HCAW wins in extra innings to complete sweep against UVV
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW came from behind twice on Sunday (June 19) to won 4-3 in ten innings against Pickles UVV. With the win, HCAW completed its first 3-game sweep of the season. The last time that HCAW swept a series was in 2014 when it won three games against ADO Lakers.

With the win, HCAW extended its winning streak to five games, while UVV now has lost twelve games in a row.

The win also meant that HCAW moved into fourth place of the Overall Standings, passing Kinheim. HCAW now is in second place of the second half of the regular season. The top-two teams will qualify for the Play-Offs, joining L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Curaçao Neptunus, who reached the final-four in the first half of the regular season. In case these teams again finish in first and second place in the second half, the numbers three and four will qualify.

Trailing 2-0, HCAW scored in the fourth inning, then came alongside in the eighth. In the top of the tenth inning, UVV re-took the lead. But in the bottom of the tenth, HCAW won thanks to a 2-run double by Gianni Frolijk.

HCAW vs. Pickles UVV
HCAW collected only seven basehits in today's game and faced a 2-0 deficit after three innings, but came from behind and won 4-3 in ten innings to complete a sweep against UVV.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Bussum-squad, which is its longest winning streak since it also won five consecutive games during the 2007 season!

In the first three innings, the game appeared to go the way of UVV, which was having an 11-game losing streak before today. However, in the end, the team was left empty-handed again and lost its 12th consecutive game.

UVV was productive in the first two at bats, but then left a total of five runners. In the first, off of starter Jim Ploeger, with one out, Jamie Verheyleweghen reached on an error and Mike Bazuin walked with two outs, but were left behind. In the second inning, UVV got the bases loaded with two outs. First, Dennis Ribbens walked with one out. Hereafter, with two outs, Tijmen Takke walked and Julian Rip reached on an infield-hit. But they all stranded.

UVV then opened the score in the top of the third inning. With one out, Ploeger walked Mike Bazuin, then the lefthander gave up a double to Sergino Martis. A grounder by Norbert Jongerius and a single by Dennis Ribbens then gave UVV a 2-0 lead.

Hereafter, UVV was held scoreless in the remainder of the regular innings, while HCAW came alongside to force extra innings.

American Matt Erickson made his first start today for UVV. A week ago, he wasn't successful when he pitched in relief for UVV, which then failed to hold onto an 11-0 lead and lost 18-17 to DSS. Today, Erickson got the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning. He walked lead-off hitter Marciano Philippi, but then was supported with a double play. Hereafter, Rossini Frolijk singled, then Vince Rooi and Kevin Nieveld also walked, but Erickson closed with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the second, there again was lot traffic on the basepaths. With two outs, Erickson walked Julian Goins, Marciano Philippi and Roelie Henrique to get the bases loaded again. But Erickson then closed again with a strikeout, meaning HCAW stranded three more runners.

In the bottom of the third, now trailing 2-0, HCAW got into scoring position again. Vince Rooi led off with a walk and Kevin Nieveld singled, but hereafter, a flyout, force out and another flyout followed.

HCAW finally scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but left three runners behind for the third time! With one out, Marciano Philippi and Roelie Henrique both singled and the bases got loaded when Vince Rooi walked with two outs. A run was then scored when Erickson hit Kevin Nieveld with a pitch. Three runners stranded when a pop-fly ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Timo van Ancum took over for Matt Erickson, who had walked eight batters and hit another in the four innings he had pitched. Van Ancum retired the side. He was relieved by José Moreno in the sixth and he also eliminated three consecutive batters in both the sixth and seventh at bat.

In the eighth, HCAW came alongside. Jelle Blaauw led off with a walk, then moved on a grounder and stole third base. Julian Goins followed with a single that made it a 2-2 score. When next batter Marciano Philippi also singled, it led to a new pitching change, as Kevin van Veen took over for UVV. He got two grounders, but the score was tied.

In the top of the ninth, pinch-runner Rick Kuipers (he ran for Tijmen Takke, who walked) stole second base and advanced on an error. But he stranded on third base, as the next two batters were retired by Giovanni Tensen, who had taken over for Ploeger in the previous inning.

HCAW was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth and so, a tie-break followed.

In the top of the tenth, Oscar Meuris became the new pitcher for HCAW. He gave up a lead-off runscoring single to Berend Ruben that brought in tie-break runner Julian Rip to give UVV a renewed lead, 3-2. A sacrifice bunt by Mike Bazuin led to runners on second and third base, then a force play was set up by walking Sergino Martis intentionally. UVV then left three runners behind when a flyout followed.

In the bottom of the tenth, tie-break runners Kevin Nieveld (2nd base) and Kevin Weijgertse (1st base) advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jelle Blaauw. Hereafter, UVV didn't opt to create a force play-situation by walking the next batter. And so, Kevin van Veen pitched to Gianni Frolijk, who then made good contact on his first delivery and hit a 2-run, walk-off, double that gave HCAW a 4-3 victory!
