Pioniers shuts out Twins in seven innings
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - Vaessen Pioniers shutout De Glaskoning Twins 11-0 in seven innings on Saturday (June 18) to win its eleventh consecutive game. For Twins, this was its sixth loss in a row.

Both teams meet each other again in Oosterhout on Sunday to conclude their series. In the season's format, a team plays at home on Thursday-evening and on Saturday-afternoon, then the third game is played at the opponent's site on Sunday. This initially also was the situation for this series in the originally published game schedule. However, the complex of Pioniers is used this weekend for the Dutch Little League Finals in three age-categories (Senior League, Junior League, Little League). It was then decided somewhere in April to swap the Thursday and Sunday-games of the Pioniers vs. Twins series. With that, Pioniers played at home on Thursday, then plays twice in Oosterhout in the weekend.

As the light-installation on the home site of Twins is not sufficient enough for evening games, the team plays its home games on Thursday-evening at the site of The Hawks in Dordrecht. So far, DSS (April 28), L&D Amsterdam Pirates (May 12) and HCAW (May 19) have traveled to Dordrecht for their away-game against Twins. By swapping the games, Pioniers now will its orginal Thursday-evening away-game on Sunday in Oosterhout. Curaçao Neptunus played its away-game against Twins on Thursday, April 14 in its home stadium in Rotterdam. In the remainder of the regular season, there are two more Thursday-games scheduled to be played in Dordrecht when Twins hosts Pickles UVV (June 30) and Kinheim (August 4).

Pioniers collected 11 basehits today, including homeruns by Quintin De Cuba in the second and Shurman Marlin in the fourth inning. Marlin's homerun hightlighted the game, as it was a grand slam homerun. He batted in six runs today and was responsible for seven of the ten runs his team scored.

Lefthander Chris Pfau went the distance for Pioniers and gave up only three hits in seven innings.

The game was interrupted twice due to weather conditions in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Vaessen Pioniers vs. De Glaskoning Twins
Pioniers opened the score early with three runs in the top of the second inning, then added seven runs in the next two at bats, but was held scoreless in the three following innings. However, the 10-run difference was enough to end the game via the mercy-rule after seven complete innings.

Pionies was retired in order in the first inning by veteran righthander Elton Koeiman, who then gave up three runs in the next at bat. He then gave up a lead-off homerun to Quintin De Cuba, which opened the score. Hereafter, Kevin Dirksen doubled and scored on a following single by Shurman Marlin. With two outs, Marlin advanced on a wild pitch, moved on a single by Shavently Profar and scored on a single by Zerzinho Croes to make it 3-0.

Pioniers added a run in the third, but then also left three runners behind. Brian Raap led off with a single, then the bases got loaded when Quintin De Cuba walked and Kevin Dirksen singled. Raap then scored on a sacrifice fly by Shurman Marlin. The bases were re-loaded when Mark Smit singled and that led to a pitching change, as Floris Timmer took over for Koeiman. He got a flyout, then ended the inning with a called strikeout, meaning three runners were left behind.

Pioniers staged a 6-run rally in the top of the fourth inning to take a comfortable 10-0 lead. The Hoofddorp-squad got the bases loaded the easy way, as Zerzinho Croes and Mervin Gario both walked and Brian Raap was hit by a pitch. A run was then scored when next batter Quintin De Cuba also walked. That was followed by a new pitching change. With the bases loaded, Ben Van Nuffel took over and he saw a run being scored when Kevin Dirksen reached on an error. Hereafter, Shurman Marlin made good contact, as he drilled the ball over the rightfield-fence for a grand slam homerun that increased the lead to 10-0. There were still no outs when next batter Mark Smit reached on an error, but hereafter, three batters were retired in order.

Lefthander Chris Pfau had a good outing on the mound for Pioniers and gave up only three basehits. Two of them came in the third inning. With two outs, Jarreau Martina and Bart Hanegraaff singled and advanced on a wild pitch, but the American closed with a strikeout.

Pfau retired the side in the fourth and fifth inning, then gave up the third Twins-basehit in the bottom of the sixth after a 19-minute rain-delay. With one out, Bart Hanegraaff then walked and Jeffrey Arends singled. A brief 5-minute delay then followed for to some field-maintenance, but hereafter, Pfau retired the next two batters.

In the bottom of the seventh, he retired the side again to end the game.
