Pickles UVV vs. Curaçao Neptunus
Neptunus was retired in order in the top of the first inning, then left two runners behind in the second at bat off of starter Jurjen van Zijl.
The Rotterdam-squad then opened the score in the third inning with four runs, but there was also a protest-sitiuation.
Van Zijl hit lead-off hitter Daniel Fernandes with a pitch, then moved to third base on a single by Dwayne Kemp, who himself ended up on second base.
Hereafter, Benjamin Dille hit the ball into rightfield.
Fernandes took off to score, the throw from rightfielder Norbert Jongerius arrived at catcher Tim Veraghtert, a play at the plate followed and Fernandes was called out by Home Plate Umpire Olav Steijger.
Shortly hereafter, a conference between the umpiring crew followed and Fernandes was rule safe.
That led to some arguments from UVV, who announced it would protest the call.
Afterwards, the protest was withdrawn, as it of course would have had no effect, as it simply was a judgement call that was reversed and not a call against the rules.
And so, Fernandes scored, Dille was credited with a sacrifice fly and Neptunus led 1-0.
After Fernandes had scored, Christian Diaz delivered a runscoring single, then Gianison Boekhoudt followed with a 2-run homerun to make it a 4-0 score.
From here, it was Neptunus all the way, as it rallied for seven more runs in the next inning and scored eleven more thereafter.
While trailing 'only' 4-0, UVV was unable to do something back in the remainder of the game.
The team was not only held scoreless, but also hitless.
UVV registered its lone basehit in the first inning when Tony Enos singled with two outs.
In the bottom of the third inning, UVV got a chance of scoring a run when the Neptunus-defense committed three errors.
Lead-off hitter Rick Kuipers reached second base on a throwing error, but then was picked off second base by catcher Dashenko Ricardo.
With two outs, Tony Enos reached on the next error, then was safe on second base when the third error in the inning was made on a force play-grounder by Omar Williams.
With runners on first and third base, the inning ended when pitcher Orlando Yntema closed with a strikeout.
In the top of the fourth inning, Neptunus put the lead almost out of reach by scoring seven runs on four basehits.
The run-production went very quickly.
Shaldimar Daantji led off with a double and scored on a following single by Daniel Fernandes.
Hereafter, Dwayne Kemp walked and with one out, Christian Diaz delivered a 2-run double.
With two outs, Dashenko Ricardo singled in a run, then the bases got loaded when Rien Vernooij and Steven Wharwood both walked.
With Neptunus leading 8-0 and the bases loaded, starter Jurjen van Zijl was relieved by Thijs Steenwijk.
The three baserunners then scored without a basehit, as Steenwijk walked Shaldimar Daantji, hit Daniel Fernandes with a pitch, then also walked Dwayne Kemp.
And that lifted the lead to 11-0, before a grounder ended the long inning.
Neptunus then rallied for five runs in the fifth and sixth inning.
In the fifth, with one out, Gianison Boekhoudt singled, then Shadrach Meulens entered the game as pinch-hitter for Dashenko Ricardo to make his big league-debut.
The 19-year old Meulens, who is the nephew of Netherlands Kingdom Team-Manager and San Francisco Giants Hitting Coach Hensley Meulens, joined the team a week ago.
He walked in his first at bat and hereafter, Neptunus got the bases loaded when Rien Vernooij also walked.
Steven Wharwood followed with a 2-run, ground-rule double.
A sacrifice fly by Shaldimar Daantji and single by Daniel Fernandes brought in the next two runs and also led to another pitching change.
With runners on second and third base, José Moreno took over, but he saw the next run being scored when Benjamin Dille reached on an error.
In the sixth, after UVV had made several defensive changes, Neptunus added five runs.
Shadrach Meulens led off with his first big league-basehit, then Rien Vernooij also singled.
A runscoring single by Steven Wharwood followed, then Daniel Ferandes added a 2-run single with one out and that was followed by a 2-run homerun by Dwayne Kemp that lifted the lead to 21-0.
Neptunus scored its final run in the seventh on a 2-out triple by Shaldimar Daantji.
After Neptunus had made three errors in the third inning, pitcher Orlando Yntema retired the side in the fourth and fifth inning, including three strikeouts.
One of them was for Jeremy Filipek, UVV's Canadian starting pitcher, who today was used as designated hitter.
In the sixth, Yntema walked Omar Williams with one out, but a double play followed.
Bayron Cornelisse then pitched the seventh inning and retired the side to complete the second consecutive one-hitter.
Last Thursday-evening, three pitchers combined on an one-hitter.
Starting pitcher Diegomar Markwell then threw seven innings.
The lefthander was not with the team today, as on Friday, he and his girlfriend (and former Dutch big league-softball-player and National Team-player) Shulaika Balentina had become the proud parents of son Drake.
