Neptunus defeats Aruban champion
Nederlands

SANTA ROSA (Curaçao) - Reigning champion Curaçao Neptunus played the first game of its trip to Curaçao on Thursday-evening (March 17) and faced Aruban champion Marlboro Red Machine. At Tio Daou Ballpark in Santa Rosa, Neptunus won 7-2 vs. Red Machine, which captured its 23rd title last November.

Neptunus traveled to Curaçao on Tuesday, as part of its preparations for the upcoming season. The trip is made possible thanks to Neptunus' main sponsor Fundashon Bon Intenshon.

The Rotterdam-squad will play three exhibition games, which all will last seven innings. In the weekend, Neptunus meets Santo Rosa Indians on Saturday and Santa Maria Pirates on Sunday. Both teams come from Curaçao with Santa Maria being the champion.

As the champions of Aruba, Curaçao and the Netherlands participate, the series of games is dubbed Dutch Kingdom Classic Championship. And this might be the first edition of a new tradition.

The regular season opens on Thursday, April 14.

Marlboro Red Machine vs. Curaçao Neptunus
Neptunus initially faced an 1-0 deficit after two innings, but then scored twice in the top of the third inning to turn the game its way from there.

Diegomar Markwell started for Neptunus. In the second inning, the lefthander hit a batter with a pitch, who then scored on a double by Halley to give the Aruban squad an early lead.

Neptunus answered with two runs in the third at bat off of starter Luis Figuera. First, Dwayne Kemp scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Raily Legito. Shortly thereafter, Benjamin Dille put Neptunus ahead by scoring on a hit by Gianison Boekhoudt.

Neptunus added two runs in the fourth inning. Dashenko Ricardo, who played in his first game for Neptunus, led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Urving Kemp. In the off-season, Ricardo came to Neptunus after having played for Kinheim. Later in the at bat, Rien Vernooij scored the next run for Neptunus on a single by Benjamin Dille.

Neptunus took more distance in the sixth inning. Shaldimar Daantji then doubled and scored when Dille delivered his third basehit.

Red Machine then scored its second run in the bottom of the sixth inning off of Berry van Driel, the third Neptunus-pitcher in the game. Steven van Groningen had taken over for Markwell in the fifth. Van Driel gave up a double and that would lead to the second Aruban run.

In the top of the seventh inning, Neptunus again scored two runs. Gianison Boekhoudt doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dashenko Ricardo. Later in the at bat, Daniel Fernandes scored the next run on a hit by Dwayne Kemp. Fernandes had taken over shortly before in rightfield for Diaz. Last season, Fernandes played for Vaessen Pioniers and this also was his first game of the season, as he didn't play last weekend due to the flu.

Bayron Cornelisse threw the seventh inning for Neptunus and didn't gave up more runs.

The games (and practices) are being done under excellent weather conditions, as it currently around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). And that's much better than back home, where it is still very cold.
