first base, the first was forced out on third base on a grounder by Bob van der Meer. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Bart Janssen singled. Next batter Nick Peels also singled to bring in Ge and make it a tie score again (2-2). Moments later, it was celebration time for Twins, as Van der Meer scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Denzel Bryson.
