Neptunus reaches Play-Offs with big win against UVV
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus trailed 1-0 after four innings on Thursday-evening (May 19) against Pickles UVV, but then decided the game by scoring five runs in the fifth inning. Neptunus went on to win 11-1 to become the second team to secure itself of a spot in the Play-Offs, as it will finish in either first or second place in the first half of the season. Eight minutes earlier, L&D Amsterdam Pirates had won its game against Kinheim to become the first team to reach the Play-Offs. Starting next Thursday, Amsterdam and Neptunus will meet in a 3-game series to decide first and second place.

The top-two teams of both the first and second half will qualify for the Play-Offs.

In the remainder of the first half Kinheim can end up in a tie with Neptunus, but in that case, the head-to-head results of the games played between them are in favor of the Rotterdam-squad. Neptunus won two of the three games played, while the third one ended in a tie.

Today (May 19) is the earliest date that a team qualifies for the Play-Offs and the first time two teams qualify on the same day since the introduction of the new format two years ago. In 2014, Neptunus was the first team to qualify in June 1, then Pioniers qualified two days later. Last year, Neptunus qualified on May 30, then Amsterdam Pirates qualified on June 16.

UVV opened the score in the second inning, but the Neptunus scored five runs in the fifth and and added another run in the sixth. Neptunus made it a bigger score by adding five more runs in the ninth at bat.

Three pitchers held UVV to only one basehit. UVV reached base only four times and was held off the bases in the last five innings when the game turned lopsided.

Just as in the previous 3-game series, Neptunus will be without veteran Raily Legito, who at the moment is on Saint Martin for the project 'Alleen Jij Bepaalt' ('Only You Decides'). Legito also will be on other Antillian islands, including Curaçao and Bonaire during his two-week stay there for the government-funded project.

UVV has to do without short stop Dennis Ribbens, first baseman Jamie Verheyleweghen and centerfielder Julian Rip, who are all injured.

Lefthander Diegomar Markwell held UVV to only one basehit, but that also led to an 1-0 deficit in the second inning. Markwell made a great defensive play in the first inning when he jumped up to field a comeback-grounder by lead-off hitter Rick Kuipers, but he gave up a run in the second at bat. With one out, Mike Bazuin hit a triple in left-centerfield, then scored on a wild pitch. The triple by Bazuin would be the lone one hit tonight by the home team.

After giving up the triple, Markwell would allow only one more batter to reach base in the next five innings. After the triple, Markwell retired 17 of the next 18 batters. With two outs in the fourth, he walked Steven van Reem but then retired the next ten consecutive batters.

In the eighth inning, Kevin Kelly took over and struckout the side. Loek van Mil then pitched the ninth and also retired the side to complete the 'combined one-hitter'. The last sixteen batters of UVV were retired in order.

Neptunus was held scoreless in its first four innings by lefthander Gillian van Lith, who made his first start of the season. So far, Timo van Ancum had started the openers of a 3-game series for UVV.

Van Lith did fine initially. He retired the side in the first inning and was supported with a double play in the second. In the third, he gave up a lead-off single to Shaldimar Daantji and walked Urving Kemp, but held Neptunus scoreless. Van Lith then retired the side again in the fourth, but then ran into problems in the fifth, while UVV's bullpen was empty.

In the fifth, Van Lith walked Rien Vernooij and he then made a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Steven Wharwood. Next, Van Lith also made a throwing error during a pick-off attempt at second base and he then gave up a 2-run triple to Shaldimar Daantji that turned the game around. Moments later, Daantji scored on a sacrifice fly by Urving Kemp. The bases then got loaded when Dwayne Kemp singled and both Benjamin Dille and Christian Diaz walked. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Gianison Boekhoudt then made it a 5-1 score.

In the sixth, Neptunus added a run off of new pitcher José Moreno. With one out, Steven Wharwood walked. He then stole second base in a pick-off situation, which was followed by a throwing error enabling him to reach third base. Wharwoord then scored on a grounder by Shaldimar Daantji.

After leaving the bases loaded in the seventh inning (off of Kevin van Veen) and stranding two runners in the eighth (off of Thijs Steenwijk), Neptunus rallied for five runs in the ninth. Norbert Jongerius then became UVV's fifth pitcher of the evening and got the bases loaded quickly. He walked Gianison Boekhoudt, then gave up singles to Dashenko Ricardo and Rien Vernooij. Before delivering his single, Ricardo had walked and flied out three times, but now, he extended his hitting streak to ten games. A walk for Steven Wharwood then led to a run. With two outs, singles by Dwayne Kemp(one-run) and Benjamin Dille (2-run) plus an error lifted the lead to 11-1.
