At Tempe Diablo Stadium in Tempe, a split-squad of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim played at home against the Oakland Athletics and won 6-5. Another split-squad of the Angels was scheduled to play today in Salt Lake City against its Triple-A team Salt Lake Bees, but that game was cancelled due to snow! The field of Smith's Ballpark was completely covered with inches of snow. Around 9 AM, some of the Angels-players were at the airport in Phoenix for the flight to Salt Lake City in Utah, but didn't have to board their plane, as the game was scrubbed. A few players, including Mike Trout, instead played for the Angels-team in the game against the A's in Tempe.

Andrelton Simmons was not amongst the 55 players that were scheduled to play in Salt Lake City. He was one of the players that was assigned to the team in Tempe and there, he played an important role in the 6-5 victory.

Simmons started the game as short stop for the Angels and was 1-for-2, which was a homerun. He scored once and batted in two runs. It was his first defensive game in a week after having played in some games as a designated hitter.

In the first inning, Simmons lined out. In the third, off of Kendall Graverman, Johnny Giavotella led off with a walk. He advanced on a grounder, but then was eliminated in a run-down which followed a grounder by Rey Navarro. Simmons was the next batter and he then homered to give the Angels a 2-0 lead!

In the bottom of the fifth, with the Angels leading 2-1, Carlos Perez led off with a single, then Navarro also singled. The two were moved both in scoring position thanks to a following sacrifice bunt by Simmons. Hereafter, Daniel Nava and Mike Trout singled to make it 4-1.

Simmons was replaced in the top of the seventh inning. After scoring once in the sixth, the A's added three runs in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. The Angels came alongside in the eighth on a homerun by Geovany Soto, then won in the ninth on a basesloaded, walk-off walk with two outs for Soto.

At George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, the New York Yankees hosted the New York Mets and won 6-3. The Yankees rallied for five runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Didi Gregorius started as short stop for the Yankees and had a big contribution in today's win. He went 2-for-3, scored twice and batted in a run.

In the second inning, off of starter Steven Matz, with out out, Chase Headley singled and Starlin Castro doubled. Hereafter, Gregorius followed with a single to bring in Headley and put the Yankees ahead, 1-0. Brett Gardner added another runscoring single to double the lead. A single by Aaron Hicks then loaded the bases and the rally continued when Alex Rodriguez also delivered a single, bringing in Gregorius and Gardner to lift the lead to 4-0. After a stolen base and a walk, Hicks scored the fifth run on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Beltran.

Gregorius lined out in the third inning, but in the sixth, with one out, the Amsterdam-born short stop doubled, advanced on a grounder, then scored the sixth run for the Yankees on a single by Dustin Fowler. Gregorius was then replaced in the top of the eighth.

At Hammond Stadium @ CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, a split-squad of the Minnesota Twins win 5-1 against the visiting Baltimore Orioles.

Jonathan Schoop started the game as second baseman for the Orioles and he was 0-for-3 today.

Schoop struckout in the second inning against starting pitcher Logan Darnell. He then grounded out in the fourth inning and popped out into foul territory in the seventh inning.

He was then replaced in the bottom of the seventh inning.
