CARTAGENA / MONTERÍA (Colombia) - Netherlands professional player Chadwick Tromp is playing this winter in the Liga Colombiana de Béisbol Profesional (LCBP). A few days ago, Aruba-born Tromp began the new Colombian season with Indios Claro de Cartagena. Until last season, this team, which was founded in 1996, was known as Tigres de Cartagena.

In September, the catcher made his debut in the Netherlands National Baseball Team during the European Championship, which was held in the Netherlands. With the Orange squad, Tromp captured the European title.

Former Major League-pitcher Calvin Maduro also is active in the professional Colombian league. Last month, Maduro, who also comes from Aruba, was named Pitching Coach of Leones Comfacor de Montería. That team will be led by new Manager Gustavo Bencid Jr. from Venezuela. Both Maduro and Bencid (who is an international scout) work for the Baltimore Orioles-organization, with whom Leones came to a working agreement.

The new season in the LCBP opened on November 4. The four teams in the league are all located in the northern part of Colombia. The teams play in four neighbouring departments, Atlántico, Bolívar, Sucre and Córdoba.

On Opening Day, Maduro's team Leones Comfacor de Monteriá won 2-0 against Toros Coca-Cola de Sincelejo at home in Estadio 18 de Junio in Montería.

On the same day, at Estadio Once de Noviembre in Cartagena, Indios Claro de Cartagena, the team of Tromp, played a 2-2 tie at home against reigning champion Caimanes Olímpica de Lorica. That game was halted after twelve complete innings, as the curfew of midnight has reached. According to league-rules, no new inning may be started after midnight.

In the opening game, Chadwick Tromp was the designated hitter for Indios and was 0-for-4. In the next game, which was played four days later, Indios lost 4-1 to Leones. In that game, the Indios outhit the Leones 8-6. Tromp, who was the catcher, connected for two of the Indios-basehits and batted in the lone run for his team.

On Friday, Indios won 8-2 against Toros. Indios collected 12 basehits and Tromp was 1-for-4. Tromp, who was the starting catcher, scored one of the runs. In Saturday's game, the Indios played its second game against Toros. Tromp, who was the DH, had a productive game, as he was 2-for-4 and scored once. On Sunday, Indios trailed 2-0 against Toros, then rallied for four runs in the top of the third inning, but the game was then stopped due to rain.

The Indios are currently in third place with a 2-2 record. Leones leads the league with five wins and three losses, followed by Caimanes (3-2). Toros is in last place with a 2-5 record.
