Neptunus shuts out Kinheim
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus, the league-leader in the Overall Standings, shutout Kinheim 6-0 on Sunday (June 19). With the loss, Kinheim dropped to sixth place in the second half of the season. Only the top-two teams will qualify for the Play-Offs, joining L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Neptunus, who reached the final-four in the first half of the regular season. In case these two teams finish again in first and second place in the second half, the third and fourth best team will qualify.

Neptunus opened the 3-game series against Kinheim on Thursday-evening with a 5-4 loss, then won with the same score in ten innings on Saturday.

Neptunus scored three runs in the fourth and eighth inning. The team collected eleven basehits, including three by Steven Wharwood.

Kenny Van Den Branden threw seven solid innings for Neptunus, giving up only five hits to become the second 7-game winner of this season. The other is teammate Orlando Yntema.

Former professional infielder Ruar Verkerk, who was released recently by the Minnesota Twins, was with Neptunus for the first time today, but he didn't play.

Kinheim vs. Curaçao Neptunus
Starting pitchers Kenny Van Den Branden (Kinheim) and David Bergman (Kinheim) began the game with three scoreless innings, but it was Kinheim that got into scoring position twice.

In the top of the first inning, Kevin Moesquit and Bryan Engelhardt both singled for Kinheim with two outs, but a pop-fly followed. In the second at bat, with one out, Sander Paap and Oliver van der Wijst Severino singled, but hereafter, a line drive by Jochem Koedijk ended in a double play.

Neptunus stranded two runners on first base in the first three innings. With two outs in the first at bat, Raily Legito was hit by a pitch, but a strikeout followed. In the second, also with two outs, Shaldimar Daantji singled, but Bergman then again closed with a strikeout.

It was then Neptunus that opened the score after both teams were retired in order in the third inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Neptunus scored three runs. Lead-off hitter Raily Legito then reached on an error and Gianison Boekhoudt followed with a single. Hereafter, Daniel Fernandes doubled to bring in the first run and a following single by Steven Wharwood accounted for the next two runs to make it 3-0. A double play and force out ended the at bat.

After the second inning, Kinheim didn't get into scoring position anymore in the remainder of the game. The Haarlem-squad was retired in order by Van Den Branden in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh inning. In the fifth, the Belgian righthander gave up a lead-off single to Sander Paap, but the inning ended with a double play.

Neptunus left a runner on second base in the fifth, then saw the Kinheim-defense turn another double play in the sixth. In the seventh, Glenn Wassink took over for Bergman. He walked Dwayne Kemp with one out and Raily Legito with two outs, but they stranded.

Steven van Groningen relieved Van Den Branden in the eighth and retired the side. In the bottom half of the at bat, Neptunus scored its next three runs off of new pitcher Scott Ronnenbergh. With one out, Steven Wharwood and Shaldimar Daantji singled and both scored on a following double by Shadrach Meulens. Urving Kemp also singled to bring Meulens to third base and he then scored on a 2-out single by Stijn van der Meer to make it 6-0.

In the top of the ninth, Van Groningen walked Kevin Moesquit with two outs, but then closed the inning and the game with a strikeout to earn his first save of the season.
