Second win for Southampton and Sant Boi in Spain

SANT BOI DE LLOBREGAT (Spain) - Southampton Mustangs and host Sant Boi recorded their second victory on Tuesday (June 21) on the second day of the Federations Cup Qualifier in Sant Boi de Llobregat in Spain.

Southampton Mustangs (Great Britain) registered its second victory of the tournament, winning 9-4 against Barons Wrocław (Poland), which had started on Monday with a win. Last season, Southampton lost the British championship series of the National Baseball League against London Mets and is now playing in its first-ever European Cup-tournament. London Mets is the participant and host of the other Qualifying Tournament.

In the afternoon, Diving Ducks (Austria) shutout Ishido Botosani (Romania) 7-0 to record its first win of the tournament.

In the evening Sant Boi (Spain) won 7-1 against Therwil Flyers (Switzerland), which was its second win of the event.

Southampton Mustangs vs. Barons Wrocław
Southampton recorded its second victory by winning 9-4 against Wrocław. The English squad led only 5-3 after five innings, but then took more distance in the next at bats.

The Polish took an 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Krsyszto Golebiowski. The English then came alongside immediately in its first at bat on a single by Mexican Oscar Sierra. Both teams left two runners behind in the opening at bat.

Southampton then rallied for four runs in the second inning on a double by Juan Diaz, 2-run single by Arley Lorenzo and double by Jordan Berger.

The Barons narrowed the deficit to 5-3 by scoring twice in the fourth on a single by Wito Gruszkiewicz and an error. Hereafter, the Polish pitching held the Mustangs scoreless in the fourth and fifth. Southampton got the bases loaded in the fifth, but failed to score.

After the Barons had left two runners behind in the top of the sixth, the Mustangs took more distance in the home half of the at bat, scoring three runs. With one out, the bases got loaded when Jordan Berger, Maikel Azcuy-Perez and Oscar Sierra all singled. Playing/coach Josh Chetwynd then delivered a 2-run single and a force play-grounder by Giovanni Escalona accounted for the next run.

Another runscoring single by Chetwynd in the eighth lifted the lead to 9-3. The Barons then scored one more run in the ninth on an error.




Ishido Botosani vs. Diving Ducks
Diving Ducks shutout Botosani 7-0 in the afternoon-game to register its first win of the tournament. For Botosani, this was its second loss.

The Austrians opened the score in the first inning, scoring two runs when the Romanian defense committed three errors. Jan Elteneder led off with a single, stole second base and advanced on a throwing error. Michael Vykoukal then walked and also stole second base. With one out, both runners scored when an error was made on a hit by José Luis Ruiz.

Trailing 2-0, Botosani came close to a run in the second inning. Eduard Pîrvu led off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch then brought him to third base and when he also tried to score, he was eliminated at the plate.

Two more runs were added by the Ducks in the third inning. Matthias Scheicher then led off with a single and scored when José Luis Ruiz homered, which was the first homerun of the tournament.

From the fifth inning on, the Diving Ducks scored a single run in the three consecutive at bats. In the fifth, a run was scored on a wild pitch. In the sixth and seventh, the next two runs were added on errors to increase the lead to 7-0.

Diving Ducks collected only six basehits, but Botosani committed six defensive errors. José Luis Ruiz had three basehits (two doubles, one homerun), scored three runs and batted in two.

Winning pitcher Charles Letourneau went the distance, struckout seven and gave up only three hits in nine innings.

Eduard Pîrvu collected two of the Romanian basehits.




Sant Boi vs. Therwil Flyers
The game remained scoreless in the first three innings, then host Sant Boi faced an 1-0 deficit halfway the fifth inning. The Spanish squad the came alongside, rallied for five runs in the sixth inning and went on to win 7-1.

In the first inning, Miguel Catalan singled for Sant Boi with one out, but then was eliminated on third base trying to advance on a single by Daniel Martinez, who himself stranded on second base.

In the second and third inning, Sant Boi left two runners behind. In the third, the team had runners on first and third base when a flyout ended the at bat.

The Swiss team then took a surprise 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Takanobu Oshima doubled and scored on a following single by Sven Leemann.

The lead was shortlived, as Sant Boi came alongside in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Miguel Catalan walked and scored on a double by Daniel Martinez, but the Spanish team again left two runners behind.

Sant Boi then decided the game by scoring five runs in the sixth inning on only three hits. The team took a 2-1 lead on a single by pinch-hitter Eric Izquierdo. With the bases loaded and after a pitching change, Daniel Martinez and Edison Valerio both received a walk, resulting in the next two runs. A force play-grounder by Jesus Golindano and a steal-situation then lifted the lead to 6-1.

A basesloaded walk for Catalan in the seventh inning led to another run for Sant Boi, which left 13 runners behind in this game.

Enrique Honora Zael went the distance for Sant Boi and struckout 13 batters, walking none and giving up only four basehits.
