Didi Gregorius and New York Yankees come to terms for new contract
Nederlands

NEW YORK, New York (USA) - Short stop Didi Gregorius and the New York Yankees have come to terms on a new contract, the club announced on Tuesday (January 19). Under the new contract, Gregorius will earn almost 2.5 million dollar this season.

With this, arbitration was avoided. A few days ago, arbitration also was avoided when Jurickson Profar signed a new contract with the Texas Rangers.

By the way, what is arbitration?
There are several possibilities when a player is eligible for arbitration. One of them is when a player has three years of Major League-service (which is the case of Gregorius). When an eligible player cannot come to terms on a new contract with his club, an arbitration hearing follows. When a player and a team do come to an agreement, arbitration is avoided. In short, in the process of arbitration both parties (player, club) submit salary proposals to a third party (arbitrator) who, after a hearing, makes a determination which proposal will be accepted.

Gregorius, who was born in Netherlands-capital Amsterdam, came to the Yankees in a 3-team trade in December 2014. Besides the Yankees, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers also were involved in the deal. Gregorius came to New York from the Diamondbacks. With the Yankees, he became the replacement at short stop for Derek Jeter, who had retired after completion of the 2014 season.

Gregorius, who turns 26 next month, signed his first professional contract in 2007 with the Cincinnati Reds. He made his Major League-debut on September 5, 2012 and went on to play in eight games for the Reds. After the 2012 season, Gregorius was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he became a regular player in 2013, appearing in 103 games. In 2014, he played in 80 games for the Diamondbacks. Last season Didi Gregorius played in 155 games for the Yankees and batted .265 (139-for-525) with 24 doubles, two triples and nine homeruns, while scoring 57 runs and batting in 56, setting career-highs in almost all categories. In October last year, he was a finalist for a Gold Glove Award for American League short stops.

Gregorius grew up in Amsterdam, when his father Didi Gregorius was pitching several years in the Dutch big league for Amsterdam Pirates. In 2009 and 2011, Gregorius played for the Netherlands National Baseball Team during the World Championship. In 2009, the event was held on several European locations. In 2011, he captured the World Championship-title with the Orange squad in Panama, beating Cuba in the final.
