Schoop homers; two hits for Albies, Zarraga

FORT MYERS / KISSIMMEE / SARASOTA / TAMPA, Florida / PHOENIX, Arizona (USA) - On Wednesday (March 16), five Dutch professionals got into action in Major League Spring Training-games.

Ozzie Albies and Shawn Zarraga both registered two basehits, playing respectively for the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jonathan Schoop hit a 3-run homerun for the Baltimore Orioles.

At Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, the Baltimore Orioles won 9-3 vs. Pittsburgh Pirates after trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning.

Jonathan Schoop started at second base for the Orioles and was 1-for-3, which was a homerun, scored once and had three runs batted in.

Schoop struckout in the third inning, but then struck in the fifth. With the Orioles trailing 3-0, Hyun-Soo Kim and J.J. Hardy both singled off of new pitcher Jared Hughes. Hereafter, Schoop homered to make it a 3-3 score.

Schoop grounded out in the sixth, then was replaced in the top of the seventh.



At Champion Stadium at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex @ Walt Disney World Resort in Kissimmee, the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals played an 8-8 tie in a 9-inning game.

Ozzie Albies played the entire game at second base for the home-playing Braves and was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.

Albies struckout in the first inning, but then led off the fourth inning with a single. He then stole second base with one out and scored the first Atlanta-run on a double by Hector Olivera. In the inning, the Braves scored three more runs to take a 4-3 lead.

This scenario repeated itself from the fifth ining on. In the fifth, Albies struckout for the second time, but he then led off the eighth with a single. This time, he moved on a single by Dansby Swanson and scored on a single by Dustin Peterson. But it again was the first run of a 4-run rally, that gave the Braves an 8-7 lead. The Cards then tied the score in the ninth.



At George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, the New York Yankees won 2-1 vs. the Toronto Blue Jays.

Didi Gregorius started at short for the Yankees and was 0-for-2.

He grounded out in the second and fifth inning, then as replaced in the top of the seventh.



At Hammond Stadium @ CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, the Minnesota Twins won 9-4 vs. the Boston Red Sox.

Xander Bogaerts was the starting short stop for the Red Sox and was 0-for-2 with a walk.

Bogaerts struckout in the first inning. With Dustin Pedroia (single) on first base and one out, Bogaerts walked in the fourth inning. The bases got loaded when Hanley Ramirez also singled, but then the inning ended when Pablo Sandoval grounded into a double play.

In the sixth, Bogaerts grounded out, then was replaced in the bottom of the sixth.



At Camelback Ranch-Glendale in Phoenix, the Los Angeles Dodgers won 7-3 vs. the Colorado Rockies.

Shawn Zarraga entered the game in the top of the fifth inning as new catcher for the Dodgers and was 2-for-2, scored a run and batted in one.

In the bottom of the sixth, with the Dodgers trailing 3-2, Chase Utley led off with a ground-rule double, then scored the tying run when Zarraga singled with one out. Zarraga would advanced on a wild pitch, but then was left behind.

In the eighth inning, with one out, Zarraga singled again, then moved when Trayce Thompson walked with two outs. Zarraga then scored an insurance run on a single by Elian Herrera, making it 5-3 for the Dodgers.
