México wins big against Nicaragua to return to World Baseball Classic
Nederlands

MEXICALI (México) - México won 12-1 in 6½ inning against Nicaragua on Sunday-evening (March 20) in the Final of the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Méxicali.

With that, México will again participate in the World Baseball Classic next year.

Earlier in the evening, in the other Qualifying Tournament in Panama City (Panama), host country Panama suffered a 2-1 loss against Colombia which qualified for its first Classic.

The fourth and last tournament will be played in September in Brooklyn (USA). Participating in that event will be Brazil, Great Britain, Israel and Pakistan. In February the first WBC Qualifier took place in Sydney (Australia). There, host Australia won the final against South Africa to become the thirteenth country to qualify for the fourth edition of the World Baseball Classic, which will be held in the Spring of 2017.

Canada, China, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Cuba, Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, South Korea, USA and Venezuela already have qualified, based on their accomplishments during the last Classic in 2013. Just as in 2013, the World Baseball Classic will have the status again as World Championship. Back then, the Dominican Republic won the title and was crowned as World Champion. In 2011, the Netherlands was the final team to capture the World Championship-title in a World Cup Tournament old-style, which then was held in Panama.

Game 6 - México vs. Nicaragua (Final)

In the first inning, México left two runners. Nicaragua then appeared to open the score when it got the bases loaded in the top of the second inning. With one out, Mexican starter Daniel Rodríguez gave up a single to Ofilio Castro, who then stole second base. Hereafter, Renato Morales walked, as did Janior Montes to load the bases. Rodríguez then struckout Dwight Britton and a groundout ended the at bat.

México then struck with six runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Xorge Carrillo reached on an error by short stop Omar Obregón, who injured himself and had to leave the field. Alex Mejia then walked and with two outs, Sebastioan Elizalde was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Esteban Quiroz followed with a 2-run single. A force play was set up by walking Adrian Gonzalez intentionally, but then a walk for Jesus Castillo followed to bring in a run. That led to the departure of starting pitcher Fidencio Flores. He was replaced by Carlos Teller, but he was greeted with a baseclearing, 3-run double by Agustin Murillo, that made it 6-0.

México rallied for five more runs in the fifth. With Agustin Murillo (walk) on base, Leo Heras homered and with two outs, Sebastian Elizalde added an RBI-single and Esteban Quiroz followed with a 2-run homerun to lift the lead to 11-0.

A runscoring single by Humberto Sosa made it 12-0 in the sixth.

Nicaragua then scored its lone run in the seventh inning. Dwight Britton led off with a double, moved on a grounder and scored on a double by Elmer Reyes, but that was to be it.
