Pickles UVV vs. HCAW
Kevin van Veen, who also started last Sunday's game for UVV, again was the starting pitcher tonight for the struggling team.
The righthander started well, as he retired the side in both the first and second inning.
But he then gave up two runs in the third at bat of HCAW.
With one out, Jelle Blaauw singled, then Levine Gabriëls was hit by a pitch.
After an infield-fly accounted for the second out, Roelie Henrique delivered a runscoring single.
That brought Gabriëls to third base and he then scored when Henrique stole second base to make it 2-0.
After being retired in order again in the fourth, HCAW rallied for three runs with two outs in the fifth.
Marciano Philippi led off with a single, then Levine Gabriëls was hit by a pitch for the second time with one out.
With two outs, Roelie Henrique produced another runscoring single and Rossini Frolijk followed with a 2-run double to lift the lead to 5-0.
Another scoreless inning followed for HCAW in the sixth, but the Bussum-squad then added four unearned runs on three hits in the seventh.
Levine Gabriëls led off and he was hit by a pitch in his third consecutive at bat, which is very rare.
What makes it more unique is that Mervin Gario of Vaessen Pioniers also was hit three times tonight in the game against De Glaskoning Twins.
Gabriëls then reached second base safely when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Boyd Tuhumury and the bases got loaded via a bunt-single by Roelie Henrique.
With one out, a run was scored on a single by Vince Rooi.
With two outs, Kevin Weijgertse added a 2-run single, then Marciano Philippi walked.
That marked the end for Kevin van Veen.
With the bases still loaded, he was replaced by Thijs Steenwijk, but he walked pinch-hitter Gianni Frolijk, which brought in another run and made it a 9-0 score.
Three runners were left behind when a flyout ended the at bat.
UVV registered only six basehits.
In the bottom of the first inning, Julian Rip led off for UVV with a single, but a double play followed.
After stranding a runner on second base in the second inning, HCAW-starter Ian Delemarre retired the side in the third.
UVV left a runner on first base in the fourth, then got its second runner in scoring position in the fifth.
With two outs, Sergino Martis walked and moved on a single by Sven Jongejans, but was then eliminated on second base by a pick-off.
Delemarre retired the side again in the sixth, but in the seventh, the righthander gave up one-out singles to Mike Bazuin and pinch-hitter Berend Ruben.
But a strikeout and line out ended the inning.
In the eighth, which was played in sometimes heavy rain, HCAW had another scoreless inning after a runscoring inning (stranding two runners).
Giovanni Tensen then took over for Delemarre in the bottom of the eighth.
He saw Tijmen Takke reach on an error with one out, but closed with two strikeouts.
Due to rainy weather conditions, there was a brief meeting between the umpires and coaches before the start of the ninth inning, but it was decided to start the final at bat.
In the top of the ninth, HCAW added two runs off of new pitcher Gilian van Lith, thanks to a force play-grounder by Boyd Tuhumury and a double by Roelie Henrique.
In the bottom of the ninth, Tim Niekerk became the new pitcher for HCAW.
He gave up a lead-off single to Omar Williams, which was lost in the rain by rightfielder Marciano Philippi.
That was the signal for the umpires to stop the game.
Moments later, the game was halted definitively.
