HCAW wins against Twins
Nederlands

DORDRECHT (Neth.) - HCAW led 10-1 after six innings against De Glaskoning Twins on Thursday-evening (May 19), but was unable to end the game with a mercy-rule run-difference. Instead, the suspense rose in the final three at bats, as Twins scored eight runs and in the end lost only 12-9.

Both teams collected 12 basehits, but there were also seven defensive errors, four by HCAW, three by Twins. Vince Rooi had three basehits for HCAW and also batted in three. Jeffrey Arends homered for Twins.

Twins, which had not decided on its starting rotation for this series yet, had a surprise starting pitcher tonight. Most series-openers were started by Australian Justin Erasmus, but he made his last start for the team last weekend, before transfering to play in Germany. Last weeks opener was started by Ben Van Nuffel. Tonight, Elton Koeiman started for Twins after also having started last Sunday's game. With that, the 43-year old veteran returned to the mound on only four days of rest. But there was more, as Koeiman was handed a 2-game suspension on Wednesday-evening, which was the result of his ejection a few weeks ago. With that, he wouldn't be eligible to pitch tonight and on Saturday. However, earlier in the day, Twins appealed Koeiman's suspension and with that, he became eligible to pitch tonight. Twins did play without catcher Stijn Janssens, who was handed an one-game suspension after he had been ejected in another game.

HCAW also had changed its pitching rotation. Instead of Sander Helmendach or Kaj Timmermans, HCAW had announced that Ian Delemarre was to be the starter tonight and he indeed made his first start of the season for the Bussum-team. Timmermans will start on Saturday, while Helmendach has no starting assignment in this series.

De Glaskoning Twins vs. HCAW
HCAW rallied for five runs in the third inning off Elton Koeiman. The righthander gave up a lead-off double to Boyd Tuhumury, then Roelie Henrique followed with a bunt-single and Marciano Philippi added a runscoring single that opened the score. An error on a force play-grounder by Vince Rooi then loaded the bases and Kevin Weijgertse then delivered a 2-run single. Hereafter, the bases were re-loaded when Rossini Frolijk walked, then Kevin Nieveld also connected for a 2-run single to make it 5-0. A strikeout and double play then ended the inning, but HCAW had taken a comfortable lead.

Twins got one run back in the bottom of the third. With one out, Bob van der Meer singled, moved to third base when Bart Janssen reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

In the next three innings, HCAW scored five more runs to increase its lead to 10-1.

In the fourth, Roelie Henrique walked with one out and scored on a 2-out single by Vince Rooi.

HCAW then scored twice in both the fifth and sixth inning. In the fifth, Rossini Frolijk led off with a walk and Kevin Nieveld singled, then both scored on a double by Levine Gabriëls. Hereafter, Ben Van Nuffel took over for Elton Koeiman and retired the next three batters.

In the sixth, HCAW scored its next two runs. Marciano Philippi led off with a walk and Vince Rooi singled, then the bases got loaded when Rossini Frolijk also walked. A sacrifice fly by Kevin Nieveld brought in the first run, then a walk for Levine Gabriëls loaded the bases again. Another walk for pinch-hitter Jelle Blaauw led to the next run, but hereafter, HCAW left the bases loaded.

Twins then started to come back from the seventh inning on. In this at bat, they scored three runs off of Marco Schel, who took over for Ian Delemarre. He first walked Berry van Donselaar and Christopher Ge. With one out, Bob van der Meer singled to bring in a run, but this also was followed by an outfield-error, which led to another run. With two outs, Bart Hanegraaff singled to make it a 10-4 score. Hereafter, Gijs van Els took over the HCAW-pitching, who closed the at bat with a strikeout.

Twins added a run in the eighth when Berry van Donselaar doubled with one out and later scored on a 2-out single by Bob van der Meer.

In the top of the ninth, HCAW added two insurance runs on a 2-run triple by Vince Rooi. These runs were much needed, as Twins rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth off of new pitcher Giovanni Tensen. Jarreau Martina led off with a walk and scored on a double by pinch-hitter Mick Molenaar, who himself was eliminated at third base. Next batter Adrian Anthony singled, then Jeffrey Arends homered. Hereafter, then bases got loaded when Berry van Donselaar, Christopher Ge and Shurty Tremus (bunt) all singled. A sacrifice fly by Bob van der Meer then narrowed the deficit to 12-9. Two runners then stranded when a flyout ended the game.
